The System of Good Design Award
Good Design Award is a comprehensive design commendation system organized by Japan Institute of
Design Promotion (JDP) for the purpose of leading our lives, industry, and society at large to be better
through selecting Good Designs from various events and commending them. The system leads to the
creation of future society in cooperation with Applicants. The Good Design Award is a system not just to
select good designs but to lead the creation of future society in cooperation with Applicants through cycle
of the three points below:

Definition of Design in Good Design Award
The word design is used with various meanings in the world and the interpretations of the word varies from
person to person. However, many of the interpretations could be integrated, as follows:
1.Design as a noun (the shape of a tangible or intangible object, appearance)
2.Design as a verb (actions to think and generate new tangible and intangible objects)
In the Good Design Award, the word design is regarded especially as 2, or a verb. Design is defined as
endless and continuous creative thinking activities to make our lives better.
When regarding design as activity or action,
thought or philosophy is required and a newly generated
tangible or intangible object is seen as one solution. In the Good Design Award, comprehensive screening is
conducted with asking Is the solution appropriate for the purpose? as well as Does the solution lead a
chain of creation in the future society? , focusing on thought or philosophy which has been infused when
deriving the solution and the methodology which is used in the process of deriving the solution.
3
Mission of the Good Design Award and a Request for Judges
So many designs surround us in the forms of tangible and intangible objects. The purpose of the Good
Design Award is not only to evaluate a design as a unity of shapes and colors but also to interpret will,
thought, methodology, and proposal for the future infused in the design and convey them in a simple
way, in order to provide awareness for the future creation.
The Good Design Award will plan various means to provide such awareness in screening and other settings.
We would like you to understand your role to provide Applicants and citizens with awareness for future
activities and participate in screening and various other projects.

Judging Policy
4-1.Definition of Good Design
The Good Design Award has decided five items called Good Design Award Ideals which are necessary
requirements for good designs as judging policy. In the Good Design Award screening, the first thing to be
questioned is if the applied objects have any outstanding nature in regard to the recitals.
Good Design Award Ideals
HUMANITY
… the creativity that guides the making of things
HONESTY
… the ability to clearly see the nature of modern society
INNOVATION
… the vision to open up the future
ESTHETICS
… the imagination to evoke a rich life and culture
ETHICS
… the thoughtfulness to shape society and the environment
4-2.Judging Viewpoints
The Good Design Award places primary importance upon selecting creative activities (actions to generate
new tangible and intangible objects) which contribute to the creation of a better society. That is, the
screening is conducted not only to question the quality of products, projects, and activities themselves, but
also to judge if the applied tangible and intangible objects are good for the future society (whether or not
the activities should be supported) from comprehensive and multiple near-future perspectives, taking into
consideration contribution to or impact on industry and society as well as importance. Also, please conduct
screening with the viewpoints below when making judgment:
Human perspective
○ Whether due considerations, including usability, understandability, and friendliness, etc.,
are given to users
○ Whether various considerations, including safety, security, environment, physically weak persons,
etc., are given to maintain the credibility
○ Whether the design gains sympathy of users
○ Whether the design has attractiveness and induces users creativity
Industrial perspective
○ Whether issues are skillfully solved by using new technology and materials or through creativity
○ Whether the item is reasonably designed or planned with appropriate technology, method,
and quality
○ Whether the item contributes to the creation of new industry or business
Social perspective
○ Whether the item contributes to the creation of new culture, such as a new method, lifestyle,
communication, etc.
○ Whether the item contributes to the realization of the sustainable society
○ Whether the item suggests new value, such as a new method, concept, style, etc. to society

Judging Method
6-1.Judging Unit
The Good Design Awards are basically judged through discussion. However, because of the wide-ranging
domains of Subject Entries, groups to judge the Subject Entries professionally (hereafter, Judging Units )
are formed according to genres, and each Judging Unit holds discussion and decides whether to pass the
Subject Entry. In addition, each Judging Unit places a Judging Unit Leader who coordinates the unit. The
Judging Unit Leader basically has authority to make final decisions for various decision issues which have
arisen in each Judging Unit. When the decision issue is hard for the Judging Unit Leader to judge, the Chair
and Vice Chair make a final decision.

the future society. To conduct deep discussions on these themes, special teams are formed by Topical Issue
Directors who are in charge of such themes and the teams carry out discussions about possibilities in the
future society along with each theme, while observing Subject Entries. The discussion contents are referred
to in the screening for Special Awards and are written down as opinions in the exhibition of Good Design
Award winning objects, Good Design Exhibition (G-Exhibition) of this year.

7
9-4.First Screening Panel
Passing or failing of Subject Entries is judged through this panel for the purpose of selecting objects whose
actual objects should be judged in the second screening.
Task
1.Decide Subject Entries which pass the First Screening
Because actual objects are judged in the Second Screening Panel, a lot of burdens will be imposed on Applicants.
Please regard the first screening as a task to reduce unnecessary burdens imposed on Applicants as much as
possible. Therefore, please judge in the first screening with a viewpoint of whether or not to let the object pass
in principle.
2.Examine objects for which additional data is required in the Second Screening Panel, and objects
which require special screening.
Some Subject Entries are judged to require special actions, such as presentations, On-site Screening, and
checking additional data submitted in the form of videos etc. Please examine which object requires a special
action.
3.Examine objects to be chosen as Judges Recommendation
Please discuss what kind of objects should be recommended as Judges Recommendation (described later).
Judging

Application Sheet, and filed in order of the number of votes obtained, on a table of each Judging Unit. Check
the Application Sheets, and discuss and decide whether to pass the Subject Entry centering on a Unit Leader,
based on the standards below. In case the Subject Entry needs to be moved to another unit, please deal with it in
the same process as the Judge General Meeting.

Please fail a Subject Entry if it has obviously low value or quality when seen from each viewpoint written in 4-2.
Judging Viewpoints.
Special
Screening
In the Second Screening, alternative items such as panels are exhibited for objects which are difficult to install
(architecture, large equipment, etc.). Also, details of some Subject Entries need to be explained, depending on
the nature of the Subject Entries. That is, some Subject Entries require special screening as below, depending on
their nature.
1.Screening for Undisclosed Subject Entries
The application rule of the Good Design Award is that tangible and intangible objects which can be purchased

development or cannot be disclosed as a product when the Second Screening Panel is conducted. In this case,
screening will be conducted in a room which has high confidentiality and is different from the ordinal screening
hall on a designated date and in a short time, in order to prevent information leakage to people other than
8
Judges and assistants. In this case, interactive screening is also conducted at the same time.
2.On-site Screening
Some objects which are difficult to install are judged that the actual object should be checked on site in the
discussion of each Judging Unit. In this case, each Judging Unit requests On-site Screening to Applicants, and
judges the object by checking the actual object on site in addition to the Second Screening Panel. The On-site
Screening is conducted within the Second Screening Period (from July 10 to September 9).
3.Other Special Screening
Other than the above, if any special action such as a request of additional information or presentation by an

way to conduct it is decided through consultation with office members.
