Dear Candidate,
If you are reading these words, we may safely assume that you are looking for information on
continuing your study abroad and more specifically: on studying in a master programme at the
School of Arts | University College Ghent. Look no further: you have come to the right place.
The School of Arts is able to welcome a growing number of new (“external”) master students
every year. Apart from an increasing number of Belgian master students coming in from other
schools in the country, all in all 60 to 70 new foreign candidates complete the application
procedure and join our master programmes every year.
Our application procedure is not complex, but it can take some time to complete. In these
application guidelines we explain in a clear and simple way how to go about when you apply for
one of our programmes. We will tell you what the deadlines are, what documents you need to
provide us with at what time and in which capacity, who you can contact for information, where
you can find detailed info on living in Ghent, etc.
The final goal of our guidelines is to make sure that, at the time you enroll as a student here at the
school, all of your application formalities have been taken care of and you do not need to worry
about that part of your master adventure anymore.
The guidelines contain a significant amount of important information meant to smoothly guide
you through the application process. We therefore advise you to thoroughly read all the info in
this document before continuing your application. For reactions, feedback or additional questions,
you may at all times contact [email protected].
This information brochure is accompanied by a questionnaire that needs to be filled out. Please
do not forget to do this (!). The questionnaire will be sent to you per automatic reply mail after
you completely and correctly filled out the preregistration.

1. It is of capital importance that candidates respect the deadlines mentioned in the
guidelines
2. We advise candidates who will need to take care of time consuming administrative
formalities (visa, document authentication …) to participate in the Spring Selection
round, rather than in the Summer Selection round.
3. Candidates who disregard the deadlines mentioned in the guidelines, will still be
processed, but only when time allows and without any guarantee of a successful and
complete application guidelines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER A MASTER PROGRAMME
Before you read on, you’ll most likely want to know about the minimum requirements you need
to meet if you wish to be considered a valid candidate for the programme of your choice.
The minimum requirement to start in one of our master programmes is that you have
obtained an equivalent diploma to the Belgian academic bachelor degree in the art of
playing a musical instrument (for a master in performing music) or music production,
composition, music theory (for a master in creating music) at the time you enroll for the
master. In order to enter the advanced master programmes, you will need to have a master
degree in instrument practice or performance.
This means that you can also apply at a time that you did not receive your bachelor or master
degree yet ( but will receive it at the end of your current academic year 2014-2015). If you can
provide us with a document that states when you expect to obtain your diploma, you are very
welcome to apply as well. The final step in the application procedure, however, is receiving the
approval on your application and this approval is only issued when you have submitted a correctly
authenticated final or provisional bachelor/master diploma copy.
All candidate files are first verified individually here at the School of Arts. We assess whether
you have the equivalent to an academic bachelor and whether your diploma can be considered as
a diploma in musical practice or performance (for the master in performing music) or meets the
relevant criteria for the master in creating music (production, composition, theory …) .
Equivalence: In some cases, foreign bachelor diplomas are not equivalent to our
Belgian academic bachelors, but to our professional bachelors. If this is the case, you
can still start in the master if you follow a bridging programme first (cfr. page 9). Your
diploma transcripts and supplements are important sources of information to us in
determining whether you have the equivalent to a professional or academic bachelor 1.
A bridging programme is designed to “academise” your professional diploma and is
composed of a necessary number of subjects from the various years in our bachelor
programmes. Depending on each individual file and on the outcome of the application
interview or audition, this programme can sometimes be combined with a part of the
master programme already.
In musical practice or performance: In most cases, it is quite simple to
determine whether your diploma is a diploma obtained in instrument practice or
performance or not. For example: If you studied to be a bachelor of music in
violoncello, there is no doubt that your diploma means that you trained to play the
violoncello. If you studied to be a bachelor in musicology , it is rather obvious that the
focus of your diploma was not on learning how to play an instrument or how to perform
with an instrument.
Some cases, however, may not be so obvious. Therefore, if you have a degree or

education closely linked to various academic processes that we find in our bachelor or
master degrees, you could still have an interesting artistic viewpoint on things and that
you could formulate a very interesting master proposal . Your portfolio, master
proposal, diploma transcripts and diploma supplements will be crucial pieces of
information to us to determine where you stand and whether you can be invited for an
interview or allowed an entry into our master/advanced master programmes.
If you apply for composition, music theory, instrument building or music production,
we will of course not require that you have a degree in instrument practice of
performance.

MASTER PROPOSAL & PORTFOLIO: TWO IMPORTANT FEATURES.
You are about to apply for one of our (advanced) master programmes. That means we will need
you to send us a number of documents (personal info, a master proposal, diploma copies, … ).
Here is a word of explanation on two important features of any application.
THE MASTER PROPOSAL (for candidates in all music programmes)
One of the crucial documents and centre-pieces of your application is the master proposal.
It’s importance may not be underestimated, because – together with the portfolio – it will be one
of the bases in the decision to invite you to the interview/audition of the Spring or Summer
selection rounds. It is also a key document in finding a mentor for your master projects and thesis
later on in your study. Every application file, must therefore contain a master proposal.
The proposal is a document in which the candidate will describe the starting point and more or
less concrete outlines of the artistic research the student wishes to carry out in his or her master
projects and he/she will need to motivate this from his/her personal history as an artist or art
student. The document needs to be between 1500 and 2000 words and needs to contain the
following elements:
Part 1:
A Working Title + a personal statement why you are a suitable candidate for the course. What
you hope to achieve during your studies at the School of Arts and how this relates to your career
aspirations. Give details of your subject interests, relevant experiences and abilities in arts.
Part 2:
Discuss the research question(s) you would like to elaborate on in your artistic master project,
which interests, ideas and media you wish to explore through the master programme and how your
master project would help to attain your long-term goals. Mention artistic and/or theoretical
references. Illustrate how you would start up this master project, on a practical and technical level
as well as on the level of contents. Define a possible theme for your master thesis and explain how
this thesis could support you in your artistic process.
The master proposal describes in general terms what you hope to achieve by means of artistic
research and will often already form the (general) basis of the student’s master projects and thesis.
(This does not mean, however, that your master proposal pins you down to an unchangeable
viewpoint or basis for your master study, since any artistic process is and should be open to change
and evolution).
Part 3:
Add any relevant info that can support your motivation and research project.
The master proposal is a central part of your application and will also be a central part of the
interview or audition with the Orientation Committee. It is based on the principle that we, as a
school of arts, wish to start from the viewpoint of the student. From the start, the proposal will
also lay the foundation for the ideal approach and guidance of the student and his/her idea(s).

THE PORTFOLIO (only for candidates in music production, composition and instrument
building)
You apply for our one of our master programmes, because you are or will soon be a bachelor in
music creation (composition or production). Your diploma and curriculum, however, serve only
administrative purposes and are quite limited when one needs to form an impression of the artist
behind the degree. An artist’s body of work speaks more clearly and gives us a much better idea
of his/her artistic level, what he/she is about or has to offer and on whether the candidate may be
a valuable and interesting artist who is able to function in our master or advanced master
programme(s). That is why wer equire candidates to provide us with a portfolio.
Candidates will need to provide a portfolio beforehand (to be submitted with other application
documents. We accept links to websites, Tumblr, Youtube or Vimeo links, Wetransfer,
Soundcloud, Bandcamp, … . We do not accept portolios on dvd’s, cd’s, usb … or any other
portable format. The goal is to be able to swiftly forward your portfolio per e-mail to all necessary
committee members, together with your master proposal.
The artistic portfolio is a presentation of the artistic evolution during the previous studies or in
the past 5 years. It can contain audio files of artistic work (eg. recordings, compositions and songs,
arrangements, …) as well as documentation on artistic work. The candidate should restrict
him/herself to relevant work (artistic work that is relevant to the candidates’ artistic process,
his/her artistic goals and master proposal).

USEFUL INFORMATION ON …
THE BRIDGING PROGRAMME
In Flanders, the majority of art schools provide academic training. The research skills aimed for are artistic,
as well as theoretical and reflective. Immediate admission to the master programmes at the Royal
Conservatory Ghent is only available to those who hold an academic bachelor degree in an instrument
discipline (for performing music), music production, music composition or an equivalent diploma (for
creating music).
If you wish to apply for one of our master programs, we will verify whether your bachelor diploma can be
considered equivalent to an academic bachelor degree. Criteria used to establish the level of your diploma
are (amongst others): precedents, the duration of your study, the balance between theoretical/practical
subjects, the fact that your diploma grants access to a university study in your country, the contents of the
subjects in your bachelor program, ….
If we are unable to recognize your bachelor degree in art as the equivalent to an academic bachelor degree,
but can establish that your degree is equal to our professional bachelor degree you can still apply, but you
will be required to follow the bridging programme before you can start the master programme. The bridging
programme is meant to ‘academise’ your level. Mostly this means catching up on a number of academic
courses and skills that support the reflective and academic nature of the art discipline you wish to continue
your studies in.
In composing the curriculum of the bridging programmes, both the curriculum manager and the master
coordinator (mostly also the chairman/woman of the orientation committee) are consulted. The master
coordinator and the members of the orientation committee will decide on whether practical subjects should
be added to the curriculum and the curriculum manager decides on the theoretical subjects that need to be
part of your bridging programme curriculum. The number of credits in a bridging programme may range
from 45 ECTS to 90 ECTS (60 ECTS is considered as a full time year of studying in Flanders).
Important: candidates should realize that the bridging program is composed of subjects from our bachelor
programmes. The bridging programmes are therefore taught in Dutch. We do make an effort to work around
this for non-Dutch speaking students until the time that the School of Arts can officially organize English
theory classes for non-Dutch speaking bridging programme students.

STUDY ABROAD: DESTINATION GHENT (useful information brochure)
Foreign students who come to study in Ghent will need to take care of a visa (when they come from outside the
European Union or European Economic Union) and make sure they are registered in the Belgian Foreigners Register
(all foreign students, apart from students with a legal residence in France, Germany and Holland). For those who plan
to live in Ghent there is a very interesting brochure online that explains everything from before your arrival until you
leave Belgium again. This brochure also gives information on housing facilities, health care, cost of living in Ghent,
etc., etc., …

PRICES
Tuition fees may vary slightly from year to year. The School of Arts does not use different prices for foreign students.
Belgian students may apply for a student grant from the Belgian government. Foreign students cannot apply for any
grants through the Belgian government. If your country has a bilateral agreement with Belgium, then a grant under
this agreement is a possibility, but it needs to be requested in your country of origin through the competent authorities.
Students who have difficulties with the payment of the fees, can contact our social services department Dienst
Studentenvoorzieningen and look into the possibilities of a payment plan with them. ([email protected] - ++ 32 (0)9 243

The tuition fee comes to approximately 890 €/year for a full-time programme in the bachelor and master programmes.
The advanced master programme will cost you 1.500€/year if you enroll as a full-time student (60 ECTS credits).
Additionally, there is a studio fee to be paid on an yearly basis as well. This fee may vary between 125 € and 400 € per
year, depending on the discipline you apply for. The exact fees will be announced on the University College website
(www.hogent.be).
The general cost of living in Belgium: Officially, one needs to take into account in a provision of 614 € / month.
However, this figure is not very much in accordance with reality. A student who lives cheap (!), should be able to get
by on 1.000 € / month (all depending on your personal life style and the cost of your house/apartment/studio ….). This
figure is merely indicative, of course. Please try to get as much info as you can before you arrive in Belgium.

As mentioned – normally - foreign students cannot receive funds from the Belgian government for their studies in

Naturally, when you come to Belgium, you will need a place to stay. If you intend to live in Ghent, you can contact the
University College’s social services department (Dienst Studentenvoorzieningen) and check whether they can assist in

Alternatively, the site http://www.kotatgent.be is an excellent database for students who are trying to find a place to
live (this site focuses on Ghent – For the rest of Belgium http://www.immoweb.be is a good starting point for the private
market).
CONSLive!
Conservatory Live is our annual preparation day to the artistic entrance exams. This day is aimed at bachelor candidates
in performing music, but master applicants for the Spring Application round are more than welcome as well. This year
CONSLive! is organized on Sunday, April 26th, 2015 from 10h00 until 16h00. On this day, you can obtain all the
necessary information on the degree programme of your choice and you can check whether you meet the standards and
have the required artistic level to start in one of our programmes. Teachers will guide you through this day. You will
have the opportunity to play for a teacher of your choice and you’ll receive feedback on your performance. We’ll also
show you examples of the theoretical parts of the entrance examinations.

Just like last year, CONSLive! is organized on the same day as our Open House Day. This offers a splendid chance for
all interested souls to come and have a closer look at our school and it’s campuses.

THE ADVANCED MASTER PROGRAM
The advanced master program focuses on excellent musicians who wish to combine a
specialization within classical music with the development of a performing career. The program
wants to train a limited group of students at the highest artistic and professional level in
contemporary classical music culture. Students in the advanced master already have the master
diploma. In an authentic learning and study environment, the musician will be able to work on
his soloist skills as well as in ensemble. The program motivates it’s students to gain as much live
and concert experience as possible in an environment that is both professional and in touch with
reality.
Research and innovation
The aim is to conduct research on contemporary classical music and the latest
performance practices by means and in the frame of a personal concert practice,
supervised and accompanied by specialists in the field. In an international context,
students, mentors and teachers look for innovating music and innovative methods of
performing. To question conventions is a pivotal point in the program. Every new
performance should define itself again. Students in the advanced master program
therefore never profile themselves as mere performing musicians, but also as creating
musicians.
Individual training
The advanced master program is based on the specific artistic project as defined by the
student. This master proposal is at the core of the artistic entrance test that precedes
admission to the program. At the beginning of the academic year, the program’s
coordinator and student will critically examine and fine-tune the master proposal. This
personal document will become the blueprint on which the further development of the
individual study path is based. The advanced master students know how to appreciate this
freedom and understand how to avail themselves of this opportunity to develop
themselves as artists.
Two modules
With two different areas of focus within the advanced master program,
candidates/students either opt for the module Contemporary Music [Module A] or the
module Contemporary Performance Practice [Module B].
Contemporary Music – Module A – Interpretation and performance practice
after 1950
Students opting for this module, work on classical music from the 20th and 21st
century in different ensembles. They specialize in studying and performing work
from this period. At the same time, they have an active role in developing and
creating new work from both young and established composers. They do this
under the guidance and in cooperation with musicians from the contemporary
music ensembles Ictus & SPECTRA. With these coaches, the students will
develop a personal artistic project. Through workshops and lectures, the students
will be in contact with international experts in the field of contemporary music.
Equally important is the cooperation and exchange of ideas with their peers:

composers, choreographers, theatre makers or visual artists. Under the banner of
GAME (Ghent Advanced Master Ensemble), students will perform concerts
inside and outside the school and personal projects can be given a place on stage
as well. The program is concluded with a concert and a thesis that results from
the research into the student’s artistic practice.
Contemporary Performance Practice – Module B – Interpretation and
Performance Practice : 18th and 19th century music.
Students who opt for Module B will specialize in the most recent interpretations
of music from the Renaissance to the Romantic era and will do this according to
insights from the historically informed performance practice. From the broad
repertoire of Western classical music the student will choose an area that he/she
wants to research during his/her 2 year program: composer, genre, theme, period
of a combination of these. This choice is to be a clearly marked, yet fertile area
of research. The master proposal defines the artistic path the student wants to
follow. He/she will specialize in new performance methods based on historical,
musicological and personal artistic research. A team of teachers specializeing in
historically informed performance practice and a number of renowned speakers
will teach the theoretical and practical finesses in style, technique and ensemble
practice. Interplay is a crucial aspect in the program and students will therefore
perform in and outside the school. Formations will have the opportunity to present
themselves to a broader audience. Module B of the advanced master is accessible
to instrumentalists that play historical instruments and to singers.

OVERVIEW OF THE APPLICATION PROCEDURES
The Spring Application Round and Summer Application Round are for the most part similar
procedures, but the differences between them are quite crucial. Please read and follow the steps
of the procedure of your choice thoroughly.
THE SPRING APPLICATION PROCEDURE (Text)
Application Deadline: March 27th, 2015 – 16h00 sharp (Brussels’ Time Zone)
Orientation Committee interview: April 27th, 2015
Application files submitted after the deadline, will only be processed when time allows and
without guarantee of successful continuation of the application procedure.
1. Pre-register online
If you wish to apply, this is the first step in the procedure. Surf to
https://webreg.hogent.be (possibility to do this in English and Dutch. (cfr. the right
hand side of the screen) and fill out all necessary information. Upon completion of
this pre-registration, you will be sent an automatic e-mail that contains further
documentation that needs to be filled out. This automatic e-mail will only reach you
when all required fields in the pre-registration have been correctly completed.
2. Complete the questionnaire and add required documents
Please complete the questionnaire that you received after completing your preregistration and provide all the necessary documents. A list of all documents that we
will need you to submit is mentioned on page 25).
At this point you may choose how you provide us with your documents: either as one
single pdf-file per e-mail or in paper form per postal mail (scores for your audition
per pdf only). Please make sure the documents reach us before the deadline expires.

3. Verification of your application file | Invitation
Upon reception of your application documents, we will verify a) whether your
application file is complete b) whether you have the right diploma for a future
admission into one of our master programs and c) whether your diploma is the

equivalent to our Belgian academic or professional bachelor diplomas in the arts.
If your file is complete and you have a diploma that allows the continuation of the
procedure, we will confirm this to you in a letter. This letter will contain our opinion
on the level of your degree (academic or professional) and will also hold the invitation
to attend the orientation committee interview.
In case your application is incomplete, we will ask you to complete your file before
continuing the procedure. You have the time to complete and submit your documents
until the deadline expires.
4. The Orientation Committee interview or audition
A candidate who receives an invitation to the Orientation Committee
audition/interview is required to appear in person in front of the committee
(exceptions to this rule are granted in very rare cases only). You will receive the exact
date and location for the interview in an e-mail the week before the
interview/audition.
5. Announcement of the Interview/Audition results
We aim to inform the candidates on the outcome of their interview/audition at the
latest two weeks after the interview. The results will be communicated per e-mail
only. If you have not heard from us two weeks after your interview/audition, please
contact us for the info. It might mean that the processing of the information took up
a bit more time than scheduled and does not necessarily mean you did not pass the
interview.
6. You passed the interview/audition
Congratulations! Half the work has been done now. In the same letter that informs
that you have passed the interview/audition, we will also invite you to send us your
application documents by postal mail.
Attention: we will require the actual authenticated copies of your diploma,
transcripts and translations at this point. To find out what authentication your
documents need, please consult pages 28 and following of these guidelines.
From experience we have noticed that this point in the procedure is sometimes
slightly misunderstood. We would therefore like to make it absolutely clear that:

we need the actual paper version of these authenticated documents per
postal mail or handed to us physically at the student affairs office

If you do send us your original documents, please be aware that the School of Arts
cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage caused to them before or after the
reception of your originals.
7. Submission of your documents to the School of Arts External Admission Council
Upon reception of your authenticated documents, we will submit your file to the
School of Arts External Admission Council. They will check the authenticity of your
documents and issue an approval letter stating that you may be enrolled as a student
at the School of Arts for the upcoming academic year. At the moment that we receive
this letter, the School of Arts will invite you to come and enroll.
Attention: obtaining the approval letter from SoA External Admission Council may
take some time. The sooner you can provide us with your authenticated documents,
the better and faster the procedure can be concluded in time for the start of the
academic year.
Note: e-mailed documents or documents with copied authentication stamps are not
accepted as legally valid documents.

• If your application file has been approved on the above accounts, your master proposal and digital portfolio will be
forwarded to the members of the orientation committee for feedback.
•When your application file meets the criteria mentioned in 'Verification', you will
receive an invitation to attend the orientation committee interview
•You attend the interview and bring your portfolio with you to the interview

Applications that reach us after this point, will be processed only 1. when time and practical
organization still allow this and 2. the application file is correct and complete. Documents
are to be submitted per postal mail or in person to my desk only! Late submissions will be
processed without guarantee of successful continuation of the application procedure!
1. Pre-register online

documents and digital portfolio no later than two weeks before the submission
deadline, we will ask members of the Orientation Committee panel for feedback
on your work.

All correct and complete application files are also transferred to the School of
Arts External Admission Council.

before continuing the procedure. You have the time to complete and submit your
documents until the deadline expires.

DOCUMENT AUTHENTICATION & TRANSLATION OF YOUR DOCUMENTS.
WHAT IS: AN AUTHENTICATION?
Documents issued by a local authority in Belgium have legal and official value in Belgium. This is
not automatically the case for documents issued by authorities or organizations abroad.
Documents issued abroad need a form of authentication (= mostly a stamp of some kind) to make
them legally valid and acceptable for official use in Belgium.
Depending on the country your diploma was issued in, a different kind of authentication stamp
will need to go on the copies of your diploma, transcripts, supplements and translations to give
them any legal value and proof of authenticity in Belgium. This is the part of your documents that
is verified by the School of Arts External Admission Council and the reason why we require the
copies containing the original authentication stamps from you and not any scans or photocopies.
Without the approval from the School of Arts External Admission Council, we cannot admit a
student to the school.
Receiving the approval from the School of Arts External Admission Council can take up a couple
of weeks. It is therefore in your own importance to start up your procedure as soon as possible.
Apart from the official stamps, your diploma will need following elements:
1. The mention that you are in fact a bachelor in the arts (or in case you apply for an
advanced master: that you are a master in the arts) or the equivalent title of the bachelor
in your country.
2. The date you obtained your diploma
3. The level you attained (if available)
4. Your name
5. The name of the school or institute where you graduated.
Please remember: the School of Arts – University College Ghent does not accept original
diplomas. If you nevertheless decide to send us your original diploma, this is entirely at your own
risk. The school cannot be held liable for loss or damage to your original papers. What we require
are copies that have been certified/legalized/stamped with an apostille.

What authentication method do I need to use for my documents?
Strictly speaking, there are four methods that may apply to official documents, depending on the
country where the diploma was issued. On the next page you’ll find an indication of what action
needs to be taken for which countries. This action is either:
1. No action required or,
2. Certified Copy required or,
3. Apostille Stamp Required or,
4. Legalisation Stamp required
In order to find out what action is required for your country, please consult the List of countries
per authentication method on pages 28 and following.
What is a certification stamp?
A certification stamp is an official stamp issued by your school or local municipality.These are
usually free of charge and quite easy to obtain.
What is an apostille stamp?
The Apostille is a stamp or printed form consisting of 10 numbered standard fields issued by a
competent authority other than your school or local municipality. For a list of competent
authorities, please refer to this list . The Apostille does not give information regarding the quality
of the document, but certifies the signature (and the capacity of who placed it) and correctness of
the seal/stamp on the document which must be certified.

What is a legalization?
Legalization is the procedure of making official documents legally valid and ready for use in a
foreign country. Legalizations are issued by the consulate or embassy of the country you need the
document for in the country your document was issued in (e.g. : a diploma from Iran needs to be
legalized in the Belgian consulate or embassy in Iran). A legalization comes in the form of a stamp
or sticker that has the same lay-out world-wide. Documents from countries who have not signed
or ratified the Convention of The Hague need to be issued with this stamp.

DOCUMENT TRANSLATION
When your documents are not originally issued in Dutch, English, French or German, you are
required to provide us with a translation in either Dutch, English, French or German. This
translation needs to be authenticated as well.
The translation must be done through a sworn translator:
In Belgium:
through a sworn translator linked to the Court of Justice
http://www.juridat.be/eerste_aanleg/index.htm ;
Abroad:
through a sworn translator linked to the Belgian embassy/consulate in
the country of origin (original stamps and signatures).

ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS FOR CHINESE STUDENTS
Since the academic year 2007-2008 all students from the People’s Republic China have to obtain
a certificate of academic screening issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) of the
German Embassy in Beijing before being allowed to enroll at any higher education institution,
language course or other preparatory course in Flanders. The APS certificate is also required for
obtaining a student visa to Belgium. Students planning to study in Flanders in 2015-2016 are
advised to contact the Academic Evaluation Centre in Beijing, e-mail: [email protected] as soon

AUDITION FOR MASTER/ ADVANCED MASTER CANDIDATES IN MUSIC
Meeting with the Orientation Committee – Performing Music: Classical Music
PART 1: Practical exam
About the repertoire
During your practical instrument/voice test you have to show your artistic and
technical level in as many possible ways. The repertoire consists of at least a
half hour program. At least one composition should be contemporary music,
preferably written after 1950.
What to present at the Orientation Committee?
You bring along a program overview with:
· Your name and date of birth
· For each piece:
• Full name of the composer with date of birth (and death)
• Full name of the composition, number of opus (if available) and date of the
composition (if known)
• The part you prepared for this exam
• Example: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756- 1791): Sonata for piano in c
minor (K. 457), (1784), part 1 allegro
With the submission of your application documents, you will also submit your
program scores PDF (e-mail or memory stick). The pieces are in playing order,
confirming your program overview.
Compositions with obliged piano accompaniment or piano reduction (concerti),
have to be performed with piano accompaniment. If an accompanist is required,
you need to indicate this in your application documents. If you have not done
this at the submission deadline, we cannot guarantee that we can provide an
accompanist for you.
PART 2: Intake
After your exam, there will be an intake with the Orientation Committee. The
Orientation Committee consists of several teachers and experts in the field you
are applying for. The Orientation Committee takes a decision on enrolment in
the master course. You will be asked about your motivation, discipline,
communication awareness, your master proposal and knowledge of the specific
domains of performing music.

PART 1: Practical exam
The practical exam consists of two parts:
1) Five standards/songs of your own choice
· If you choose the jazz-option, you will have to prepare five standards/tunes
of your own choice: the conservatory will supply the accompanists.
· If you choose the pop-option, you will have to prepare five pop songs.
BEWARE: for this option, you will have to provide your own accompaniment
(rhythm section) .
2) Prima Vista
You will have to play a standard/song at sight (prima vista). The level of this
song will not be too difficult and will be a jazz/pop song.
During your practical instrument/voice test you have to show your artistic and
technical level in as many as possible ways.
PART 2 : Intake
After your exam, there will be an intake with the Orientation Committee. The
Orientation Committee consists of several teachers and experts in the field you
are applying. The Orientation Committee takes a decision on enrolment in
the master course. You will be asked about your motivation, discipline,
communication awareness, your master proposal and knowledge of the specific
domains of performing music.

PART 1: Practical exam
The practical exam consists of three parts:
1) Test elementary technique on a keyboard/piano
2) Test own instrument (other than keyboard/piano) or test musical expression
instrument (ex. laptop)
3) Evaluation of your compositions portfolio (scores, recordings etc.)
PART 2: Intake
After your exam, there will be an intake with the Orientation Committee. The
Orientation Committee consists of several teachers and experts in the field you
are applying. The Orientation Committee takes a decision on enrolment in the
master course. You will be asked about your motivation, discipline,
communication awareness, your master proposal and knowledge of the specific
domains of composing music.
Meeting with the Orientation Committee – Composing Music: Production
PART 1: Practical exam
The practical exam consists of four parts:
1) Listening test: listening, discussion and comparison of different recordings /
instruments, assessment and description of the sound quality
2) Transcription: notation, by ear, of a lead sheet of a pop song
3) Test own instrument
4) Evaluation portfolio (sound files and lead sheets of your recordings, songs
and compositions, arrangements,... )
PART 2: Intake
After your exam, there will be an intake with the Orientation Committee. The
Orientation Committee consists of several teachers and experts in the field you
are applying. The Orientation Committee takes a decision on enrolment in the
master course. You will be tested/asked about your motivation, discipline,
communication awareness, your master proposal and knowledge of the specific
domains of composing music.

Meeting with the Orientation Committee – Advanced Master
PART 1: Practical exam
Module A – Contemporary Music
All applicants have to prepare a 30-minute programme. The programme for the
audition should consist of music composed after 1950, including one work less
than 10 years old. The program may comprise chamber music or solo
repertoire or may be a mix of both.
Module B – Contemporary Performance Practice
All applicants have to perform a 20-minute program in which they will refer to
the music stated in their master proposal.
PART 2: Intake
After your exam, there will be an intake with the Orientation Committee. The
Orientation Committee consists of several teachers and experts in the field you
are applying for. The Orientation Committee takes a decision on enrolment in
the advanced master course. You will be asked about your motivation,
discipline, communication awareness, your master proposal and knowledge of
the specific domains of performing music.
