Ford Hits the 90 Percent Mark
for Structural Completion
Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) reached 90 percent structural completion in
the building of Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) on Dec. 19. During the week of
Dec. 10, NNS added three units to the aircraft carrier. Two of the units were
sponsons, which are structures that project from the side of the hull and provide
the space needed for flight deck operations. One of the sponsons was 140 feet
long and weighed 391 metric tons, making it one of the largest sponsons to
be erected. In addition, shipbuilders installed 3 million feet of cable of the
estimated total 10 million feet to be installed. Continued on p. 2

NNS Shipbuilders Give to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank
Newport News shipbuilders donated more than $23,500
and more than 31,000 pounds of non-perishable food to
the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank during Newport News
Shipbuilding’s (NNS) 2012 Holiday Food Drive.
“We are fortunate to employ an extraordinary group of
people at NNS,” said Chavis Harris, director, EEO,
Diversity and Corporate Citizenship. “Each year we
challenge our folks to give back to the community, and
each year their generosity raises the bar. We are proud of
Jan. 2 - 4, 2013
their kindness and happy to support such a worthy cause.”
In addition to spurring generosity, the food drive sparked
shipbuilders’ competitive spirit and creativity. Food
donations that were collected were stacked to build
pyramids, Christmas trees and used to fill offices from desk
to door.
“We are thrilled and humbly appreciate all that Newport
News Shipbuilding’s employees do... Continued on p. 3

NNS Honors Production Planning Course Graduates
Career and Professional Development hosted graduation for 15 Planning Production Course graduates on Nov. 29.
The course, taught through East Carolina University, consisted of 72 hours of classroom study in four modules: master
planning and scheduling, material requirements planning, production activity control and inventory management. The
Planning Production Course has had 841 graduates from more than 60 different departments since its first graduation
in 1998. Twenty more shipbuilders are expected to start the course in January 2013. For additional information on the
Production Planning Course, contact Stan Balson (O44) at 688-2149.
CVN 78 Hits the 90 Percent Mark for Structural
Completion
Continued from p. 1... “The entire construction team has done a great job in
reaching the 90 percent structural completion milestone,” said Rolf Bartschi,
vice president of CVN 78 Carrier Construction. “All of our shipbuilders take
great pride in seeing the flight deck take shape and in the work they have
accomplished to build the systems and spaces within the ship. The lifts we
have accomplished are massive, which is in keeping with our larger-unit build
strategy. Our electricians have installed 3 million feet of cable to date and install
on average 10,000 feet of cable a day. Our shipbuilders continue to demonstrate
their capabilities and commitment to a quality product.”
Ford has been under construction since November 2009 and is scheduled to
launch in 2013.

Shipbuilders Share Their
Thoughts About Giving
“We’ve all been blessed with a job
here at the shipyard, so I think we
can all give at least a little bit. You
never know when you could be in
the position of relying on others, so
I think it’s always important to help
out when you can.”
James Poindexter (X31/X88)
“This year, our department decided
to collect the money that we would
usually spend on a gift for our boss
and donate it to the food bank.”
Teresa Messick (X31)
“I took my 9-year-old son with me
when I went out and purchased food
for this year’s food drive. I explained
to him that there will be needy kids
that may not have a something to
eat this year at Christmas. I told him
there will be a lot of kids that are not
as fortunate as we are and we need
to help them. My 9-year-old son
proceeded to help by picking out
the things kids would like to eat.”
Bonnie Lindsay (X15)
“My reason for participation this
year was my mother always told
me growing up that you should
help anyone you can because one
day you might need help too. If you
help, then if the time comes that
you yourself need help hopefully
someone will help you too.”

Thoughts About Giving
Continued from p. 3
“I believe in helping people less
fortunate. Even though this isn’t the
only time of the year we should give,
its especially important because we
want everyone to be able to enjoy
the holidays.”
Donte Anderson (X31)
“My participation in the food drive
this year really inspired me to help
because I lost my mother a few
years ago, I have had some serious
health issues, and I feel like God
gave me a second chance at life;
therefore, I wanted to honor my
mother and the second chance at
life that I received by doing as much
as I could. I want to make sure that
some needy kids and adults have
something to eat if they need it.”
Claudia Hughes (X15)

“A young apprentice told me when
I asked why he was participating in
this year’s food drive, ‘Hey everyone
needs to be able to eat. They have
to have food, so we gotta help them
out.’”
Josh Waters (X15)
“By giving to those less fortunate,
we show that we still love them and
care about them. It’s especially
important around the holidays.”
