EAGLE’S WINGS The mission statement of Eagle United Methodist Church is To Grow Disciples for Jesus Christ Christ. MAY 2015 volume 21 • number 5 SPRING WORK PARTY Mark you calendar to get your hands dirty at the Spring Work Party on Saturday, May 9th from 9–noon. Bring your gloves, edgers, blowers and any other weeding tools you might need to get the job done! GET INVOLVED IN A NEW MISSION The Help Build Hope event brings a mission trip to the parking lot of our church! During the event, participants frame walls for a home or ministry facility that are then donated to a partnering organization, in our case, Habitat for Humanity. The walls are transported to the partnering organization who is responsible for the completion of the project. Our event will be held June 13th. We need to raise $8,000 for all of the supplies for the event to be able to bless a local family with this home. ALL AGES, children through adults are encouraged to participate! For more information or questions, please contact Jessica Blais at 208-473-6700. Sign up sheet for volunteers is in the main hallway next to the church on the wall. We will have a “to-do” list for both inside and outside so come early for treats at 8:30am and help us keep our facility and grounds looking great! ALL CHURCH PICNIC Staying home for Memorial Day weekend? Join in the fun Sunday, May 24th following worship as we gather for an All Church Picnic at 12:15pm. The church will supply the hamburgers, hotdogs, buns and beverages as well as place settings. You bring a side dish to share. This is always a great picnic and a wonderful time for fellowship and relaxation. Any grill masters willing to grill the hamburgers and hotdogs? Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10th. We would like to honor the women in our lives who have meant so much to us by creating a wall in the hallway that celebrates moms, grandmothers, aunts, sisters or a good friend. Please bring in a picture of you and the woman that you would like to honor and place it on the wall. We will begin building the wall the week of May 4th. Special tape will be provided to protect your picture. Please put your names on the front of the picture(s) so we know who you are honoring! What a great way to say “I love you” to that special person who has made a difference in your life! Do you know an upcoming graduate from high school, college, or graduate school? We will be honoring the graduates in worship on Sunday, May 17th. Please let the office know so that they may be included in the recognition. Send pictures of them as a baby, growing up and of their senior picture for our presentation in worship by Monday, May 11th. Also, all graduates are invited to set up a “brag table” to show off their accomplishments and share where they will be continuing their education. Tables will be provided and set up should be completed before 10:45am worship on that Sunday morning. WORDS FROM PASTOR JOHN WORSHIP THEMES FOR MAY SUNDAY, MAY 3 HOLY COMMUNION YOUTH SUNDAY SUNDAY, MAY 10 MOTHER’S DAY CONFIRMATION SUNDAY "The Wedding Banquet" Matthew 22:1-14 God's invitation makes its way to all. Will you come? SUNDAY, MAY 17 GRADUATE SUNDAY "Workers in the Vineyard" Matthew 20:1-16 The work is the blessing and the joy. SUNDAY, MAY 24 PENTECOST SUNDAY Dear Friends, How do we come to commit our lives to Christ? While people of all ages become believers, studies show that most people make decisions of faith while they are very young. The top age for making a decision of faith is 13-14. Because of this, we try to help young people in our church to learn about our faith and draw closer to Jesus. In September, our 7th and 8th graders began Confirmation class. It is an intensive program where youth learn about the Bible, Christian history, and Christian beliefs. They also learn about how to live the faith. There are art projects, special experiences and things to learn and memorize. At the end of the class, youth are offered an opportunity to make a decision of faith. This decision is an important one. Some will be ready to make a decision and others will not and that is fine. God’s great gift to us is the gift of freedom. We stress to our confirmees that any faith decision is theirs to make. It does not belong to their parents or to the church. Confirmation Sunday will be on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 10. We will honor all the students who completed the class requirements. We will pray over them and honor their achievement. Some will choose to join or be baptized and others will not. It will be their decision. Please lift our confirmation class in your prayers and ask for God to bless them in their study. God Bless, "The Parable of the Ten Virgins" Matthew 25:1-13 Be ready! Wait on the Lord with expectation and hope. SUNDAY, MAY 31 "Ten Minas" Luke 19:11-27 We need to use what God has given us to the best of our abilities. It is called that because Pentecost is when the apostles went out among the people and began spreading Jesus' message, thus establishing the beginning of the Church. Room 201 WORSHIP AND MUSIC MINISTRY MUSIC FOR ALL AGES AND GENRES! SINGING HIS PRAISES! We need to hear the word of the Lord. We need to feel it live within our hearts. We need to know the plan God has for us, so we can do our part. We need to know the love of the Lord. We need to learn to share it every day. We need to seek the path God wants for us, so we can find our way. We are called as Disciples of Christ to proclaim the wonder of His grace. If we live in His love and walk in His light, we will grow as a family of faith. Thank you to our musicians for sharing your gifts of music in worship. The talents of those that participated were God-given and our congregation has been blessed! Nancy Price and Don Besig ADULT CHOIR The choir continues to prepare music to present in worship through the May 31st. Choir rehearsals are Thursday evenings at 7pm in the Music Room through May 14th. There is a place for all voices - Jr. High and older. ILLUMINATIONS The Adult Choir is finishing it’s season on May 31st and over the summer months we will be looking to have YOU share your musical gift in worship. Please let Luanne know that you would like to sing, play an instrument, participate in an ensemble, whatever! Our Worship Band leads our congregational singing. Vocalists and instrumentalists are encouraged to be a part of this worship leadership team. We rehearse on Thursday evenings at 5:30pm in the Music Room and warm up prior to worship at 8:30am each Sunday. We are looking for a drummer - let Luanne know if you are interested or know someone who is experienced! PROCLAMATION BELLS Do you love music but singing isn’t your thing? Our handbell choir is a great place to share your gifts in worship and be a part of a great fellowship of musicians. If you are interested in finding out more about handbells, you are invited to come to our rehearsals each Sunday afternoon at 4pm in the Music Room through May 24th. We have room for more ringers - check us out on Sunday afternoons! Our Worship Band will continue to lead in worship throughout the summer months. We rehearse prior to worship and are looking for guitarists, drummers and other instrumentalists to lead our congregation in praise songs and hymns. To find out how to participate in any of these groups or for more information about our music ministry, please contact Luanne Hardy, Director of Music Ministries. She may be reached at the church office at 939-0108 or by email at [email protected]. PROJECTION / MEDIA TECHS NEEDED! Our Media Team is looking for folks to join the team. The Projection Tech's job is to prepare the computer and the images that are projected on the screen during worship and other special events. No special skills are needed - we will teach you all you need though a general comfort with using a computer is helpful. Our Media Techs manage the sound each Sunday by setting up, checking the setup with the musicians, managing the sound in worship and then tearing down following the service. If you love techy stuff - this would be a great fit for you! If you are interested in serving Christ through our media ministry, please contact Matt Donaldson or Luanne Hardy at 939-0108 or through the church office. WORDS FOR THE WALK The idea of writing down our faith experience is as old as the Gospels, or the Epistles to be exact. But it does not end there. We each experience God differently and we do it all the time through many different stages in our lives. This Small Group puts those experiences on paper as people of faith have been doing through the centuries in prayer, prose and poetry. You do not have to know how to write, you just have to know God. The class meets the first Monday of each month at 7pm in room 202. REACHING THOSE IN NEED COVERED IN PRAYER At the Covered in Prayer meeting in April the tables in room 203 were filled with colorful items the group has made. The picture to the left is a pillowcase dress with matching drawstring bag that was made for Operation Shoebox. The group has already completed 113 of the Hope Bags and all of the Pocket Prayers for the Operation Shoeboxes to be assembled in November. Members are also making items for St. Luke’s Pediatric Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Instructions for the group’s projects are available at the “Wrapped and Covered in Prayer” display in the lobby of the church. The items will be blessed during worship before they are given away. Another way to support this ministry is to write a check to the church with “Covered in Prayer” in the memo area. Covered in Prayer’s next meeting is May 13, from 10:00 am to noon in room 201. The group will then take a break until September. Come join us in May if you are interested in being part of this rewarding ministry! WRAPPED IN PRAYER The Wrapped in Prayer group continues to be amazed at how God is using the work of our hands to bring comfort. A member of the church recently gave a shawl to a friend who had a stroke. He told her he wears it all the time and feels our prayers and God’s loving arms wrapped around him. Another member of our church met a woman while waiting at a local hospital and felt led afterwards to give shawls to the woman and her husband who was undergoing treatment for Stage 4 lung cancer. One of our knitters came to our last meeting with a lam- inated copy of a poem about miscarriage. It was written by a member of the Word for the Walk group at our church. She asked us to include the poem when a shawl is going to someone who has suffered a miscarriage. A short time later another member of Wrapped in Prayer arrived and said she wanted to select a shawl for her niece who had just had a miscarriage…and the poem was ready to include with her shawl. This month the shawls will be blessed during worship on May 17. Please come forward after the service to select one if you or someone you know is going through a diffi- cult time. Members of Wrapped in Prayer will help you select a shawl. There are always pocket prayers available to take in the basket at the “Wrapped and Covered in Prayer” display in the lobby of the church. Wrapped in Prayer will meet on May 6 and 20 from 10:00 am to noon in room 201 at the church. We are taking a break from meeting for the summer until September but will still be knitting and crocheting items at home. The shawls will continue to be blessed during worship over the summer and available to those in need.
