Is best to walk if distance short. Or Rent a car but parking can be a problem at times
and cause a walk of several blocks. Buses are problematic and not very frequent. DOT

If several people carpool you can get around better and at least expense. If renting a car
there is free and metered parking in many areas 25¢ for 15 minutes most say limit is
two hours. Don't know if enforced, probably not. Arrival at Train station is on
Woodward Ave. One mile south on Woodward to WSU then east to Ghafari Hall. Or
almost 4,000 feet to the International Institute. Woodward Bus to Kirby for International
Institute (within 300 feet to east) or exit bus at Kirby and walk across campus 1300 feet
west to Ghafari Hall. First check in advance to see if me or others can give you a ride. I
live 10 miles away.
Woodward is dividing line between East and West

PARKING can be a nightmare Good News choices are in general order of cost
For attendees at International Institute sometimes guests can park free in their small lot next to their
building but once that lot is full the next best choice is on the side streets which are either free or
metered. There are lots of free spaces within 3 short blocks.
Parking meters spaces are numerous. Parking is 25¢ for 15 minutes alleged limit is two hours (I do not
know if this is enforced) and you may have to buy a card at one of several roadside kiosks in area to
pay. Parking is free from 10PM until 7AM but run out and pay otherwise it is a $45 ticket. One
resident told me the meter maid was the only functioning part of the Detroit Police department.
Parking is free Sundays at all meters on all public streets. There are two handicapped parking
spaces across from International Institute which appear to be free as there is no meter.
Here is a parking price finder http://detroit.bestparking.com/
The Red no parking symbol means not open 8-10 Saturday and Sunday
Detroit Public Library sometimes offers free parking for patrons on Saturday. Entrance is on
South side of the Big Detroit Public library. Putnam, between Cass Ave. and Woodward Ave. You have
to go into the library and sign in. You have to exit and sign out before library closes. Saturday 10 a.m.
- 6 p.m. They don't check your whereabouts in between. Only 2 blocks from the International Institute.
You can park at Wayne State University lots FOR $7-10 PER DAY but have to pay that price each
time you enter with a car, except by special permit.

Greenfield Village provides a step back in history through seven historic districts, including the
Railroad Junction, Working Farms, Edison at Work, Porches and Parlors, Liberty Craftworks, Main
Street and Henry Ford’s Model T. Costumed players and artisans help bring the period alive through
demonstrations of period crafts, sports and trades. There are also several opportunities to experience
1800s-era shopping and dining. horse-drawn carriage, vintage-car and steam-locomotive rides. A
historic carousel is also available. You can also eat at restaurants that recreate the dishes of the era.
Special events keep the experience fresh and exciting, such as Thomas the Tank Engine and Civil War
exhibits. Others events delve into other time periods, such as the Ragtime Street Fair and Old Car
Festival.
Come June, a baseball itinerary is available on weekends. Park of the fun includes playing town ball in
the Village Green. You can then move on to find a place on the grass and watch an1880s-style baseball
game at Walnut Grove Field. One of the Teams, Lah-De-Dahs, was created in homage to the 1880s
team of the same name from Waterford, Michigan. Picnic lunches are available. There are several
places to eat. From hot dog stands to a fancy Restaurant.
The Henry Ford Museum
Contains a collection of artifacts that demonstrate American ingenuity, whether they be every-day
household items used by innovators or the products they invented. While the museum’s collection is
mostly about cars and vehicles, it’s also about the evolution of America, from air planes to house-hold
appliances. The collection is most like the Smithsonian History Museum in terms of type, but the actual
museum is actually a big, hangar-type hall with 40-foot ceilings. It is a single level, covers over nine
acres and has more of a funky feel than an academic one. Its exhibits are mostly static, but there is
usually at least one traveling exhibit, like the James Bond exhibition and Chocolate. Claims to Fame:
There is no greater depository of historic cars. Because the Henry Ford Museum is about the man’s
collection, not the car company’s, every conceivable make and model is on display –- not just form the
Ford Motor Company. Exhibits also include mobile homes and bikes. The Dymaxion House was
designed by R. Buckminster Fuller and is a 1946 version of the house of the future. Even today, it
contains some awe-inspiring innovation. The round house is made out of airplane fuselage and
constructed a lot like an umbrella. A tour guide provides some much needed history and unveiling of
hidden nooks and crannies. The Heroes of the Sky exhibit covers the early history of aviation. With
Liberty and Justice for All is an exhibit that chronicles the history of freedom in the United States.
Made in America is an exhibit that showcases American innovation, including the gothic steam engine.
Your Place in Time, 20th Century America is an interesting walk through the eras of the 20th century,
showcasing the products that defined each. Included is a 1930s living room, complete with a broadcast
of Orson Well’s radio program of The War of the Worlds. You may even recognize the first Panasonic
VCR, a Simon electronic game and a Pet Rock. The limousine Kennedy rode in when he was shot A

Michigan Café: A themed cafeteria that offers a vast variety of
regional cuisine, including dishes that utilize Michigan cherries, Sander’s Hot-Fudge Cream Puff and
Guernsey Ice Cream. Obviously the theme is Michigan. You can’t miss it; a huge mural of the state
decorates the lobby leading into the restaurant. The cafeteria offers hot meals and a deli. Unlike many
such cafeterias, there are no pre-made burger bins. The dining room is attractive with large windows
over looking the museum grounds. Also Wienermobile Café: A small, fast-food type cafeteria in the
corner of the hall near the entrance.
Also at the Henry Ford is a tour of The famous Rouge plant. $16.
