On behalf of your city government, I hope that 2015 has so far been a year of health and joy for you and your family. I’d like to share with you a few of the priorities your City Council and City staff are working on this year. SMART - As you know, San Rafael will soon be home to two new train stations and a brand new travel option. Many people in our community endure grueling commutes and we are very excited about this new asset in our City. Preparing for this new change is a complex task. The City Council has formed a Subcommittee dedicated to overseeing SMART-related projects and issues in our community. One such issue last year resulted in the City Council directing staff to take steps to establish a “Quiet Zone” in San Rafael that will minimize the sounds of train horns. We are also engaged in efforts to manage traffic and improve connectivity to the train stations for bikes, pedestrians, transit, and cars. For more about the work we are doing, visit www.cityofsanrafael.org/smart. Safer Public Safety Facilities - In 2013, San Rafael voters approved Measure E which extended our local sales tax rate and added 0.25%. This additional funding is being set aside so that we can begin addressing our aging essential facilities, such as ensuring that our fire stations and emergency dispatch center are seismically safe. We are now immersed in planning - understanding our needs, analyzing sites, and preparing for financing. The City Council has formed a Facilities Subcommittee and assembled a Working Group that includes community members and City employees. To learn more about this project, visit www.cityofsanrafael.org/facilities. Join us Downtown - Several new and exciting businesses have joined our Downtown institutions, making Downtown San Rafael the vibrant place that it is. We’ve recently welcomed several new restaurants, including Green Chile Kitchen, Uchiwa Ramen, Naan ‘n Curry, and 4 Register Now! Shwe Myanmar. The City Council’s Economic Development Subcommittee is looking at options to further enhance Downtown. Catch a show at Fenix Supper Club or a film at the Rafael. This summer Downtown will be home to a plethora of family friendly events including the Thursday Evening Farmers’ Market, May Madness Car Show and Parade, Italian Street Painting, the Great American Blues & BBQ, and Twilight Criterium Bike Race. For full event listings, visit www.cityofsanrafael.org/events. Envisioning a New Library - In March, the Library held a visioning workshop with the community to begin planning for a new library that meets the needs of our diverse community. Our Downtown Library was built in 1908 and can no longer add a book without removing one from circulation. This is a big step in an ambitious process led by the San Rafael Public Library Foundation and working with the City Council Library Subcommittee to build a modern library system. Visit www.srplfoundation.org to learn more. Engagement - This involves you! In January, the City Council adopted an action plan that sets forth a variety of new ways to improve engagement and transparency, create a healthy dialogue, utilize technology, and embrace the viewpoints of everyone in the community. As a member of this community, we value your thoughts, contributions and aspirations. There are many ways to become involved – serve on a board or commission, volunteer, or simply just tell us what you think about things. For more on this, visit www.cityofsanrafael.org/engage. There are many more exciting things happening in San Rafael; too many to list here. For more frequent updates from me, subscribe to my bimonthly e-newsletter at www.cityofsanrafael.org/snapshot. This course uses a three meeting process to educate couples about redefining money in terms of 'we' vs. 'I'. That is, identifying common concerns and common goals to work toward. Evaluating the family balance sheet - year to year changes in net worth - and liquidity ratios - creditworthiness. Planning budgets that keep couples on track. Attaining more ease in their mutual conversations about money, as well as saving and investing. The class will integrate behavioral psychology into new paths for success. The class will also review financial planning necessary and provide worksheets and models for retirement and estate planning. Call 485-3333 Aquatic Safety, Importance of Swim Lessons and Water Safety By Vera De Ferrari, Program Coordinator Drowning is the second leading cause of death in children 1-14 in the United States. In 2014 from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 174 deaths occurred that involved children younger than 15 years of age in swimming pools and spas throughout the United States. It is estimated that for each drowning death that 1 to 4 children suffer from a serious, but nonfatal submersion incident. What can you do to help reduce the incidence of water related emergencies? Teach Children to “Never go in or around water unless they are with an adult!” Provide constant supervision, never leave children unattended in a water area from the bath tub to a bucket to the swimming pool – always be vigilant. Ensure that children are wearing the proper Coast Guard Approved Floatation devices, life vests. Never rely 100% on a floatation device - remember nothing compares to a parent or guardian’s full attention. Terra Linda Pool Your next exercise challenge is here – Aqua Body Sculpt™! Strengthen your core muscles with a unique focus on the abdominal region as you progress through choreographed routines, stimulating key aspects of fitness from joint flexibility and posture alignment to cardio endurance and renewed exercise motivation, all in a zero- to low-impact pool environment. Designed for both the conditioned student and water newbie. A personal float belt is recommended. Instructor Tina Parrish inspires her water aerobic students on a regular basis at the Mill Valley Rec Center and Osher Marin JCC where she was recently honored for her 10 years of service. Costs $12 drop in. Air-filled or Foam Toys, water wings, noodles or inner tubes are toys – as such they are not designed to support swimmers and keep them safe. Enroll preschool aged children in swim lessons, but remember that does not make them 100% drown proof. Some would say, “Swimming is just like riding a bike; once you learn, you’ll never forget!” Swimming is a lifelong skill enhancing a child’s ability to be in, on or around water, as well as providing them with the years of healthful exercise and the opportunity for comradery in myriad aquatic settings. Here at the Terra Linda Community Pool, we offer swim lessons to get your child off on the right stroke. Every season we provide over 300 group lessons and offer private lessons built around your schedule. When your child enters our program (Levels 1, 2, and 3), we create a fun, more intimate setting with a 1:3 teacher to student ratio. In these lower levels, we work on everything from water acclimatization with an instructor to the basics of floating, breath control, kicking, and making our way toward arm circles. Once your child’s skills and confidence begin to grow, we combine their basic skills with more distance and less physical support from their instructor. Above all else we work to make sure your child is safe, having fun, and learning how to navigate the water. Children who learn to swim benefit from increased self-esteem, confidence, strength, stamina and health! http://eplay.livelifelocally.com 35 Terra Linda Pool Early Spring Schedule April 6 - May 31 Sunday/ Holiday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Lap Swim Lap Swim Lap Swim 6am-9:45am Lap Swim 6am-9:45am Lap Swim 8-11:30am Masters 6-7am 6am-9:45am Masters 6-7am 6am-9:45am Aqua Body Sculpt™ 10-11am Begins May 4 Begins May 5 WaterGym® 10-11am Friday Closed for regular maintenance until 11am Saturday Lap Swim 8-11:30am WaterGym® Tot Pool 10-11am 8-6pm Lap Swim Lap Swim Lap Swim Lap Swim Public Swim Closed 11-2pm 11-2pm 11-2pm 11-2pm 11-6pm Tot Pool Tot Pool Tot Pool Tot Pool Aqua Dash* Open 4/16/15 11-6pm 11-6pm 11-6pm 11-6pm 12-5pm 11-1:30pm Lap Public Swim Public Swim Public Swim Public Swim 1-6pm 4/18 Pool Tot/Public Swim 1-6pm 1-6pm 1-6pm 1-6pm Opens 12pm 5:15-8:45pm 5/30 Pool Orcas Orcas Orcas Orcas Orcas Opens 2pm** 5:15-8:45pm 5:15-8:45pm 5:15-8:45pm 5:15-8:45pm *Aqua Dash weather dependent - call or check Facebook for hours.
