This move officially completed the dry dock portion of the carrier’s mid-life refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH). At OB1, CVN 72 will undergo final outfitting and testing. “The end of the dry dock portion of the RCOH marks a significant milestone in the life of an aircraft carrier,” said Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs. “With Lincoln in the water, shipbuilders and sailors can focus on the final restoration, outfitting and testing of the ship’s systems. This Year’s Campaign Ends Nov. 14 Moving her to the outfitting berth marks the point when the crew move aboard process begins and we bring the ship back to life.” During the dry dock phase of the RCOH, Lincoln underwent extensive repair and construction work both inside and out to revamp the ship. Inside, shipbuilders re-preserved hundreds of tanks and replaced thousands of valves, pumps and piping components. On the outside, they painted the ship’s hull, updated the propeller shafts and installed refurbished propellers. For these last 24 months before CVN 72’s re-delivery, shipbuilders will finish up the overhaul and installation of the ship’s major Veterans Day is Nov. 11. Read a Q&A from NNS Veteran. ... These final months will also be dedicated to modernizing the ship’s living quarters and making them habitable for the sailors as they move aboard. The first group of sailors began moving into the living spaces on Oct. 23. Watch a video of Lincoln moving out of the Dry Dock 11 to OB1, where the carriers’ RCOH will be completed. The crew works on VCS ballast tanks and plays a major role in the completion of the electrical installations inside the tanks. “This crew takes safety very seriously,” said Foreman Rodney Huffman. “They are quick to question things that don’t appear safe and they come to me with any safety concerns they have regarding their work environment.” The crew has been accident-free for more than 760 days. “We stretch each morning to loosen up our muscles before beginning work, and also hold discussions on how we can continue to remain safe,” said Welder Elston Copeland (X31). Deck Electrician Jay Blunt Jr. (X31) believes that looking out for each other has also been key to the crew’s success. “We care about each other and each other’s wellbeing,” he said. “If we see something unsafe, we report it. We don’t want anyone to get hurt from something that Front row (L to R): Demetri Barnes, Jamar Jenkins, Jay Blunt, Elston Copeland, Foreman Rodeny Huffman, Duane Sims and Carroll Goodwyn. As a crew, we will continue to remain safe each day and return home to our families the same way we came into work.” Q&A with NNS Veteran Veterans Day is Tuesday, Nov. 11. Read the question and answer session below featuring Master Shipbuilder and Army Veteran Robert Blount (X31). What is your job at NNS? I’m an X31 foreman working on USS Abraham Lincoln’s (CVN 72) refueling and complex overhaul. I’ve worked at NNS for 47 years. When did you join the Army? I was drafted in 1968. What were your job responsibilities in the Army? I was in field artillery, guarding missiles and performing maintenance on them. What was the most exciting place you traveled? I was stationed in Athens, Greece for 13 months. While I was there, I had a chance to travel around and do a lot of sight-seeing. One of my favorite things about Greece was the food and the different ways it was prepared. Recall one of your fondest memories while you served. It was exciting to be a young man from North Carolina from a small town. When I left home, it taught me to grow up fast or be left behind. Integration had not fully taken place in schools yet, so it introduced me to it fully and taught me that we all need each other in order to survive. Why do you think it’s important to recognize Veterans? It’s important to recognize the men and women who have been away from their families to fight for our freedom. When I was in the service, vets didn’t get the recognition they deserved. When I came home, it seemed like my family was the only ones who were glad to have me home. This form of attempting to get sensitive information may be electronic communications (email) and may also include unsolicited phone calls. Keel Laying Ceremony Due to recent phone scams and harassment calls that some shipbuilders have reported receiving at their homes, NNS would like to remind its employees to never give out personal information to anyone – at work or at home. According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, government agencies will NEVER contact citizens by phone, email or text, to ask you to provide personal information. Watch a 60-second public service announcement video published by the Department of the Treasury warning citizens about these types of calls. On Saturday, Nov. 22, Newport News Shipbuilding will lay the keel for the 14th Virginia-class submarine, Washington (SSN 787). Ship’s Sponsor Elisabeth Mabus, daughter of Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, will have her initials welded onto a metal plate during the ceremony, in keeping with U.S. Navy tradition. Though construction began in 2011, the keel laying marks the first official construction milestone for the submarine. Attendance to the event will be limited to a small number of guests, however, a live webcast of the ceremony will be available beginning at 4 p.m. at www.huntingtoningalls.com/ssn787. HII HOSTS U.S. NUCLEAR INFRASTRUCTURE COUNCIL AT NNS Huntington Ingalls Industries showcased its nuclear capabilities to a U.S. Nuclear Infrastructure Council delegation during a tour of Newport News Shipbuilding on Nov. 6. HII is a member of the NIC, a Washington, D.C.-based business consortium that advocates for new nuclear energy initiatives in the United States and engagement of the American supply chain globally. NNS Vice President of Energy Programs Pete Diakun led the shipyard tour, which included stops at Newport News’ steel production facility and foundry and a submarine construction facility. The group also learned about the shipyard’s modeling and simulation, supply chain management, and nuclear energy efforts. Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com for more information.
