U of A Faculty of Engineering DiscoverE Engineering & Science Camps Job Title: Instructor Term: Temporary Full Time paid position Start Date: April 28th, 2015 End Date: August 30th, 2015 Location: ETLC Job Description DiscoverE is a not-for-profit, student-delivered initiative of the Faculty of Engineering with the goal of fostering interest in engineering, science, and technology in youth. We deliver in-class science workshops during the months of May and June, and offer science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) day camps during July and August. We are looking to hire energetic, enthusiastic, creative undergraduate students who are passionate to inspire and empower youth in STEM. We accept any academic background with preference for students in engineering, science, computer science, math, and education. The instructors prepare for and deliver workshops and camps. They are directly responsible for the positive experience of each participant. Job Duties Prepare materials for workshop and camp projects, pack these materials into bins and create supply lists for material purchasing Deliver workshops (teach scientific concepts and run hands-on projects) with enthusiasm, professionalism, and efficiency to classrooms all over Alberta and the NWT with a fellow team leader or instructor. Deliver camps on campus and in satellite locations across Alberta and the NWT o Teach scientific concepts o Proactively manage classroom situations o Keep facilities clean Follow safety and risk management procedures and ensure every participant is safe and having fun Travel to satellite locations all over Alberta and the NWT Communicate with parents, participants, media, coworkers, supervisors, teachers, and other stakeholders Collect feedback from teachers, participants, and parents Job Qualifications Experience working and/or desire to work with children Superior public speaking/communications skills Excited and enthusiastic about science, engineering, math, and technology Strong conceptual background in science Positive role model Excellent conflict resolution and problem solving skills High energy personality Ability to work as part of a team Competency with computers Mature interpersonal conduct Willingness to learn new material Willingness to travel and commit volunteer (unpaid work) hours Enrolled in an undergraduate program at the U of A for 2014-2015, preferably with some background in engineering, science, computer science, math, or education.
