COMMUNICATION EXCELLENCE PROGRAM
Graduate Division helps graduate students and postdoctoral scholars speak clearly, succinctly, and comfortably
to a variety of audiences inside and outside of the academy.
COURSES
Graduate students must apply to enroll in the course. Academic courses are open to all disciplines.
Science Communication Skills (Phy Sci 220; BioSci 220)
Science communication skills will enable UCI grad students to lead the next century of discovery, impact world policy, architect
a better planet, win multi-million dollar grants for their prize-winning research or simply continue (via that next job, perhaps) to
have the resources to pursue their scientific interests, wherever they might lead.
ACTIVATE TO CAPTIVATE – COMMUNICATION CERTIFICATE SERIES
Activate to Captivate is an 8-week communication certificate program for postdocs and grad students.
Participants will learn and practice strategies to craft a dynamic and compelling presentation including:
• Overcoming anxiety
• Commanding a room
• Effectively communicating with an audience of any size
INTERVIEW SKILLS BOOT CAMP
This three-day boot camp is for grad students and postdocs who want to improve their interview skills.
It provides the tools to enter any interview situation with confidence and excitement including how to:
• Adapt to changing circumstances and handle surprises with confidence
• Practice effective small talk
• Experience the difference between interviewing with an individual, a panel, during a meal and on Skype.
PUBLIC SPEAKING BOOT CAMP
This interactive four-day series teaches basic communication and public speaking techniques in order to transform a
participant’s ability to present persuasively to audiences large and small. The Public Speaking Boot Camp is
offered in the Fall and Spring quarters and is open to postdocs and grad students.
COMMUNICATION CONSULTANT TRAINING CERTIFICATION
This certification program teaches participants how to conduct workshops and offer individual coaching/outreach
to their peers at the GRC. This certification training is offered during the summer and winter quarter and is open to
postdocs and grad students.

DISSERTATION BOOT CAMP
APRIL 24 - APRIL 26
Participate in our next Dissertation Boot Camp (DBC), an intensive 3-day writing
opportunity for graduate students in the writing stage of their dissertation. The DBC helps
writers overcome blocks, make significant progress in a short period of time, and develop
skills for future academic writing.
Dissertation Boot Camp provides:
• Three days of structured writing time in a
quiet, distraction free setting
• Short, daily lessons on dissertation
writing and goal setting
• Individualized consultation opportunities
to address specific writing needs
• Opportunities for continued, peer-driven
dissertation writing sessions
