Newsletter Week 28 24th April 2015 Message from SLT This has, once again, been an incredibly busy week with some wonderful events going on—please read all the details below. The Nursery pupils excelled themselves with their outstanding behaviour and presentation skills during their assembly practice yesterday. It should be a fantastic assembly next week. Year 6 pupils underwent practice SATs this week and were all very mature about the experience. The real SATs for Year 6 start on 11th May when we will be providing them with breakfast. Our next coffee morning will be on Thursday 30th April. Please join us to share your views on how we can improve our school. The website is constantly updated (hopefully with Year 2 chick developments soon) so please visit it regularly to see what’s happening. Year 4 News In year 4 this week we have been learning about moral dilemmas. The children learnt that in stories with dilemmas, the main character often has a decision or choice to make. We began by reading the story Tunnel, by Anthony Brown. The children really related to this story in particular, as it about a brother and sister who are always arguing. We then began reading a story called The Balaclava Story, by George Layton, which is about a boy who really wanted a balaclava so he could join the balaclava boys in his school, but his mum would not buy him one. After a messy handicraft lesson, the opportune moment appeared, as the boy walked into the cloakroom he noticed a balaclava lying on the floor. What should he do? Should he take the balaclava as he really wanted one? How would the owner of the balaclava feel if the boy stole it? The children have loved planning and writing their own endings to the story, thinking about which choice is moral and what the actions of the other characters would be depending on the choice that he makes. Reception News This week in reception we have been celebrating Multi-Cultural week. We have been learning about India. We have had fun making flags, trying on Indian clothes and looked at the food they have. In literacy we have read the story ‘Kipper’s Toybox’. We have been learning about story structure, focusing on beginning, middle and end. We planned our own story, using what we have learnt. In mathematics we learnt about 3D shapes. We focused on fun problem solving games to use our knowledge of shapes. We are now able to name each 3D shape and name their properties. St. George’s Day On Thursday 23rd April, it was St. George’s day. The whole school got involved to celebrate the day. Each key stage got the chance to make a human England flag. We had lots of fun holding up pieces of red and white paper to represent the flag. East Tilbury would like to welcome the arrival of eight healthy chicks. There are two more on their way and they are working really hard to push themselves out of the egg. Names are being chosen this week! Ruby has been writing about the chicks that hatched in Mrs Morgan's classroom yesterday. Everyone is so excited! The award recognises the school’s excellence and dedication to PE and School Sport throughout the year. East Tilbury and Deneholm Primary were the only two schools in Thurrock to receive this award. Year 2 pupils, Holly and Rosie attended the awards ceremony with Miss Taylor on Monday 20th April. Both girls gave a speech during the ceremony on what they enjoy and have achieved in PE and sport throughout the past year of being at East Tilbury Primary School. The girls said "We enjoy our PE lessons, especially basketball and gymnastics and we take part in two hours of PE every week; we also take part in inter-house competitions in school. We represent our school in Thurrock SSP competitions throughout the year and are both recognised as being gifted and talented in gymnastics.
