Welcome to the Y.
From Our CEO
Welcome to the Spring Edition of the Door
County YMCA's Program Guide. I hope you
had a safe and uneventful winter and that you
will find time to continue to include the YMCA
in your schedule this spring. Whether you
want to get in shape for summer activities or
learn to swim so you can enjoy water based
activities this summer, the Y has something
for you. Please review our program offerings
and register at the Y or online today. Please
call or stop if you have questions about our
programs.
Also be aware that registration for our Day
Camp programs is now underway for the
summer months. Our day camp program
operates every week of the summer and
we anticipate a summer of fun at Y Camp
Compass.
If you enjoy volunteering in the community,
please mark June 6th on your calendar. That
is the date of our build day for our KaBOOM!
Playground north of the Y in Sturgeon Bay.
200 volunteers will assemble a playground for
the community in one day. Contact the Alexis
Fuller at the Y for details on how you can help.
And finally, we are now in the final weeks of
our Annual Campaign to raise $525,000 to
help honor our promise to serve everyone
without regard to financial ability and provide
community programs like LiveStrong for
cancer survivors and health fairs to lift up
the importance of healthy lifestyles. Please
consider joining us for our Dining Around the
Door celebration at Alpine Resort on Sunday
May 17th. If you have not made a gift to the
Y campaign, please consider a gift today.
We look forward to seeing you often at the Y
this spring.
Tom Beerntsen, CEO

in Sturgeon Bay. In one day, 200 community volunteers will come
together and construct a new playground which will cover more than
2500 square feet! For more information about KaBOOM!, please visit:
kaboom.org
The playground is being built in cooperation with KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to
bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up
in poverty in America. Since 1996, KaBOOM! has partnered to build, open and improve 16,000
playgrounds. The fully-funded $95,000 playground is sponsored by Baylake Bank, the Raibrook
Foundation and Errico and Patrizia Auricchio.

AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS
Let your kids warm-up this Spring with one
or more of their favorite After School Sports!
Each day includes time to learn the basic skills
and fundamentals of the game, along with
an extended amount of game-play. Everyone
plays, everyone wins, and everyone has fun.
The goal for these after-school sessions are
to teach kids to enjoy the different games,
while focusing on the four core values of the
YMCA.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Does your child have a favorite sport that
they really enjoy, or that they have shown
some advanced skill in? If so, private lessons
may be right for your child. Coach Eric has
already been doing lessons for soccer and
basketball, and is open to working oneon-one, or in groups up to four, with your
child. Contact Eric Natwick at the YMCA
for more information. Private lessons are
also available for swimming, martial arts and
gymnastics.

IMAGINE
THE
POSSIBILITIES
We are excited to announce that as of Friday, March 27, we have raised $329,377.79 and are more than 60%
of the way to our goal of $525,000 for this years Annual Campaign (formerly Strong Kids). More than 500
people have given the Y their support to ensure that the Y can serve everyone in our community regardless of
their financial position.
DID YOU KNOW???
• The YMCA is a leading nonprofit organization for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,
serving 45 million people in 124 countries.
• The YMCA of Door County has been serving Door County and its surrounding communities since 1986.
• We serve over 7,900 members annually
• Over 20,000 visits per month from Sturgeon Bay and Northern Door facilities
• Programming is provided to almost one in three residents in Door County
• No one is ever turned away because of their inability to pay
• In 2014, our Annual Campaign provided over $350,000 in financial aid and program assistance to almost
1,500 members.
YOUR DOLLARS ALLOW THE Y TO SERVE:
• 35 students in our Youth In Government program
• Cancer survivors through our LiveSTRONG at the YMCA program
• Participants in the Parkinson Exercise program, who strengthen their muscles and improve balance

SPECIALTY PROGRAMMING
l PARKINSON EXERCISE • Exercising with Parkinson Disease & Parkinson Related Syndromes
An exercise group geared toward individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD) and related syndromes may be just what you’re
looking for; it is designed and led by a physical therapist with experience working with individuals with the syndrome. The
first 30 minutes will be spent on stretching with a focus on trunk mobility. During the remaining 30 minutes, participants will
walk on a treadmill. The theory behind this program is that improved trunk mobility combined with an aerobic conditioning
program should lead to improvement or maintenance of functional activities used in every day life. New participants are always
welcome. Wear comfortable clothes, athletic shoes and bring a water bottle to class. Please call Carl (PT) or Shawn (PTA) with
questions, at Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab at 746-0410. A physical therapist evaluation is required prior to
registration (in most cases this evaluation is covered by Medicare or insurance).

A small-group exercise program for the adult cancer survivor that empowers the participants to improve their health and
quality of life while diminishing the adverse affects of cancer or various cancer treatments. Each 12-week session is comprised
of classes that meet for 75 minutes, twice a week. All program participants receive a FREE family Y membership for the

emotional and physical concerns that cancer survivors face. Each member of our staff team is a Y personal coach and certified
in the Stanford University’s “Living Strong, Living Well” program, which includes training in the elements of cancer, post-cancer
exercise, nutrition and support cancer care. This course of instruction is recommended for anyone who has finished cancer
treatment; participation by those in treatment will be on handled on a case-by-case basis. Express interest by phone, in
person at the Y, or by email to Christine Webb-Miller, at (920) 743-4949 or [email protected].

REAP THE BENEFITS
OF THE REP EFFECTTM
BODYPUMPTM Release 93 Launch date set for April 18
Less than 20 percent of adults regularly do the recommended two strength
training sessions per week according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. If you’re part of the majority that thinks strength training is
only for Hans and Franz, think again.
Strength training does much more for our bodies than build big muscles.
Strength training slows (or even stops) the natural loss of muscle mass as
we age, helps develop strong bones, manages chronic conditions, improves
balance, coordination and posture, as well as releases endorphins for
improved mood. More lean muscle mass means a higher resting metabolic
rate, which translates to the ability to burn more calories during everyday
activities.
If you’re not sure where to get started or hoping to add some regularity to
your lifting routine, let Les Mills BODYPUMP™ guide you. This 60-minute,
strength-training workout choreographed to music is the most popular group
exercise class at the Northern Door Program Center. Designed by exercise
scientists, each quarterly release of the licensed program focuses on THE
REP EFFECT™ – or
using low weights
and high repetitions
to bring about
muscle fatigue,
leading to muscle
tone not bulk, as
well as all of the
benefits listed
above.
BODYPUMP™ Release 93 will be launched at the Northern Door Program
Center on Saturday, April 18th at 9:00 am – join our seven certified
instructors in reaping the benefits of THE REP EFFECT™! Space is limited;
register at the Welcome Center, www.doorcountyymca.org or call 868-3660.

PARKINSON EXERCISE
Exercising with Parkinson Disease & Parkinson Related Syndromes
An exercise group geared toward individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD) and Parkinson Related Syndromes (PRS) may be just
what you’re looking for. These exercise groups are designed and led by a physical therapist with experience working with
individuals that had PD or PRS. Financial assistance is available at the Y. The first 30 minutes will be spent on stretching with
a focus on trunk mobility. During the other 30 minutes, participants will walk on a treadmill. The theory behind this program
is that improved trunk mobility combined with an aerobic conditioning program should lead to improvement or maintenance
of functional activities used in every day life. New participants are always welcome. Wear comfortable clothes, athletic shoes
and bring a water bottle to class. If you have questions please call Carl (PT) or Shawn (PTA) at Ministry Door County Medical
Center Rehab Services at 920-746-0410. A physical therapist evaluation is required prior to registration (in most cases this
evaluation is covered by Medicare or insurance.) Contact Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services for information.
