You have just purchased the finest quality van on the market. This owners manual is designed to ensure that you enjoy your Explorer van as much and as long as possible, and that you protect your investment through proper care. Before driving your van for the first time, take a moment now to read through this owners manual while seated in the van. The time spent familiarizing yourself with its features and operation will greatly enhance your personal safety and enjoyment. Take good care of your Explorer van and it will provide years of service. We have provided a page in the back of this manual for you to record regular maintenance performed on the van. We at Explorer Van Co. appreciate your patronage, and we wish you years of enjoyment. In addition to this owners manual, you will find a “Care Package” with your van. This “Care Package” also contains extra buttons, striping, fuses, component manuals, and a lug nut adapter. Special Note Explorer Van Company makes every effort to provide you, our customer, with the finest product and service possible. Wood parts in Explorer van conversions are hand-crafted in our own plant. Slight color variations can be expected due to natural aging of wood over a period of weeks and months. Replacement parts are also hand-crafted in our plant of the same type and grade of wood used for the parts when it was delivered to you. However, no tree is identical. You may notice a slight color variation in replacement parts, and, of course, replacement will also go through an aging process as well. Page 1 Introduction All information and specifications in this owner’s manual are current at the time of printing. However, due to Explorer Vans continued commitment to product development, we reserve the right to make changes at any time without notice or obligation. If you have any questions about your van after reading through this manual, please contact the dealer from whom you purchased the van. Should you still have questions, you may call the Explorer Van Customer Service Department at 1-800-926-7878. This owners manual explains the equipment available on Explorer conversion vans—some items contained in this manual are optional and may not be installed in your vehicle. A NOTE TO OWNERS OF EXPLORER VANS ABOUT TV RECEPTION... TV SIGNALS WILL NOT BE RECEIVED WHILE THE VAN IS IN MOTION This monitor is basically used for DVD, Blu Ray or Video Games. TV reception while you are parked may be enjoyed depending on location of the broadcasting station, assuming ideal conditions. The Low Top Flip Down monitor is basically for DVD, Blu Ray or Video Games. There is no TV antenna on the market that can eliminate the blockage of the signals while a vehicle is in motion! Happy Traveling! All costs incurred by you for returning the Explorer Van to and from your dealer, another Explorer service center or the Explorer factory will be your responsibility. X. RIGHTS UNDER STATE LAW. Other Legal Rights. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. For example, in addition to the limited warranty provided by Explorer, you may also have an implied warranty that arises under applicable law. Specifically, you may have an implied warranty of merchantability and/or implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose. Limit on Length of Implied Warranty. The implied warranties available to you are limited, to the extent allowed by law, to the time period covered by the Explorer Limited Warranty or to the applicable time period provided by state law, whichever period is shorter. Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you. Business or Commercial Purposes. THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES WILL NOT APPLY TO YOU AT ALL IF YOU USE YOUR VEHICLE FOR BUSINESS OR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES. IN SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES, EXPLORER DISCLAIMS ANY AND ALL EXPRESS WARRANTIES AND ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY AND THE IMPLIED WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. XI. LIMITATIONS ON REMEDIES FOR ALL CLAIMS Incidental and Consequential Damages. In no event will Explorer be responsible for any time or income that you lose, any inconvenience you might be caused, the loss of your transportation or use of your vehicle, cost of rental vehicles, fuels, telephone, travel, meals or lodging, the loss of personal or commercial property, the loss of revenue, or any other incidental on consequential damages you may have. Punitive Damages. Punitive, exemplary, or multiple damages may not be recovered unless applicable law prohibits their disclaimer. Breach of Implied Warranties. If you are entitled to the benefit of any implied warranties, your remedy and Explorer’s liability will be as set forth in Part VIII for a breach of the Explorer Limited Warranty. Page 6 Class Actions. You may not bring any warranty related or other claims against Explorer as a class representative, a private attorney general, a member of a class of claimants or in any other representative capacity. Arbitration. A warranty related or other claim against Explorer must be arbitrated in accordance with Part XIV and not brought in any civil court. All Types of Claims. The limitations set forth in this Section apply to claims for breach of Explorer’s warranty, other breach of warranty claims, claims for negligence and to other claims against Explorer based on any other theory. Effect of State Law. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the limitations or exclusions related to such damages set forth in this Part XI may not apply to you. XII. PRODUCTION CHANGES Explorer reserves the right to make changes in the conversion vans its manufactures or sells at any time. Explorer has no obligation to make the same or similar changes to any van conversion it previously manufactured or sold, and Explorer has no obligation to conform any Explorer Van to the features shown in any Explorer brochure or advertisement. XIII. REPORTING SAFETY DEFECTS TO THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT If you believe that your vehicle has a safety defect, you should inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in addition to notifying Explorer. If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it finds that a safety defect exist in a group of vehicles, it may order a recall or remedy campaign. However, NHTSA cannot become involved in individual problems between you, your dealer, or Explorer. To contact NHTSA, you may either call the Auto Safety Hot-line toll free at 1-800424-9393 (Washington, D.C. residents may call 366-0123) or write to NHTSA, U.S. Department of Transportation, 400 Seventy Street, Washington D.C. 20590. You can obtain other information about motor vehicle safety from the hot line. XIV. ARBITRATION If Explorer is unable to resolve your warranty claim or you have any other claim against Explorer or your dealer that relates to your Explorer Van conversion, you must submit your claim to binding arbitration under the federal Arbitration Act, 9 U.S.C. § 1-14. Arbitration will be administrated by the American Arbitration Association (AAA), pursuant to its Commercial Arbitration Rules, unless and until EXPLORER designates a different administrator, in which event a notice will be mailed to your last known address. To initiate an arbitration proceeding, you must notify EXPLORER of your intent to arbitrate and binding arbitration Page 7 proceedings will be held after you have paid $125 to the American Arbitration Association to be applied to the initial filing fee. If your claim is less than $10,000, EXPLORER will pay the balance of the initial filing fee and any final fee payable to AAA and the arbitrator shall not award damages in excess of $10,000. If your claim exceeds $10,000 or is not specified, you must pay one half of the fees and costs payable to AAA in excess of $125. You, the dealer, and EXPLORER will each pay their own costs and expenses in connection with the arbitration hearing. The claim will be heard by a single arbitrator, and will be held thirty (30) days after the claim is filed, unless all parties agree to a later date. The arbitrator shall be selected from a panel named by AAA, pursuant to its rules. Unless required by law, the arbitrator shall award only actual damages for financial loss, and shall not award damages for personal injury or mental anguish, or other intangible claims. Statutes of limitation, which would apply to a court proceeding for your claim, will apply to commencement of arbitration proceedings. If you file a claim in court, you will be required to pay all fees, cost and expenses, including Explorer’s attorneys’ fees, for dismissal or referral to arbitration. This Agreement will apply to you, your heirs, and assigns, and anyone who purchases or leases your Explorer Van from you or operates or occupies it with your permission or without objection by you. Nothing in this Agreement enlarges your rights or gives you any rights or claims you would not otherwise have. FOR INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO FILE A CLAIM OR ABOUT THE ARBITRATION PROGRAM, CALL EXPLORER AT (574) 267-7666, OR THE AMERICAN ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION AT (800) 778-7879. It contains fuses of various sizes, each designed to protect electronically - powered accessories in the van. They will require replacement should a fault occur within the vans electrical system. GM - 3 Door Overhead Console 15 amp Rear TV 7.5 amp Driver Heated Seat 10 amp Reading Lights Inverter Trigger 15 amp Ford Explorer Installed Mirror 3 amp TV, ACC Power Points 10 amp Passenger Heated Seat 10 amp Sunroof 10 amp GM - 4 Door Fog Lights 15 amp Blu-Ray, Subwoofer, Constant Power Points, Flip-Down TV Power, Rear Radio Memory 5 amp Sofa Switch 7.5 amp Sunroof 10 amp Sofa Breaker is located behind the fuse box breaker and is self resetting. To replace one of these fuses, simply pull the protruding plastic tab directly towards you and replace the burnt fuse with one of the same size. For a wiring schematic, call 1-800-926-7878. Page 10 Overhead Console Sunroof Control The front overhead console in your van will be equipped with a unique arrangement of switches. This arrangement is determined by the options installed in your van. These switches operate items such as indirect lights, cabinet lights, fog lights and the sunroof. Rear Air/Heat Fan Switch Below the console switches you will find the Rear Air/Heat Master Switch. This switch mush be on AUX for the rear switch to operate. If it is not, only the front switch will operate the unit. NOTE: The Sunroof switch is a TOUCH SWITCH. DO NOT HOLD THE BUTTON! To Open: On the first touch the Sunroof will pop up. The sunroof will slide open on the second touch. To Close: The first touch will slide the sunroof forward. Touch the button again and the sunroof will recess back into the frame. The sunroof will automatically close when the key is turned off. Driving Lights Some vans are equipped with optional driving lights, wired into a switch in the overhead console. Note that the laws on the use of driving lights vary from state to state. Check the applicable laws in your state. Page 11 TV Listening (located in ceiling) If your van is equipped with a TV Sound system, you have two ways to listen. You can listen through the speakers or through the cordless headphones, which are on at all times. This switch turns the overhead speakers on and off. Refer to the manuals included with your van for more information on these optional accessories. Center Console Low Top HiTop Blu-Ray player. Page 12 The ignition switch must be in the “on” position before using any of these components. Please note the TV signal will not be received while vehicle is in motion. Vehicle motion and variations in electric current may cause the picture to “roll” or produce a “snowy” effect on the picture. For this reason you may want to consider a DVD, Blu Ray or Satellite System to provide more satisfying TV entertainment. Note: The TV Monitor must be set to operate the DVD on HDMI1 or Satellite System on A/V mode. To operate an optional game setup, the TV Monitor must be set to HDMI2 on TV. Refer to the manuals included with your van for more information on these optional accessories. Low Top Monitor/ DVD Combo Low top vans (that is, vans that are not equipped with an optional high top) can still be equipped with an LCD screen Flip Down Monitor with built-in DVD or Blu Ray player. In such cases, the necessary monitor connections are made between the plate mounted on the back wall behind the fuse block. Explorer uses various manufacturers of LCD Monitors. Sizes may also vary. Please refer to your Monitor owners manual for operating instructions. Page 13 TV in the High Top Van Please refer to the operating instructions supplied in your “Care Package” for the particular electronic component installed in your van. Indirect Lighting Indirect lighting supplies soft, moderate lighting throughout the vans interior. The lights are located in valances, window sills, and optional ceiling slats controlled by a switch in the overhead console. Page 14 Pleated Shades Optional pleated shades are installed on some vans. These are adjusted by sliding the shade up or down as desired. Move this bottom bar up or down as desired. If the rear cargo doors have shades, you should keep these in the fully open position when the vehicle is in motion. Leather Seating The optional leather seating installed in Explorer Vans requires additional care and cleaning. To clean, wipe seat surface with a piece of cheese cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a mild soap (such as Castile or Ivory). Thoroughly rinse the leather with another cloth dampened with clean lukewarm water, and then dry with a soft, dry cloth. Do this often as leather becomes soiled. Applying oil to the finished surface will harm the leather, neither should you use varnish or furniture polish. Page 15 Six-Way Power & Power Recline Front Seats Optional six-way power and or power recline seats are available on Explorer Vans. They are controlled by the switches located on the lower outside section of the seat. The operation of the each switch is described in the diagram below. Outsides of seat. The center knob moves the entire seat up, down, forward, and back. Move the knob in the direction you want to move the seat. This knob will not affect the seat tilt in any direction. Power Recline Switch Press and hold either direction until seat is reclined in desired position. (located on front seats only) Pull this switch up to tilt the front of the seat up. Push this switch down to tilt the front of the seat down. Pull this switch up to tilt the back of the seat up. Push this switch down to tilt the back of the seat down. Familiarize yourself with these controls, so that you can operate seat safely while the vehicle is in motion. If your seat does not move in response to the seat controls above, it is likely that a fuse needs to be checked—see the diagram on page 10. Page 16 Armrests Armrests provide additional comfort while you are seated in your van. Move them as shown in the diagram below. The armrests are moved by simply grasping them at the front and moving them up or down. Power Lumbar Option Located on armrest. Push button to desired comfort. Heated Seat Option Located on armrest. Turn switch on to warm seats. Options available for front seats only, driver or passenger. Do not place excessive weight on the armrest, this will cause damage. Page 17 Reclining Seat Backs All vans are equipped with reclining seats. The following diagram illustrates how they are operated. Optional Heated Seat Switch (Some models have switch on outside of armrest) The seat will recline when the lever at the base of the seat cushion is pulled up. The driver’s seat should be adjusted before the vehicle is in motion. Headrest The headrests are adjusted by moving the latch (illustrated below), grasping the headrest, and moving it to the desired position. The driver’s headrest should not be adjusted while the vehicle is in motion. Move lever before moving the headrest up or down. Page 18 Quick Release Seat Pedestal Seats are equipped with quick release pedestals. To remove the seat, simply push down on tab, pull up on lever and slide around until seat pedestal releases. (Shown in illustration below.) To reinstall align seat on pedestal, push down, pull lever back until lock position. Note: Swivel seats must be in forward position when van is in motion, for proper seatbelt operation. Page 19 Upper and Lower Child Restraint System Your van has a child restraint anchorage system to insure the proper safety of your child. Your middle seats have upper anchorages between the seat bottom and back. Rear anchor for child restraint system located behind sofa. Your lower seat anchorage is at the back of the pedestal plate. Page 20 Rear Storage Compartment Located in the rear of the van on the passenger side, rear compartment contains the vehicle jack (please refer to chassis owners manual for complete instructions). Note: On Ford models the vehicle jack is located under the sofa. Sofa Center Fold Down Section Some rear sofas are designed so that the center section of the back folds down. Grasp the top of center section and fold down. Page 21 Power Sofa This sofa moves from upright position to a fold down position and back by operating the switches located on the passenger rear sidewall behind the sofa. Controls to operate sofa position up or down and fore and aft if equipped. Note: While van is in motion, the sofa should be in full upright position. The sofa must not be in fold down position. The back of the center section forms a tray like area. The sofa may also have optional headrest and armrest. This power sofa should only be operated by an adult. Page 22 Wheels SERVICE BULLETIN Customers purchasing an Explorer Van equipped with cast alloy wheels must be made aware of the lug nut tightening procedure necessary in the immediate break-in period of the van. Lug nuts need to be checked and tightened often the first one hundred (100) miles and once again after an additional two hundred fifty (250) miles. Lug nuts should then be checked every one thousand to fifteen hundred (1,000-1,500) miles. If the wheels are ever removed for service or tire rotation, the initial lug nut tightening procedure must be gone through again. Failure to follow proper lug nut tightening procedures could result in wheel stud failure and possible loss of the wheel. Lug nut adapter provided in Care Package. Optional Upgrade Tires The buyer understands that the original tire manufacturer provides a warranty for any implied defects. Please note that it is normal for the front wheels to accumulate more dust than the rear wheels. This dust is the normal result of wear on the front disc brake pads. Be sure to follow the cleaning directions on page 24. Page 23 Note on Alloy Wheels If your van is equipped with alloy wheels that have a special coating, clean these wheels only with a soft cloth and warm soapy water—never use a wire brush or other objects that might remove the protective coating on the wheel. Never use any cleaners. THE CARE & MAINTENANCE OF PVD COATED WHEELS PDV (Physical Vapor Deposition) coated aluminum wheels are not the same as chrome plated wheels and clean up easily with the use of soap and water. Explorer recommends the use of mild soap (or “car wash” soap) and water with a soft sponge for cleaning on a regular basis. Dry with a soft cloth. AVOID spraying cold water on extremely hot wheels. Always allow wheels to cool before cleaning. DO NOT USE abrasive wheel cleaners or acid based chrome wheel cleaners intended for use on chrome plated wheels. DO NOT USE steel wool or stiff bristle brushes on the finish. If a scratch does appear, we recommend the use of Meguiar’s Scratch X 2.0 for the removal of mild scratches. Follow manufacturer’s instruction on product bottle. Running Board Capacity The running board capacity for high top and low top vans is 300 lbs.
