It is that time of year again! We need your help to raise money to cure Cystic Fibrosis.
Dr. Mark Kurth in the Chemistry Department at UC Davis has some very special
graduate students working on exciting developments to not only cure Cystic Fibrosis but
cure one of the main bacterial infections that invade the lungs of Cystic Fibrosis patients
called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, commonly referred to as PA.
The problem with the gene Tara is affected with, called ∆F508, is two fold. First, we must
get the CFTR protein to the cell surface, with what is called a corrector. Second we must
get that CFTR protein to function on the cell surface, with what is called a potentiator.
The FDA recently approved a potentiator for use in patients that have a broken CFTR
protein on the cell surface. Remember, Tara’s protein is not only broken, there’s no way
for it to get to the cell surface yet. This new potentiator won’t help Tara today, but maybe
someday we’ll have a co/po, “corrector and potentiator”, to help patients like Tara with
Cystic Fibrosis that have this most common gene and basic defect.
As the “Tara K. Telford Graduate Student Award” is an endowment it will generate
research dollars on a yearly basis. All additions to the fund will serve to increase the
annual payout. Please join us in finding a cure for Cystic Fibrosis by supporting this
research at UC Davis. Our goal is to raise $5,000 in 2015.

Tara K. Telford Graduate Student Award
The Tara K. Telford Graduate Student Award was created through the generosity of Allan and Jean
Telford to support graduate student research to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. The fund will give first
preference to students working under Professor of Chemistry Mark Kurth, whose research is focused on
small-molecule therapy to correct the ΔF508 gene mutation – the mutation identified in nearly 90% of all
CF cases. This fund was created in honor of the Telford’s daughter-in-law Tara, a UC Davis alumna, who
is courageously living with this inherited chronic disease. Thank you for your consideration!
