Cumberland Public Library
'Tis the season....for over due library books. They have
to be somewhere...in your locker, your book bag or at
home. This is important for the Grade 8's especially as
that overdue library book will follow you up the hill to
ARHS..
WOW Reading Challenge results: E.B. Chandler school
library received notice that, while we did not place, EBC
received an Honorary Mention for all the hard work that
went into the Challenge. E.B. Chandler students and
staff read a total of 21, 507 pages!! Awesome job!! A
special shout out to Mrs. Wright's students, EA staff and
Mrs. Meekins for their reading and recording of pages
read!! Awesome Job!!

EB Chandler students are having a battery drive for “Zinc Saves
Lives”. We are accepting any used batteries to help decrease
electronic waste and fight zinc deficiency. By properly recycling
batteries you are helping to keep harmful waste out of landfills
and allowing the precious zinc inside to be recovered and reused. Just one AA battery has enough zinc in it to save the lives
of six children. Any used batteries can be dropped off at EBC
until May 31st. Our current count is 2624 batteries,
that's 15,744 lives!

contest is on May 14 through
the University of Waterloo. A
couple of seats are remaining.

which included our very own
grade 8 students Joshua Lohnes,
Terra Carter, Allie Degenstein and
Daphne Fawthrop as well as grade
7 student Logan Pipes.

PowerSchool Changes
On May 4, 2015 all CCRSB student PowerSchool usernames and passwords have changed. Student PowerSchool usernames have been
changed to match their NSPES (Nova Scotia Public Education System)
username. The NSPES is aligned with many other networks accounts
such as Moodle, OurCloud and Google Apps for Education. Now that
students have received their new username and password, students will
be prompted to change their password. The new password rules add
complexity to student passwords.
Student passwords will expire every 365 days and they will be locked
out after 10 invalid attempts. If students get locked out, please report it
to the main office. Student passwords will have the following complexity:
Be a minimum of 8 characters in length
Contain at least 1 upper case letter and 1 lower case letter
Include at least 1 number
Include at least 1 special character
Students who are currently using the PS mobile app must change their
password using a web browser and then update their password on the
mobile app.
Band Celebrations and Information
There has been a lot of celebrating in the EBC band program! Both the grade 7 concert band and grade 8 concert band
attended festivals last week and did amazing jobs! The grade 7 concert band attended the Sackville Music Festival on
April 29. They did a great job and received many positive comments regarding not only their playing ability, but on
their professionalism. It was a great morning!
The grade 8 concert band attended the Atlantic Festival of Music on April 30 in Halifax. They played beautifully and
portrayed professionalism and maturity. The received a gold standard from the adjudicators. I could not be prouder of
this group! All their hard work certainly paid off!
Now that we are all back from festivals, it is now time to focus on the last 2 months. Here are some important dates to
put on your calendars:
Friday, May 8 - Due date for grade 8's to decide if they will continue in band in grade 9 (please return form with
parent/guardian signature)
Wednesday, May 13 - grade 8 band tour (Mrs. Conrad needs drivers to transport gear. Please contact her if you can
help!)
Wednesday, June 3 - EBC Final Concert 7pm (all bands and choir) (Note: This is a date change from our normal day)
Thursday, June 4 - Stage Band Concert at ARHS 7pm (only stage band members)

Three Pigs’ Lives Turned Upside Down When Wolf Allegedly Destroys Homes

Emotions were high as witnesses took to the stand Friday, April 10th, in a trial that has captured the attention of the
citizens of Amherst: The Three Little Pigs vs. the “Big Bad Wolf.”
Alleged victims Abigail, Barbara and Caroline Pig accused Beatrice B. Wolf of breaking and entering their homes,
thus destroying a house of straw and one of sticks. The events occurred the 21st of August, 2014, at 123, 234 and 345
Fig tree Lane.
Court room C at the Amherst Justice Centre was packed with supporters sympathetic of both sides. Tensions were
high, as the wolf and pigs each told their conflicting stories, which left jury members with a difficult decision.
On one side, to believe the pigs, who said that their homes were violently blown over, and their lives threatened. All
three pigs admitted to assuming the wolf was up to no good, based on the fact that she had previously threatened their
good friend Henny Penny, a chicken. Caroline admitted to boiling water in her fireplace and inviting the wolf to come
down the chimney, which resulted in the scorching of the wolf’s bottom.
On the other side, Beatrice Wolf claimed she was innocent of all charges, and that she simply asked for some sugar
from her neighbours, to bake a cake for her grandmother’s 50th birthday. She admitted it was her hay fever that had
caused her to sneeze and blow down the houses.
When she arrived at the third pig’s house, she said that Caroline invited her to enter, but through the chimney, where
she burnt herself, and ran out of the house.
Finally, the Honourable Justice MacRury instructed the jury on their responsibility to decide whether or not the BBW
was guilty of all charges. After a short deliberation, they concluded that Beatrice B. Wolf was guilty. The sheriffs
escorted her to the holding sells, where she awaits sentencing.
The students of Mr. Hendra’s Grade 8 ELA class would like to thank Justice MacRury, Thomas MacLaren, Catherine
Hirbour, Joe Potter, the sheriffs and the clerk for welcoming them and for showing them how a court room runs.

Dress Code
Students have been reminded in
homerooms about the EBC dress
code. As the weather warms up
(Thank goodness!) students begin
wearing shorts and sandals.
Shorts have to reach mid-thigh and
no sandals are permitted in wood
shop or gym.
Go online to re-read the dress regulations in the student handbook on
page 5. Remember that we do not
want to see exposed underwear
either. A few students who were
unsure of whether their shorts or
skirts were too short brought a
change of clothes, in case. That
shows maturity and responsibility.
