Name: Watch the video: States of matter http://goo.gl/wNIjtk MATTER Matter is everything around us that has mass and takes up space. Atoms and molecules are all composed of matter . Matter exists in 3 states or forms: Solid, liquid and gas. Watch the video: States of matter http://goo.gl/AWU8YR Did you know: Generally, solids are more dense than liquids because their molecules are closer together. The freezing process compacts the molecules into a smaller space. SOLIDS These are the properties, or characteristics, of a solid: • They have a fixed shape (It’s shape cannot easily be changed) • It does not take the shape of the container it is in • It does not fill a container • Atoms in a solid do not move around too much. They are compact and close together © e-classroom 2015 www.e-classroom.co.za GRADE 4 Grade 4 Natural Science Term 2: Matter and materials; materials around us; Solids liquids gases Materials around us: Solids, liquids and gases GRADE 4 Paste OR draw 4 pictures, showing examples of solid objects: Did you know: Water has more space between its molecules when it is frozen. Because the same number of molecules take up more space, solid water is less dense than liquid water. LIQUIDS Here are the properties of liquids: • Does not have a fixed shape • Takes the shape of the container it is in • Difficult to compress because the molecules are close together • Liquids “flow” • Atoms are spread out a little more than solids Activity 2: Paste OR draw 4 pictures showing examples of liquids: © e-classroom 2015 www.e-classroom.co.za Grade 4 Natural Science Term 2 : Matter and materials; materials around us; Solids liquids gases Activity 1: GRADE 4 Grade 4 Natural Science Term 2: Matter and materials; materials around us; Solids liquids gases GASES These are the properties of gases. • Gases are everywhere • Do not have any particular shape • Take the shape of the container they are in • The molecules spread out to fill the whole space evenly • Molecules are spread out more freely Activity 3: Paste OR draw 4 pictures showing examples of gases: Revision Activity Quick questions 1) What is matter? ________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ 2) Give a synonym (another word) for the term “properties”. ______________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Practical activity Your teacher will provide a variety of objects, such as these: stone, wood, can of deodorant, air in a balloon, milk, water, oil, plastic cup, cooking gas in a cylinder. Look at each of the items and use these questions to decide if the object is a SOLID, a LIQUID or a GAS. • Has it got a fixed shape or, can its shape change easily? • Does it take the shape of the container it is in? • Does it fill the container? © e-classroom 2015 www.e-classroom.co.za MATERIAL EG: Stone 1) Wood 2) Can of deodorant 3) Air in balloon 4) Milk 5) Water 6) Oil 7) Plastic cup GRADE 4 SOLID, LIQUID, GAS Solid EXPLAIN WHY YOU THINK SO.... It is hard, has a fixed shape, doesn’t take the shape of the container, doesn’t fill the container. 8) Cooking gas in cylinder © e-classroom 2015 www.e-classroom.co.za Grade 4 Natural Science Term 2 : Matter and materials; materials around us; Solids liquids gases Complete the table: Activity 1: Paste OR draw 4 pictures, in the space below, of examples of solid objects. These may include a variety of solid items including items made of rock or stone, wood, glass, plastic and metal. Examples: plastic chair, glass cup, rock, wooden desk, etc. Activity 2: Paste OR draw 4 pictures showing examples of liquids. These may include items such as milk, juice, water, oil, dishwashing soap, etc. Activity 3: Paste OR draw 4 pictures showing examples of gases. Examples may include air in a balloon, oxygen, carbon dioxide, cooking gas in a cylinder, nitrogen, methane, etc. Revision Activity Quick questions 3) What is matter? Matter is what makes up everything that we see around us. 4) Give a synonym (another word) for the term “properties”. Characteristics / traits / qualities / features Practical activity Your teacher will provide a variety of objects, such as these: stone, wood, can of deodorant, air in a balloon, milk, water, oil, plastic cup, cooking gas in a cylinder. It is hard, has a fixed shape, doesn’t take the shape of the container, doesn’t fill the container. It is hard, has a fixed shape, doesn’t take the shape of the container, doesn’t fill the container. Takes the shape of the container, fills the container, can’t see it. EG: Stone Solid 1) Wood Solid 2) Can of deodorant Gas (when sprayed) 3) Air in balloon Gas Takes the shape of the container, fills the container, can’t see it. 4) Milk Liquid Doesn’t have a fixed shape, takes the shape of the container, doesn’t necessarily fill the container. 5) Water Liquid Doesn’t have a fixed shape, takes the shapeof the container, doesn’t necessarily fill the container. 6) Oil Liquid Doesn’t have a fixed shape, takes the shapeof the container, doesn’t necessarily fill the container. 7) Plastic cup Solid It is hard, has a fixed shape, doesn’t take the shape of the container, doesn’t fill the container. 8) Cooking gas in cylinder Gas Takes the shape of the container, fills the container, can’t see it. © e-classroom 2015 www.e-classroom.co.za Grade 4 Natural Science Term 2 : Matter and materials; materials around us; Solids liquids gases Complete the table:
