Don’t Take Antioxidants – Make Antioxidants! T his idea of “making antioxidants” (naturally within our cells) compared to the standard approach of “taking antioxidants” (in the form of high-dose vitamin supplements) is a fundamentally different approach to protecting the body from oxidative stress – and might just be the future of how we protect ourselves to enhance our overall well-being and improve how we feel, look, and perform at all levels. Ancient medicine systems from around the world, particularly traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda), have used blends of herbs and spices to protect the body, alleviate the symptoms of aging and promote longevity. The herbal/spice blends don’t “give” the body antioxidants like vitamin E or beta-carotene. Instead, these proven and invigorating botanicals emplify the body’s cellular production of its own internal and super potent antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, and many others) by activating a cellular “switch” (Nrf2) for vastly superior antioxidant benefits. So what is Nrf2, exactly? You might think of the Nrf2 pathway as an internal “thermostat” for cellular stress. Whenever a cell is under stress – whether from oxidative stress, inflammatory stress, or any other type of the stress that our modern world might throw at us, the Nrf2 pathway senses the stress and induces numerous protective responses. Some of these responses help to reduce free radical damage, or oxidative stress (antioxidant enzymes), while others help clean up damage (housekeeping proteins) and prepare our cells for exposure to future stressors. In many ways, the natural introduction of Nrf2 is the future of maintaining proper internal balance and holistically protecting our bodies from destructive environmental factors.
