The Friends of the Eastchester
Public Library is a volunteer
organization which raises funds
for the library. These funds are
used for many purposes,
including our summer children's
programs, and our popular
Museum Pass program.
Our newsletter is designed to
highlight exciting happenings
here at the library. For a complete list of programs

Our April Hours
Book Sale: Support the Friends
It's time for spring cleaning, which means that it is time for the Friends
of the Eastchester Public Library's annual book sale. Collection
begins on Wednesday, April 15th. Please do not bring textbooks,
encyclopedia, or musty, dusty basement books. Members of the Friends can attend a special preview day on
Thursday, April 23rd from 6:30 ­ 8:30 p.m., where they get "first crack"
at this year's offerings. (Memberships in the Friends of the Library
start at $15 per year and can be purchased at the Circulation Desk).
For the general public, the sale will be open on Friday, April 24th and

All proceeds from the Friends' book sale benefit the library!
National Library Week Fundraising Raffle:
The Friends of the Library are having a raffle during National Library
Week (April 12th to 18th.)
The raffle is a fundraiser, with all proceeds benefiting the library. Each
chance is just $1! Tickets are available in the Friends of the Library
bookstore, which is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 12 ­ 3 and
Saturdays from 1 ­ 4, as well as at the Circulation Desk, beginning
April 13th. The baskets will be on display at the circulation desk. Recent Contributions: iPads and Reference Desks
In addition to two new reference desks, the Friends have purchased
two new iPads, one for children and one for teens. The Children's
Room iPad is loaded with educational games, such as "50 States with
Flat Stanley," while the Teen iPad can be used for homework or to
play games, including the ever­popular Minecraft. To access the
Teen iPad, stop by the Reference Desk.
Spring Craft Programs for Children
On Tuesday, March 31st at 3 p.m., join us to
make a caterpillar craft to celebrate the arrival
of spring! This program is "drop­in,"
meaning no registration is required. It will
take place upstairs, in the Children's Room,
and is for Grades K ­ 5.
For the Preschool crowd (ages 3 and 4), Ms. Patty will offer her
Spring craft program on Tuesday, April 14th at 2:30 p.m. The children
will be making a craft of a bird's nest. Due to the strong demand that
we envision for this program, it is limited to Eastchester and Tuckahoe
library card holders. Online pre­registration will begin on Tuesday,
April 7th at 9 a.m.
AARP Smart Driver Course at EPL
Registration is now open for the AARP
Smart Driver Course to be held at EPL on
Saturday, May 2nd from 9:15 ­ 4. Looking to
save some money on your insurance? Did
you get a ticket that includes points on your
license? The AARP class cost $20 for AARP members and $25 for
non members. .
NEW this summer, the library will host weekday Smart Driver classes
on Mondays, June 1st and July 20th. Visit the Reference Desk for
more information.

Sukey Molloy will give a
children's music concert, for
birth to age 6 with caregiver, on

Robert the Guitar Guy will be
returning to the library on
Saturday, April 11th at 11 a.m.,
for an all­ages children's music
concert.

Mad About Math
Our next Mad About Math
program for Grades K ­ 1 will
take place on Monday, May
11th at 6 p.m., with online pre­
registration beginning one week
prior.
Last year, a team of seven 4th graders and three 6th graders competed in the Children's bracket of the first­ever
Westchester Battle of the Books. This year, we will have two teams: a
Children's team, for those who will be in Grades 4 ­ 6 in the 2015 ­ 16
school year (current 3rd, 4th and 5th graders), and a Teens team, for
those who will be in Grades 6 ­ 9
(current 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders).
The big event will be on Saturday,
October 17th, and we will hold regular
practices from May to October.
The books have been chosen. The
Children's team will be reading Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea;
Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis; Cracker: The Best Dog
in Vietnam by Cynthia Kadohata; Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's
Library by Chris Grabenstein; and Gregor the Overlander by
Suzanne Collins.
The Teens team will be reading Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by
Lish McBride; How they Croak ed: The Awful Ends of the Awfully
Famous by Georgia Bragg; Legend by Marie Lu; Mrs.
Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs;
and Ok ay for Now by Gary Schmidt.
There will be a general interest meeting for those entering
Grades 4 ­ 9 (currently in Grades 3 ­ 8), and their parents, on
Monday, April 6th at 6 p.m. Battle of the Books is open to all,
regardless of residency; however, you must choose one library's
team to be a part of. (i.e., you cannot practice with both the
Eastchester and Bronxville teams!) Please also note that all
participants will be required to sign a photo release form covering
the day of the event.
Book Clubs for Grades 2 ­ 8
On Wednesday, April 29th at 7 p.m., the 2nd
and 3rd Grade Reading Buddies will discuss
Kevin Henkes' The Year of Billy Miller.
This is the award­winning, humorous tale of
a second­grader who learns to appreciate his
younger sister and be a more responsible
member of the family.
On Monday, May 4th at 7 p.m., the 4th &
5th Grade Reading Buddies will
discuss Laura Amy Schlitz's Splendors &
Glooms. In this award­winning Victorian Gothic thriller, a girl named
Clara who has everything vanishes at her birthday party. The
puppeteer Grisini and his orphaned assistants Lizzie and Parse are
suspected. As they uncover Grisini's dark past, they flee London and
fall into a trap set by a witch with a deadly inheritance to shred.
On Thursday, April 30th at 4 p.m., the Tween/Teen Book Club for
Grades 6 ­ 8 will discuss Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. In
this sci­fi work, Miranda's disbelief turns to fear in a split second
when a meteor knocks the moon closer to the earth. How should her
family prepare for the future, when worldwide tsunamis wipe out the

It is almost baseball season, and on
Wednesday, April 8th at 6 p.m., we will have
a special read­a­loud program for Ages 4 ­ 9.
We will read two stories of baseball legends,
The Streak: How Joe DiMaggio Became
America's Hero by Barb Rosenstock, and
Mighty Jackie: The Strikeout Queen by
Marissa Moss. The reading will be followed by a baseball
trivia game with prizes. Peanuts and cracker
jacks will be served.
Online pre­registration is required, and will
begin on Wednesday, April 1st at 9 a.m.
