Dressing up for the event is encouraged. The club is averaging one event per month. April event planning is underway. John advised the club calendar is updated with no conflicts at this time. In order to ensure dignitaries and other special guests have sufficient time to confirm their attendance at the club, the board members agreed to make the June 6 date firm for this year’s DYC sail past event. Fleet Captain: Brutus renovations are well underway in Lloyd’s garage. Big and small whalers are at Marlon. They have been winterized but not covered and need a power wash. Easter Seals planning is now underway. It has been decided that no auction will be held this year. Bill advised that the main sponsors are onboard for the event. Rock the Docks will happen again this year. The theme is being planned. Food and Beverage: Rosco reported the restaurant had great month. Additional discussion was held on selecting the date for the spring DYC Members General Information meeting. Commodore Jim will report back to the board next meeting. New Business Simon raised the issue of extra help in the office during the spring. A suggestion was made to possibly utilize a Niagara College Co-op from the office admin courses during spring months to assist in the DYC office. Board members had a discussion regarding the club’s past experience with the Officer of the Day concept as it relates to the current system of paid dock staff handling visitor check in and other questions from the public. It was agreed the current dock staff system works and serves the club well. It was suggested that a volunteer Welcoming Ambassador concept might complement the good work being done by the dock staff. More discussion will be held on this concept. Learn to Sail: Waiting for feedback from Ontario Sailing Association on participation in some of our planned events. Motion to adjourn by Joyce, seconded by Tom. Meeting Adjourned at 11:20a.m. Peter Nadorozny Bob and his wife live in St. Catharines. One winter morning, while listening to the radio, they hear the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street, so the snow plow can get through." Bob's wife goes out and moves her car. A week later while they are eating breakfast, the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street, so the snow plow can get through." Bob's wife goes out and moves her car again. The next week they are having breakfast again, when the radio announcer says "We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park ..." then the hydro goes out. Bob's wife is very upset, and with a worried look on her face she says, "Honey, I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snow plow can get through?” With the love and understanding in his voice like all men who are married to blondes exhibit, Bob says, "Why don't you just leave it in the garage this time?" Vision Statement: The Dalhousie Yacht Club is a friendly, safe and affordable boating community dedicated to learning, respect for all, and enjoyment in all aspects of the sport of boating. 3 DYC BREEZE March 2015 Entertainment News ... March 14th – St. Paddy’s pub specials Fri. April 3rd – Good Friday Fish Fry Sun. April 5th – Easter Brunch Sat. April 25th – unveiling of “Brutus” celebration If you have an idea, please contact me to discuss ([email protected] or 905-937-6145). I’d love to hear it and see what we can do about bringing it to DYC. Joyce Hildebrandt From the Editor’s Desk ... Will this winter ever end? I don’t remember a winter where I shoveled more than I have this year! The piles of snow on the sides of the road remind me of those from my childhood — as tall as we were. We would climb onto them, carve saddles and “ride” our snow horses for hours. But I am reminded that spring is on its way and I will soon be able to put the snowsuit away and once again wear flip flops. Bring on the warm weather!!! We hope to see you all at the Sock Hop on March 7. Dig out your Poodle Skirts and Saddle Shoes and get ready to boogie the night away to the music of The Athertones. I ran across an interesting article regarding Lightning Strikes and boats at risk. You can read this article at http://www.boatus.com/seaworthy/magazine/2015/january/lightning-facts.asp If you have any stories or photos to share with club members, please email them to be by the 25th of the month. We all love to see what you have been up to this winter. (Enquiring minds want to know!) The countdown is really getting down there ... only 61 days till launch, 48 to docks-in and 20 till spring. Activity will soon be seen around the yards if the snow ever disappears. Roll on spring thaw. Looking forward to seeing you around there. CRUISING :- We have a good cruising schedule this season which includes a couple of extended cruises along the North shore. The Sign-up sheets are posted on the club notice board — come to any or come to all. Sign up early and avoid disappointment as some of the clubs have limited space. I won't know exactly how many boats the host clubs can accommodate until the time gets closer. I am sure we will all get in; we always do. Looks like lots of cruisers on the lake this year. Remember "Safety First." Be alert in the shipping lanes; forget the "Power gives way to Sail" rule and use the more logical and unwritten rule, "Fibreglass gives way to Steel." We can manoeuvre quickly; a 30,000 ton freighter can't. Passed away suddenly at home on December 27th, 2014 in his 74th year. Captain Richard Bartley, beloved husband of Brenda, in their 47th year of marriage, dear father of Stephen and Kara and dear brother of Anna Maksenuk (Phil), predeceased by his parents, Bianca and Abbondio, all of Niagara Falls. Richard was a pilot for 35 years, first with the Royal Canadian Air Force as an instructor pilot then as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force, finishing his career as a commercial airline pilot. Richard was also an enthusiastic member of the Port Dalhousie Yacht Club and he never lost his love of flying. At Richard's request, cremation has taken place. Donations to the humane society would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to NIAGARA FUNERAL . Sailing Clubs – Advice Requested I am wondering if you could help me. I have a wooden firefly dinghy at my cottage that my father purchased years ago. He has passed on, but I would like to refurbish it and preserve it as a classic boat rather than leave it untended in my garage. Is there someone at your club who might have interest and experience with this sailboat whom I could contact for advice on how to proceed? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me.
