A Medley of Pediatric Topics
This program is designed for pediatricians, family
practitioners, emergency room and other physicians and
allied health professionals who care for children. It is
intended to familiarize healthcare providers with many
common or potentially life-threatening conditions that
may occur in infants and older children seen in the office,
emergency room or inpatient hospital setting. Upon
completion of the program, participants will be better
able to:
• Discuss the current AAP/AHA/ACC recommendations
for pre-participation screening for young athletes;
explain how the guidelines were formulated; describe
how to use the 14 point tool; and describe the weakness
of the tool and what to do if concerned.
• Identify prevalence, methods, and causes of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI); explain key differences
between NSSI and suicide and key characteristics of
NSSI behavior that may increase the risk for future
suicide attempt; discuss best ways for a PCP to assess
NSSI patients and motivate them to change; and
discuss common treatment approaches to NSSI, and the
PCP’s role in making a referral to behavioral healthcare
providers, and following up with the patient over time. • Recognize the essential role of a pediatric provider in
suicide prevention and intervention; discuss national
and state statistics on suicidal behaviors among
children and adolescents and reasons for high suicide
rates; describe key risk factors, intrapersonal, social/
situational and protective factors as well as the barriers
that contribute to suicidal behavior; describe how to
question, persuade and refer youth to appropriate
resources; and explain how safety and crisis support
plans are developed for youth and parents.
• Discuss FDA Black Box Warning and its impact on
prescribing of antidepressants in the pediatric and
young adult population; explain how to manage patient
concerns regarding use of antidepressants and fear
of increasing suicidal ideation; describe monitoring
