Pentecost is one of the three chief festivals of the church.
We celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples and the
birth of the Church of Jesus Christ!

Volume 16, Issue 5
Congregation President Carla Middlen has called for a special
congregational meeting to be held on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at
Noon.
The specific purpose of the meeting will be two-fold:
1.
To act on the unanimous recommendation of the Call Committee to extend a Letter of Call
to Joshua Cole Johnson to be Associate Pastor at East Side Lutheran Church.
2.
To act on the recommendation(s) of the Roof Task Force and to authorize a fund appeal to
replace the roof. As this newsletter goes to print the Roof Task Force has not completed its
work but it is hoped that the work will be completed in order to be acted upon by the
congregation.
The congregation will vote on both issues before them at the meeting. Voting will be done by
paper ballot. Updates on the Roof Task Force’s work will be made available in the Sunday
announcement sheet.
A Word of Commendation!
I want to express my thanks and admiration to our Call Committee and to all the members of the Congregation who were
present to meet and greet Joshua Johnson during his “whirlwind visit” to East Side.
The Call Committee met extensively with Joshua and interviewed him in a forthright manner consistent with the
expectations we have for our new Pastor. All the groups that met with Joshua Sunday impressed him and, I think, all were
impressed by him.
Above all, the hospitality and welcome shown to him was inspiring. Truth is, that same hospitality is regularly shown to
all who visit East Side, though obviously not to the extent it was shown to Joshua.
This is an exciting time for all of us. Please be faithful in prayer as we meet on May 31st. Please keep Joshua in your
prayers as he completes the final weeks of his seminary education. God bless you.

Book Lover Notes from the Library
Here are several more new books to tempt you:
Claire Adams, a wealthy artist, specializing in mosaics, feels the Lord is calling her to give away all of her
wealth and follow wherever He leads. She sells all she has, and gives it away. Then she takes a bus into rural
Kansas where she feels the need to stop in the small town of Steadfast. Homeless while there, she survives by
sleeping in the town library. The cast of characters expands with the addition of Merry, the town’s widowed
librarian and Sim, a runaway teenage orphan. Each of them are seeking a place to belong. How will God
resolve the tangled web of their lives? Nancy Moser spins this intriguing tale in A Steadfast Surrender.
Beverly and David Lewis blend their writing talents in Child of Mine. It begins with two story lines. One
line concerns Kelly Maines whose baby girl was kidnapped eight years ago. Since the kidnapping, Kelly has
devoted her life to searching for her child. The other story line concerns Jeff Livingston , who lives with his
niece, Natalie, and her Amish nanny, Laura. Jeff has been raising Natalie, after her adopted parents (Jeff’s
brother Danny and his wife) were killed in an accident. Natalie adores her uncle, her aunt San, and her nanny,
but has a strong desire to find a mother. As you would guess, they become linked, but are they the right for
each other?
Clara Endicott is a idealistic journalist, determined to fight for downtrodden workers. Daniel Tremain has
overcome his impoverished childhood to become a wealthy industrialist. They had been very close childhood
friends, linked by their passion for music. Circumstances and geography had separated them for twelve years.
Now they are reunited, but find themselves divided by different viewpoints. Elizabeth Camden sets her novel,
The Lady of Bolton Hill , during the period of rising industrialism following the Civil War.
I had chiefly been familiar with Lauraine Snelling as the author of books featuring Norwegian pioneers in
upper Midwest . I found myself enthrall by her book One Perfect Day that deals with contemporary time and
issues. It is the story of two mothers: Nora Peterson, the mother of twins (boy and girl) living in Minnesota;
and Jenna Montgomery, the widowed mother of one daughter living in Nebraska. The story begins shortly
before Christmas. Nora is striving to make this Christmas perfect
for her children, Christi and Charlie, who will leave for college next
fall. Jenna, a nurse, is viewing Christmas with trepidation. Her
daughter, Heather, is on the list for a heart transplant. She fears this
may be her last Christmas. As you might anticipate, the irony is that
what would make a perfect day for one mom would be
heartbreaking for the other. They are both Christians facing
challenges to their faith. Nora will face the challenges of
reconciling with God and living with loss. Jenna will face the
challenge of releasing her daughter to God’s care and trusting for a
future beyond the immediate.

A Little Humor for Pentecost (this year, May 24 )!
th
The European Union commissioners have announce that agreement has been reached to adopt English as
the preferred language for European communications, rather that German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British government conceded that English spelling had some room for
improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for
short).
In the first year, “s” will be used instead of the soft “c”. Sertainly, sivil servants will reseive this news with
joy. Also, the hard “c” will be replaced with “k”. Not only will this klear up confusion, but typewriters kan
have one less letter.
There will be growing pulik enthusiasm in the second year, when the troublesome “ph” will be replaced by
“f”. This will make words like “fotograf” 20 persent shorter.
In the third year, public akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expected to reach the stage where more
komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have
always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al will agree that the horrible mes of silent “e’s” in the
language is disgrasful, and they would go.
By the fourth year, people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing “th” by “z” and “w” by “v”. During ze
fifz year, ze unesesary “o” kan be dropd from vords containing “ou”, and similar changes vud, of kors, be
aplid to ozer combinations of leters.
Und efter zu fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German lik zey vunted in ze forst plas!

Marty’s Mug of Sioux Falls to Host “Beer & Hymns” Event
Attracting persons of all ages, Marty’s Mug of Sioux Falls plans to host its annual
“Beer & Hymns” event on April 30th at 6:30 PM at the Market in Downtown Sioux Falls.
Starting in 2013 and growing in size year after year, Beer & Hymns (and it’s counterpart
event – “Beer & Carols”) started out as a replica of what Martin Luther did centuries ago
by bringing the Church into the pub to spread the Gospel message because, just as
worship can happen in a church sanctuary, worship can just as easily (if not more) happen in a pub.
Beer & Hymns is an event for all ages and all are welcome to join in on singing your favorite gospels,
spirituals, and traditional hymns accompanied by a full piece folk and bluegrass band.
Marty’s Mug of Sioux Falls started Beer & Hymns as one of its regular events to bring people together in
community through music. Marty’s Mug is a ministry of the South Dakota Synod of the ELCA and was
organized in 2010 as a way to bring young adults together in a casual setting to reconnect in fellowship and
conversation. Marty’s Mug meets regularly for roundtable conversations and other events throughout the
year.
For more information on Marty’s Mug, get connected at facebook.com/MartysMugSF, text MMSF to 59769, or

WELCA News from President Janet Wilcox – April, 2015
WELCA’s Spring Luncheon was Saturday, April 18, 2015. We had about 128 attending, which
is the best turn out we’ve ever had. Thanks to all who came. We also give thanks to 8
wonderful guys helping in the kitchen. I’m not alone in thinking the large turn out was because
of the wonderful entertainment we received from Glenyta and Glenyta’s Guys. A huge thank to
Glenyta for recruiting and directing your Guys and for their wonderful singing.
The dishwasher and the ovens in the kitchen have been repaired. A reminder to anyone using
the ovens: Let them warm up for 15 minutes before trying to use them and clean-up any mess
made in the ovens or on stoves after using. (Also, clean-up the microwave after using
it.) While I’m at it; the carts should be cleaned off after use and the tables too.
WELCA will be serving the breakfast for High School graduates and their families on May
3rd. All the Sunday School teachers will be thanked and served breakfast also on the same
morning. The food will be catered.
The nominating committee for WELCA officers will be searching for ladies to fill some
positions for next year. We need a Vice President who will be willing to be President after the
new sitting president leaves. We need a Secretary of Publicity, which has been held by Barbara
Anderson for many years. WELCA does much to serve people and we have to have good
leadership to accomplish those services. Please prayerfully consider becoming a WELCA
officer and contact Donna Murphy, Marcia Roynesdal, or any WELCA officer to offer. (If you
don’t offer, you may be getting a phone call.)
Please plan to attend the Mother-Daughter Banquet on Friday May 8th, 2015.
The tickets will cost $10 for adults, $5 for children age 5 – 12. Children under 5 yrs. will be
free. Carole Riswold will be in charge of selling tickets and preparing the seating chart. Tickets
will be sold on Sunday April 26th & May 3rd in the Narthex before and after worship services.
You can call Carol and reserve tickets at 371-0052. The church office will not be selling tickets
so you’ll have to call Carol.
Also on April 26th and May 3rd, there will be sign-up sheets in the Narthex requesting help
from the wonderful men who will serve us and clean-up after us and do dishes for us. If you
know any men who don’t read this article, please remind and encourage them to sign-up.
The menu will be: Parmesan Crusted Chicken Breast, Twice-baked Potatoes, Cole slaw, Corn,
Beans, Buns & Butter and Ice Cream & wafer.
Our entertainment for the evening will be: Soul Mates, a singing group from Freeman. They’re
wonderful.
