A Beginner’s Guide To Using PayPal
Important information
ACWW has now set up an online payment system through PayPal, that members can use to pay for
Individual memberships (new and renewals) and Society memberships (renewals only).
Why use PayPal?
PayPal is a payment service that allows individuals and organisations to interact in real time. The idea behind
PayPal is simple; people can make financial transactions electronically online.
What’s great is that PayPal keeps your financial information private. One of the benefits of this privacy is
that when a buyer (you) uses PayPal, the seller (ACWW) never sees their credit card or bank account
details. So if you do not know how to use PayPal, my guide should help you get started. It won’t go through
everything PayPal does, but it should help you get set up and ready to go.

Getting Started
•To register for a PayPal account, open up your web browser and type www.paypal.com into the
address bar. Once on the site you will notice that PayPal’s home page has multiple links that allow you to
sign up for an account. You can find one ‘Sign Up’ link in the upper-right corner of the screen, and the other
can be found in the middle of the screen. There are mainly two different types of PayPal accounts you can
choose from, depending on your needs, business or personal. A Business account is the right choice if you’re
selling as a business and a Personal account is the right choice if you’re a buyer. In this guide we are going to
choose a Personal account.
How to register for a PayPal account
• Once you are on PayPal’s website click on either of the sign up buttons. You’ll need to choose your
account type here - you want to select ‘Personal’ account. Click the ‘Continue’ button to begin. On PayPal’s
‘Create a personal account’ page, make sure the Personal account option was selected, if it wasn’t in
error you might be signing up for a business account. If however you want this type of account, PayPal has
instructions on what you would need to do to make this happen.
•Enter an email address and then create a password. Your password must have at least eight characters.
Pay attention when creating your password especially if you’ve used upper and lowercase characters, as
all PayPal passwords are case-sensitive. For example PayPal won’t accept ‘mypassword123’ as valid, if you
created ‘MYPassWORD123’.
•Next you will be taken to a page where you need to enter all your personal details. On this page read
the user agreement and privacy policy and if you agree check the box, then click “Agree and Create My
Account” at the bottom of the page. From there you should be taken to a page where you can enter
your bank account or credit card information to send and receive money. You will be presented with two
options, either to enter your bank account details or to enter your credit card details. From whichever
option you choose, fill out all fields as required. You also have the option to enter your bank account details
later. If you choose this option, just click on ‘Go to My Account’ to exit, this will take you directly to your
PayPal account, which will be an ‘Unverified’ account.
Right...nearly at the finish line!
To make purchases you will need to have a verified PayPal account, this can be achieved by either choosing

to enter your bank details during the first stage of registration or from your profile, by simply clicking
the ‘Get Verified’ button and entering your bank account details. By entering your account details you are
agreeing to set up a Direct Debit agreement with PayPal and confirming that you are the owner of the bank
account you have entered.
What happens next after entering my bank account... am I now verified?
•At this stage you are not yet verified. After you have entered your bank details, confirmed your email
address and set up a Direct Debit, PayPal will deposit two small amounts into your bank account. After
roughly 2-4 business working days you should receive an email from PayPal saying that the money has been
transferred and that you should check the amounts with your bank, before confirming the amounts in your
PayPal account.
•After the small amounts have appeared in your bank account, log back into your PayPal account and click
the ‘Confirm bank account’ link, then enter the two amounts.
• Once these amounts have been confirmed your PayPal account is now verified and you can start adding
funds to your PayPal account.
If you have not received an email from PayPal in at least 14 working days after confirming your bank details, contact
PayPal after checking with your bank.
OK... last steps!
How do I add funds once my PayPal account has been verified?
1.Go to www.paypal.com and log into your PayPal account.
2.Click Add money for your bank account and choose a currency.
3.Select a bank account (if you have more than one) and follow the instructions on the screen.
4.Review the transfer details, before clicking the Submit button.
Whichever way you’ve transferred your funds from your bank account, PayPal will tell you how long it will
take and when your funds will be available for you to use.
Congratulations... you have now opened your first PayPal account!
