Syracuse 600 Club
Christmas Tournament
Norine Faatz (center) won the Syracuse 600 Club Christmas Tournament on Dec. 7 at
Erie Blvd. Lanes. Faatz finished with a 768 handicap series. Stacey Miller (left) took
second while Kristina Kirby (right) was third. For more on the tournament, go to page 2.
At 92,
senior bowlers
still go strong
They call him Mr. Smooth.
Ralph Tolone garnered the nickname from his buddies
at Pastimes Athletic Club for his traditional bowling style.
His old-school delivery is reminiscent of bowlers from another generation. His generation.
At 92, the silky-smooth Tolone is still rolling strikes and
picking up spares in the Pastimes Tuesday Senior League.
It’s not uncommon that he outscores bowlers 20 and 30
years younger. He’s averaged 182, not an easy task on Pastimes’ wooden lanes.
“Bowling is something I like to do in the winter,” Tolone
said. “I’m constantly adjusting. I don’t have a lot of speed
anymore so I have to play angles.”
“He looks like he’s 70,” fellow league bowler Bob Levine said. “He’s so consistent. You’d never know he’s 92.”
Ralph Tolone
Tolone, of Warners, isn’t the only 92-year-old bowling
on a weekly basis. Robert Dehm, of East Syracuse, is also
a full-time member of the Monday Mixed Trio League
at Bowl Mor Lanes. Both Tolone and Dehm bowl with
15-pound balls.
“It doesn’t bother me,” Dehm said. “I’m used to it.”
Tolone and Dehm are also U.S. veterans. Tolone served in the United States Navy, while Dehm
served four years in the Marine Corps. Dehm, who uses a Marine-themed bowling ball, started
bowling after he got out of the service.
“I bowl for the fun of it,” said Dehm, who is averaging 149 this year. “If you’re not having fun,
why do it?”
Tolone admits golf is his first love, but said he’s a better bowler than he is a golfer. He started
bowling in 1960 when he worked for General Electric.
“It’s challenging and you get to meet a lot of nice people,” Tolone said. “When you do well, it’s
gratifying. But when you don’t, it can be agonizing.”
Like Dehm, Tolone bowls to have fun.
“I bowled once in a classic league but never again,” Tolone said. “It wasn’t for me. They were
very serious about it, agonizing over every shot. I didn’t have any fun. I like to bowl good, but you
have to be able laugh and have some fun, too.”

Faatz takes first at
600 Club event
(continued from page 1)
Norine Faatz blew away the competition with a scratch 759 series to win the Syracuse 600
Club Christmas Tournament on Dec. 7 at Erie Blvd. Lanes.
Faatz finished with a 768 handicap total. She had 10 straight strikes in her last game to finish
with a tournament-high 288 game. Stacey Miller was second with a 699 handicap total. Kristina
Kirby rounded out the top three with a 684 handicap total.
The tournament drew 33 entries. The next 600 Club tournament is Feb. 15 for the Sweetheart
Doubles at Bowl Mor Lanes.
(Left to right) Brendan Connor, Ed Clark and Dick Donegan.
Ed Clark/Dick Donegan: Clark rolled a 299 game in his second game on his way
to an 803 series Oct. 31 at Erie Blvd. Lanes. These were Clark’s first career Syracuse BA
award scores.
Clark lives in Auburn and travels each week with his teammates from the Kostas’ Restaurant team to bowl. In his career, Clark has 13 perfect games and five 800 series, all bowled
in the Auburn BA.
On the same night in the same Thursday Men’s League at Erie Blvd. Lanes a few lanes
down from Clark, Dick Donegan rolled his second career 300 game using a borrowed ball.
Donegan’s vehicle broke down that night and he forgot take his bowling ball out of the
car. When he got to the lanes, he borrowed a ball from teammate Brendan Connor and
rolled a perfect game. His first 300 was way back in 1995 at the Valley Sports Center.
Connor also did well Oct. 31. Using his another ball in the bag, Connor rolled a 280 the
same game. – Doug Sprague
Gary Peterson: Peterson continued to build a hall of fame resume with his 17th career 300 game and his seventh career 800 series while bowling in the Coop’s Mixed Trio
League at the B’ville Sports Bowl on Nov. 21. Peterson fired games of 268, 300 and 236 on
route to an 804 series. He used a Storm IQ Pearl drilled by Cliff Saliba. – Kevin Peirson
Seniors post award scores: On Dec. 2, Jim Biancavilla and Bob Ramstad rolled
award scores in the Port City Seniors League at Lighthouse Lanes. Biancavilla fired an 812
series that featured a 288 game while Ramstad had a 290 game for an 11-in-a-row award
Ramstad finished with a 667 series.
Teammates pick up 7-10 split: Teammates John Kirchoff and Joe Ferrini pulled
off a rare feat as both bowlers converted the 7-10 split Dec. 2 at AMF Strike N Spare. Kirchoff finished with a 739 series while Ferrrini rolled a 730 bowling in the Wallace Westfall
Memorial League.
Steve Salce: Salce had a big night at Bowl Mor Lanes Dec. 6 with games of 299, 290
and 245 for a career-best 834 series.

In memory: Peter Moro Sr.
Editor’s note: As a competitor and as a Bowl Mor Lanes employee for many years, bowling
meant a lot to Peter Moro Sr., who passed away Dec. 10. Moro Sr., the youngest of five sons,
bowled with and against some of the best in the city throughout his career. He continued to show
that competitive fire on the lanes until he could no longer bowl because of illness.
“My favorite part about bowling is the camaraderie and my love of the competition,”
Moro said in 2011.
Former Striker contributor Jody VanLiew talked to Moro in 2011 about his best
bowling memories. Here’s a look back at that interview in remembrance of Peter.
Who introduced you to bowling? I started in junior leagues at Bowl Mor Lanes on
Salina St. I bowled with Dom Cefalo, Mike Cefalo and Steve Angeloro.
Bowling idol: My brother Ono. He taught me how to bowl.
Top bowling accomplishments: I made the 2-4-5 spare to win the City Tournament
in 1976 with Santaro Trucking team. I had high average of 198 for both divisions in
Greater Syracuse in 1975. My high finish in the Post Standard Masters tournament
in 2004 (5-2 record, 217 match play average).
Least favorite moment: Two of my 299 games I left ten pins.
Favorite league: Greater Syracuse League. I have been fortunate to have won the
league title three times with Santaro Trucking team.
Peter Moro Sr. enjoyed competing on the bowling lanes including annual trips to
the national tournament. Moro’s team from the 1978 American Bowling Congress
Championship included: (l to r) Ono Moro, Dom Cefalo, Joe Borello, Joe Creno and
Peter Moro.

By Aaron Smith, USBC Communications
Jason Queen, of Forsyth, Ill., mastered demanding conditions throughout the 2012-2013

The 1997 USBC Masters champion averaged 228 over the course of 128 games in the
Decatur Sport League at Spare Time Lanes to take the honor. The 40-year-old right-hander
fired an 826 set during the season, marking his third career 800 Sport series.
Adriana Mazyck, 29, of Canoga Park, Calif., claimed the Female Sport Bowling National
High Average Award, registering a 203 average for 104 games in the Del Guyer Sport Trios
league at Corbin Bowl.
Tyler Schimmer, 18, of St. Louis took the Youth Male Sport Bowling National High
Average Award. He posted a 207 average for 48 games at the PFC - Sport Shot Singles Winter league at St. Charles Lanes.
Stephanie Penxa, 20, of Romeo, Mich., earned the Youth Female Sport Bowling National

rolled three 300s in a row to start his qualifying block at the PBA50 Sun Bowl In The
Villages at Spanish Springs Lanes in The Villages, Fla., on April 21. Scarborough's performance marked the first 900 series in the history of the Professional Bowlers Association.

(Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of editorials about local bowling by a bowler who remains passionate about the integrity of game.)
Bowling finds itself in a difficult situation these days. Sometimes the accomplished bowler struggles to stop the ball from hooking too much. On the other
hand, some handicap bowlers get significant area on the lanes (from the 10th board
to the gutter) to hook the ball.
This is a dilemma proprietors face as they try to figure out what conditions to put
out. You can’t blame them for catering to bowlers who need more “area” because
they have to do what helps makes them money in the bowling business.
As to what direction the future of bowling is going, well only time will tell. We
all know the number of bowling centers has declined. Perhaps one of the reasons
why is maybe league bowling is headed in a different direction.
I think at this point in time we have gone from a truly great sport to a game. It’s
now turning into an entertainment game where we just throw the ball in the dark
with colored lights and loud music. The hope used to be this type of bowling would
make kids want to bowl more. But it’s hard to believe league bowling would be in
their future since leagues are down in this area.
I can see why proprietors in this area are leaning toward “entertainment” marketing. Maybe in other parts of the country bowling is still a sport and not a game.
Most bowlers have seen championship tournament play significantly reduced lo-
cally. The newest element of bowling today is the PBA pattern leagues. These
leagues are trying to bring back the integrity of the game. It has definitely lowered
bowling averages. It has also cut down the amount of award scores.
It would be nice to bring back the days when a 300 game, 800 series or even a
900 series were unheard of. From the 1940s through the 1990s, a 300 or 800 really
meant something to people. I find it hard to believe a bowler on a hard condition
could throw 36 strikes in a row or even on an easy one.
Most bowlers today don’t realize that at one time the lanes were checked on the
same night when a 300 was thrown. Today, the award score is passed as soon as the
score is rolled without the lanes ever being checked. The days of people cheering
for a bowler who is bowling a great score or series is gone.
I remember the days when you may see 10, 15 or maybe 20 award scores a year
not 15 or 20 per week. The USBC has changed how many awards they give to one
person per year because of the amount of award scores thrown today. I would think
it is the cost of the awards but they did not lower the sanction fee, they raised it.
This should tell everyone that the sport has changed into a less challenging, higher
scoring game for most bowlers. Has the USBC sat back and let this happen to this
sport or are there other factors? If you still think bowling hasn’t changed then that’s
okay. But for the bowlers of the past, they understand it has.

Bowlers competing in short-season leagues that begin March 1, 2014, or later can purchase
a USBC membership at a reduced price.
The new USBC Adult Basic membership will be available for bowlers who compete in
leagues that have 16 or fewer sessions. The membership will cost $10, not including state
dues, and it provides a USBC-certified average so bowlers can compete in local, state and
national tournaments.
Tournament
director Jan
Moro talks to the
bowlers before the
start of the 600
Club Christmas
Tournament on
Dec. 7 at Erie Blvd.
Lanes.
In addition to the league having 16 or fewer sessions, the league must designate as a
short-season league; the league's prize fund will be bonded. Each USBC Adult Basic membership will be good only for that league, which means if a bowler wants to participate in
another short-season league, they would have to purchase another USBC Adult Basic membership.
"USBC membership flexibility is important for association leaders and proprietors as they
create programs for bowlers," said USBC President Andrew Cain. "The Adult Basic membership was developed so associations will have a lower-cost product for bowlers who compete
in short-duration leagues."
High score achievements will be recognized and officially recorded by USBC, but awards
such as rings and plaques are not included in the USBC Adult Basic membership. Members
do have the option to purchase high score awards. Membership cards will be electronic only
for the USBC Adult Basic membership.
Bowlers with a current Adult Standard membership would not be required to purchase a
USBC Adult Basic membership to compete in a short-season league and would be eligible for
honor score awards earned in the league.
At the 2012 USBC Annual Meeting, delegates approved a change to have all memberships
end each July 31. The USBC Adult Basic membership was designed to provide a reasonablypriced alternative for proprietors and bowlers who want a USBC membership for short-season leagues, particularly in the spring or summer.
Of the $10 cost for the USBC Adult Basic membership, $7 will go to USBC National and
$3 to the local association. State associations may charge their current dues which could add,
at most, $1 to the cost.
For more information on the short-season membership, go to Bowl.com.

High school bowling season underway
Two-time defending Section III girls champion Fulton and reigning CNYCL boys champion
Oswego are among the favorites in high school bowling again this season. Here’s a quick look at
the teams and bowlers to watch.
GIRLS
Fulton, led by senior Mikayla Guernsey, is the defending Onondaga High School League champions. The Raiders will be tough to beat but East Syracuse Minoa, league runner-up last season,
will be hot on their trail. The Spartans have a solid lineup with senior Christina Episcopo as a
key returnee.
In the CNYCL, Auburn hopes to reclaim the league title it lost to Baldwinsville last year. Junior
Kaylee Fallat leads a squad of experienced bowlers for the Maroons. Baldwinsville will counter
with two veteran bowlers, Britni Flask and Taeler Kuss.
The Syracuse
combined team
return Alex Winzens
(left) and Isaiah Days.
BOYS
Oswego hopes to repeat as CNYCL champs with all-league shot-makers Matt Clemons and
Joey Clavelli. Clemons led the league with a 235 average last year while Clavelli averaged 215.
Auburn features Andrew Kopec and Jordan Tabone, who are among the top bowlers in the
CNYCL. Tabone rolled a perfect game in high school action last winter.
There’s no doubt Utica Proctor is the team to beat at sectionals. The defending Section III
champions return their entire lineup including Ben Loughlin (217 average). The Raiders compete
in the Tri-Valley League during the regular season.
In the OHSL, East Syracuse Minoa will look to dethrone Fulton. The Spartans have their top
three bowlers back: Sean Gavan (207 average), Nate Piston (202) and Ryan MacCombie (190).
The Raiders have decent firepower with Bryce Guernsey (204), Kyle Denson (199) and Shawn
Walberger (190).
Good luck to all varsity bowlers this winter!
