Queensland What is the Urban Indigenous Professional Development (UIPD) Project? The UIPD project extends delivery of the Remote Indigenous Professional Development project (RIPD) to urban areas of Queensland. The project aims to strengthen Indigenous early childhood educators’ effective use of Belonging, Being and Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia (EYLF) in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s learning. The project, funded by the Queensland Government, Department of Education and Training (DET), is being implemented by Indigenous Priorities, Early Childhood Education and Care. A culturally sensitive professional development program Locally tailored professional development programs are to be held across South East Queensland in four priority locations: - Gold Coast - Sunshine Coast - Ipswich - Brisbane. Each program involves: • culturally appropriate professional learning on the Early Years Learning Framework • modelling of best practice in Indigenous early childhood education • working with educators to gather information and plan for children’s learning. Responsive Pedagogical Leaders Each program is facilitated by Indigenous Pedagogical Leaders, carefully chosen for their professional qualifications, cultural connections and knowledge of the EYLF. Participants work collaboratively, using a specially developed kit and practical learning activities, to interpret the EYLF through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. The EYLF book really helps – I can see how what I’m doing is part of the EYLF. Deadly kit! Who should participate? The program gives priority to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators employed in early childhood services. It has been carefully designed to meet the learning needs of ‘entry-level’ educators, for example, assistants working towards their Certificate III. What it will cost to participate? The program is free of charge to eligible participants. This includes: • arrangements for meals, travel and accommodation for each participant • equivalent per hour replacement costs to the employer for local relief staff. Each participant receives a boxed kit of resources developed to support implementation of the EYLF on return to their service. Who should I contact to find out more?
