MENTORING
Sun, Danny (summer 2014)
Noguiera, Veruska A. (summer 2014)
FIELD CAMPAIGNS
September 2014
Investigator, Miami, FL
Examined Lagrangian drifter dispersion and transport in the
upper 1 m of the ocean. Used drifting wave buoys (Herbers et al.
2012) to measure surface-gravity waves and a Nortek HR
Aquadopp to measure near-surface turbulence and velocity
profiles
This work was funded through the GoMRI, CARTHE
consortium grant and by the International Seakeepers Society
December 2013
Research Assistant, Surfzone and Coastal Oil Pathways
Experiment (SCOPE), Destin, FL
Worked to design and operate University of Miami’s Surface
Physics Experimental Catamaran. The vessel was rigged with a
myriad of in-situ and near-field remote sensing meteorological
and oceanographic instruments.
Including, among other
instruments, a complete flux package, ADCP, ADVs,
polarimeter, and infrared camera
Helped investigators from Texas A&M University at Corpus
Christi deploy an Optical Turbulence Sensor and a Vertical
Microstructure Profiler
This work was funded through the GoMRI, CARTHE
consortium grant
July – November 2013
Investigator, Biscayne Bay, Miami, FL
Examined near-surface ocean dynamics, as well as,
analyzing/comparing Lagrangian drifter designs/construction
This work was funded through the GoMRI, CARTHE
consortium grant
May - June 2013
Research Assistant aboard the R/V Point Sur, Office of Naval
Research’s DRI RIVET 2 Mouth of the Columbia River, Astoria,
OR
Responsibilities included set up monitoring of numerous
meteorological, acoustic, and optical sensors as well as the
analog and digital data acquisition systems for the instruments
This work was funded by the Office of Naval Research
April 2013
Project Leader, AMP 698 Class Project, Biscayne Bay, Miami,
FL
Along with co-Leader, was responsible for planning, executing,
and analyzing the data collected during the class project
This work was funded by the Applied Marine Physics Division
at RSMAS-Univ. Miami
February - March 2013
CTD Watch Stander aboard the NOAA ship Ronald H. Brown,
NOAA Western Boundary Time Series RB1302

October 2009
Research Assistant, Imperial Beach Pollutant Transport and
Dilution Experiment, Scripps Institute of Oceanography,
Imperial Beach, CA
Worked on, and operated, a small research vessel from which a
small CTD, Niskin bottle package was deployed and
recovered, in addition to taking surface water and biological
samples.
From beach, aided with the deployment and
recovery of GPS-equipped surface drifters
