Lawrence, Kansas Smyrna, Delaware Bill Wolters Texas Automobile Dealers Association Austin, Texas the chairman’s message The Ambassadors ... and those of Distinction The year 2011 will always be remembered in the history of the Foundation for a major accomplishment: the year that Dale Willey, chairman of the Ambassadors Program, and his committee members exceeded our initial goal of 500 Ambassadors. Now we are well on the way to the next goal of 1,000! Reaching this goal highlights a significant fact. In the not-too-distant future, Ambassador grants to charities by new-car and -truck dealers, their associations and friends will exceed $500,000 annually. Turn to pages 4–7 of this annual report and you’ll see why we believe this. Another exciting milestone is the development of the Ambassador of Distinction category. An individual or family achieves that status once three Ambassadors are named. Presently we have 26 Ambassadors of Distinction. Some have exceeded the basic three: DCH Auto Group; Gary Reynolds Family of Connecticut; H. Carter Myers, III, Family of Virginia; Wade Walker Family of Vermont; Ted Russell Family of Tennessee; Raymond Ciccolo Family in Massachusetts; Ray Green Family in Illinois; Kull Family in New Jersey; Mungenast Family in Missouri; and W. Carroll Smith, II, in Texas. As one Ambassador of Distinction put it, “... the beauty of this concept is that you can have your own foundation, in a sense, without the administrative and investment burdens.” In conclusion, it is significant that the NADA “states” of Cleveland, Detroit and metropolitan New York have decided to recognize their dealer leaders with an Ambassadorship upon completion of their terms in office. What a fitting tribute that is. To all Ambassadors, we thank you ever so much. Your example shall motivate others and eventually reinforce a future goal of 1,500 Ambassadors! Respectfully, Robert P. Mallon Annual Report 2011 | nadA.org/cf 1 f o u n d at i o n A M B A S S ADO R S Nearly 50 new Ambassadors were named in 2011, and the Foundation is now focused on reaching its next goal of 1,000 Ambassadors. “I’ve always said the first 500 will be the hardest,” Foundation Chairman Bob Mallon said. “The next 500 will be easier.” To become an Ambassador, a dealer, company, association or individual pledges a tax-deductible donation of $10,000 to the Foundation in their own name or in recognition of loved ones, living or deceased. Then a grant is made to organizations of the donor’s choice in amounts of at least $1,500 every three years—forever. Dealers who pledge three or more Ambassadorships become Ambassadors of Distinction. Each year, more than $250,000 is donated to organizations in the public or private sector, supporting a variety of causes, from emergency medical services and education to job training for adults with disabilities. In 2011, 155 Ambassadors in 36 states presented grants to their chosen organizations. Since 1994, more than $1 million has been donated through the Ambassadors program to organizations across the country. 2 Dale Willey NADCF Ambassador Program Chairman Ted Brodlieb* William Burke Robert C. McCARTHY MEMORIAL FUND Since 2002, the Foundation , through its Frank E. McCarthy Memorial Fund, has contributed $140,000 to Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), placing 14 skilled service dogs. In the spring of 2011, the Foundation expanded its support of CCI to help wounded veterans, pledging $20,000 to support the training of two additional dogs. In the fall, those dogs were matched with their new owners: Charles Chesnes, a 10-year-old from Delaware, Ohio, who uses a wheelchair, and Adam McCann, a former Marine from Oberlin, Ohio, who was injured in the Iraq war. “Giving a service dog to someone in need is a beautiful thing,” says Foundation Chairman Robert P. Mallon. “I know Frank McCarthy would be proud of us for honoring his memory in such a touching way.” McCarthy served as chief operating officer of NADA for more than 33 years. Frank E. Since 1990 and 1992, respectively, the Sanchez and Winston Memorial Funds were Joseph J. Sanchez Grants In 1985 the Joseph J. Grants worth $524,000 have been dispersed as of 2011. 12 gifted at a rate of $5,000 or $3,000. In 2011, it was decided to continue designating additional gifts of $2,000 (in the case of the Sanchez Fund) and $4,000 (for the Winston Fund) to bring earlier, lesser grants up to the $7,000 level. Seventeen of those affected colleges/universities received grants in 2011. John P. Winston, Sr., Grants In 1990 the John P. Winston, Sr., Memorial Fund was established for the study of ethics discipline. The fund honors NADA’s late corporate secretary, an accomplished attorney who was dedicated to ethical practices and who was a deeply religious family man. The Legacy Program was established 11 years ago to recognize those who have committed to the Foundation in their estate planning. It is helpful to people who wish to take advantage of the Foundation’s 501(c)(3) status. Specific designations may be proposed by donors in their plans, or a pledge to the Legacy Program can be made to any of the Charitable Foundation’s programs. In this way, members of the retail automotive family are given a unique opportunity to make bequests that celebrate their life’s work. Giving thanks: NADA Foundation Chairman Bob Mallon (second from left) appears with, from left, Ashley, Roseanne and Patrick Hughes. Ashley and Patrick are recipients of aid from Scholarship America and the Foundation. The Foundation was among the first organizations to support 9/11 families with contributions to Scholarship America, making it possible for the sons and daughters of Americans killed or permanently disabled during the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to attend college. Initially, $1.6 million was raised through the Foundation’s Survivors Relief Fund. In the 10 years since the attacks, the Foundation has provided scholarship aid to nearly 80 students. In 2011, 63 manikins, with an approximate value of $50,000, were donated to worthy organizations in 20 states. Since the program began, more than 4,500 manikins—with a total value of $2.5 million—have been given in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to Resusci-Anne, Resusci-Baby, and Resusci-Junior, which teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills, the Little Anne AED training systems donated by the Foundation teach how to properly use the automated external defibrillators located in many public places. The Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund provides financial assistance to dealership employees after natural disasters. In 2011, more than $40,000 was distributed through the fund. Funding The Foundation has contributed nearly $13 million to communities throughout the nation, supporting emergency assistance for dealership employees after natural disasters, as well as scholarships for deserving students. As a result of its collaboration with Canine Companions for Independence to provide trained assistance dogs for children, the Foundation is now embarking on a similar mission to help wounded warriors. The Foundation welcomes inquiries about any of its programs. Gifts to the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation are tax-deductible as charitable contributions. The support of every dealer and friend of the industry, as well as that of any individual who believes in the objectives of the Foundation, is welcomed and encouraged. Your generosity guarantees the continuation of the Foundation’s good works! The Foundation has been recognized nationally for providing assistance (through Scholarship America) to family members of the 9/11 victims, as well as for its efforts after Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf states and the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The Foundation is funded by franchised new-car and -truck dealers and friends. Each year, thousands of contributions are received from those who seek to express their thanks to their communities. 8400 Westpark Drive McLean, VA 22102-3591 8400 We stp ark D riv e | McLean, Virginia 22102 | 703.821.7233
