The Prep-Team
In the last 8 years of the VSS, 48 AFS volunteers and staff have donated their time in organizing the VSS as preparatory team members. If you look at
the numbers for support and trainers throughout the years, we have grown to well over 150 volunteers and staff being a part of the VSS team, giving
trainings and running the event. This year we will break an even bigger record - over 200 AFS volunteers will have volunteered at the VSS! This herald
will be all about the people breaking the 200 - the trainers, support and preppers of the VSS 2015 in Germany.
As you might imagine by seeing this number, the VSS is built upon immense teamwork that mostly takes part online - with a large part of the team
never meeting until the moment they arrive at the venue. The people taking care of coordinating this massive event are the prep team, they started
working 8 months before the VSS, meet up only once 7 months before it and the rest is done online until they meet up 2 days before the VSS starts,
the work isn’t over until 2 months after the VSS when all documents are collected and outcomes are released.
It is with pleasure that I introduce to you the prep team of 2015: Anne Reck (Germany), David Kalwar (Germany), Egill Thorarinsson (Iceland/Sweden),
Gert Lucas (Germany), Inga Menke (EFIL), Marín Björt Valtýsdóttir (EFIL), Pieter Verstuyf (Belgium Flanders/UK) and Valentina Milanese (Italy).

internationally.
What is your favorite place on earth? The best place on earth is Constance/
Germany where I live and where I had so many AFS hosting experiences. But I
like Scandinavia as well and - New Zealand!
What is your favorite word in your native language and its meaning in English? Definitely “Ehrenamt” which means “volunteering”, because I strongly
believe that volunteering for the right ideas can change the world - like we all
do in AFS.
David

Oman - it is really a place worth visiting!
What is your favorite word in your native language and its meaning in English? Ahh I am really bad at picking one thing over another, not big on putting things into binary so I don’t really have a favorite word in Icelandic - the
word that I use the most even when I speak English would be “já” meaning
yes so that is all I can give.
Who is the person you would never like to meet? That I will keep for myself ;)
What is your weirdest dream (while sleeping)? I don’t really dream or at least
I don’t remember them, I just go to bed and fall a sleep and then hours later

Baggins when he finally decides to follow the dwarfs: “I’M GOING ON AN ADVENTUREEEE!”

What is your weirdest dream (while sleeping)? Once I got a phone call from
a penguin in the Arctic who wanted me to help them save the polar icecaps
from the FBI. Suddenly, I was in the arctic, although if I recall correctly, it
seemed like another snowy city- with grocery stores and houses and everything.
The penguins dragged me to a side and gave me some cool weapons; I only
distinctly remember one of them- an enormous razor blade. I tried to fire this
weapon on aliens now (I didn’t notice that initially I was supposed to kill the
FBI).

Annika
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: One is rarely able to go there just for vacation!
What is your special silly skill? Not sure if I have one... Maybe being
able to laugh endlessly without a reason?
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? Ancient Egypt.
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the
rest of your life? Learning languages, travelling and having tons of
animals!
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: The other side of the world,
an amazing hostfamiliy, best experience ever and since: Fernweh!
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: Because I
had basically no idea about it and I somehow felt it was a good moment to get to know something very different and golden
What is your special silly skill? I can touch my nose with my tongue
(though I actually think it is cool, not silly)
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? probably to the
60s/70s as there were no smartphones yet and it seems like the air was
more political here
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest
of your life? with my family and friends, doing social work, some ecological farming, travels
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: Exchange year 2001/2002, since
then volunteering in Sending and Hosting
Camps and Counselling, project work, training, Intercultural Lear..
Mirjam
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: I fell in love with a country
that for many Germans is not really exotic, even though it is a country with four official languages and has a wild and charming landscape. It is a quite diverse country,
but everyone loves chocolate and cheese and eats incredible amounts of it. I learned
a language that now comes handy in many other countries, especially a big neighboring state, even though I am told I have a slight rural accent.
What is your special silly skill? I am quite brilliant at heavily criticizing people in a
very charming way. So you cannot be angry at me for a long time ;-)
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? I would always go back in time
as I’m really interested in history. Probably I would choose the 19th century, a time
full of changes and developments. And, most important, it is also an epoch when
people still used to write letters. As a dedicated postcard writer, I appreciate it when
people take the time to write something by hand and when a message actually needs
some time to be delivered.
Eva
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of your life? I
would have a big house at the countryside, surrounded by a big garden and a swimming lake. I would grow vegetables and fruit and spend my day cooking and baking
for all the friends and family staying at the house. A significant part of the day I would
dedicate to reading a good novel. Occasionally I would go travelling for a couple of
weeks and discover new places, meet new people that I can then invite back to the
house.
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: Went away in 07, came back, got infected,
started volunteering, did almost everything from chapter work to trainings and still
addicted.
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: Because I didn’t
know anything about the country, just that it has a lot of beaches.
What is your special silly skill? Imitating people
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? Back to the beginning to finally meet Adam!
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of
your life? At the beach in Panama
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: AFS is my family and my family is
AFS.
Katharina
Lea
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: Well, I have three
host countries...the first I choose because of language, the second I just
choose the language and price range and let AFS decide with of the 4 countries
left would be it and the third was about the project. By then I would have gone
everywhere :)
What is your special silly skill? I’m awful with names and faces...therefore
meeting the same people again and again. By now I mastered looking absolutly excited to see again while thinking “who is this person”.
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? I don’t what a time
machine. I like the here and now, but if I could get a machine that beams me
to whatever place I’m in. Would make seeing my friends around the world so
much easier!!
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of your
life? A lot more traveling, but otherwise I really like what I do. I enjoy my job
and volunteering...I would not really spend my time all that different. I might
go out to fancy restaurants and do more shopping too, if I had lots of money.
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: “I have been an exchangestudent in
99/00 and have been active ever since.
After I felt that one exchange is not enough I did 2 volunteeers...
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: It has the language with the most native speakers worldwide. And it’s very very very
different.
What is your special silly skill? I can ride the ride the high wheeler.
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? I don’t know. The
longer I think about the question, the lesser I can come up with an answer.
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of
your life? Same as I would now. Life is fun, why change anything?
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: Great country, much fun, hard
times, friends for a lifetime, a new family.
Marion
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: I was a HUGE fan of Tokio Hotel!
What is your special silly skill? I only have serious skills.
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? I would go back and have a chat with some historical figures (not sure
if they’d want to chat with me though) such as the famous Serbian poet Branko Miljkovic and Gavrilo Princip, I’d want to go
and spend time in Yugoslavia in the ‘60 and see if it was really as nice as some say or if they’d send me to a working camp
due to criticizing the regime; I’d go to Brazil and meet young Chico Buarque and make him fall in love with me and marry me;
I’d go to Germany in ‘68 and participate in the student protests... And I would totally go to the ‘70 and listen to Foucault’s lectures on Collège de France (since this is fiction, I’d also understand French)... Oh boy I’d have so much fun with this machine!!!
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of your life? I would move to the seashore and spend
time taking care of my flower garden, reading, thinking and writing. But then I would get famous with my writing and would
move to a big city and enjoy champagne, cocaine and all the nasty stuff. And in my free time, which would be all the time I
have, I’d still be volunteering as a way to fill my inner emptiness. At the end of the day, good that money issues get in the
way...
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: A random, “just for fun” application for an exchange program escalated into 6 years
of volunteering, training and traveling.
Emilija
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: The fictitious
reason was its modern education system, but honestly I was in love with the
nature and I wanted to experiment some real cold weather.
What is your special silly skill? “Procrastination, expecially in this period of
my life :D Being serious, I’m really good at forgetting thigs, not many people
can reach my level...almost a proficient :D”
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? “I would travel to
2100, to see how fast and how much we’ll actually change... and check if
beer will always tast the same :D
Or I would go back to 1900, to live in person this century that shape our actual world and maybe improve somethhing !”
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of
your life? On a mountain-bike or on a sail boat: not too sedentary, not too
active..
Rebecca
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: “AFS ITA, AFS GER, EFIL -> IP and TR
programme ECTP = Europe’s Coolest Teen Participants !”
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: I want far away
from Germany and I went to learn Spanish. I didn´t go with AFS. My organisation gave me my host country and i was really happy. But not with the
organisation.
What is your special silly skill? That’s hard... I don´t now. I like laugh and I
like jokes
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? I don’t know. The longer I think about the question, the lesser I can come up with an answer.
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of
your life? Same as I would now. Life is fun, why change anything?
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: Great country, much fun, hard times,
friends for a lifetime, a new family.
Riccardo
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: You know how
some people strategically choose a country where a lot of people want to
go but very few actually get to spend their exchange there, so you are more
likely to get selected for another country? Yeah, I did that, too, but it didn’t
work out...
What is your special silly skill? I am able to mechanically recite an enormous amount of anti-jokes. Only available in German, though.
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? I’d press the “Random” button.
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of
your life? Being a university student, studying all different kinds of courses!
Robin
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: A lot of Koalas, Zebras and incredibly awesome people! Also, you never stop learning, I guess.
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: I wanted to go to
a country wich a little similar, applied for SH departure, got accepted and
realized that the country I originally wanted to go to was only available in
NH. So I picked my host country because it starts with the same letters and
is roughly in the same region.
What is your special silly skill? Being silly?
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? I’m happy hear and
now and afraid of what might happen if I use a time machine. I’m staying.
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of
your life? I would travel more but not exclusively. I would cook a lot and try
all sorts of exotic ingredients and dishes.
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: AFS for me is awesome and it isn’t
over yet. #SH07 #Paraguay, #NH10 #Malaysia
Tabea

and don’t like Danish.
What is your special silly skill? I can make Germans laugh.
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? Assuming I could
only make one trip and then get back to where I am right now, I’d like to
take a look at how the world will be about 100 years from now.
Torsten
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest
of your life? I would open a café in a semi-hidden corner of an European
capital and use it to take over the world while I master the art of espresso brewing. During the time I’m not busy secretly growing my café franchise I would be reading.
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: I thought it was gonna be a year
away thingy and that would be it.
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: “The first one I couldn’t pick
because I got a scholarship. But still it would have been on top of my list. I always wanted to go there because everything is supposed to be just a bit bigger than in other
countries. My second host country got chosen because I didn’t know a thing about it. I
couldn’t even name the capital. It’s sad isn’t it? Since I was curious about the country a
new different culture I’ve chosen this country. “
What is your special silly skill? Really really good (or bad :D ) at wordplays.
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? I wouldn’t travel to far in time and
place. I would stay in the Berlin area and travel back to the year 1989. Not just because I
was born in 1989. No because of the fall of the Berlin wall. It is an event which changed
Europe and the western world. Since I am from the former eastern part of Germany living
a life in freedom and being able to travel around the world is a great privilege which is
connected to the year 1989.
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of your life? “Oh
- that’s a tough one. I kinda like the idea. But I am not sure if just money would make
me happy. Probably naming the things you do with money, buying a couple nice houses
around the world and since I like fast cars I am sure the one or the other Audi would suddenly appear in my garage.
But what I also would like to do is to give as many scholarships to students who want
to go on an exchange as possible. My first AFS experience wouldn’t have been possible
without a scholarship. I am still today grateful that I was able to experience AFS. “
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: 07/08: 2000 people, 8000 cows & 1 traffic 10/11:
high temperatures, high humidity, Tereré and the word “tranquilo” -Both life changing e..
Vinicius
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: Because it was the
only European country for which I had absolutely no real clue about, except
for the fact it has the most amazing chocolate and fries. That was a good
enough reason :P
What is your special silly skill? I can pee incredibly fast. And I can make really
believable cat sounds.
If you could use a time machine, where would you go? I would go to Paris or
New York in the roaring twenties. And I would dance all day and night and
write poetry and talk about real shit and I would also have a big fat white cat
named Rozamunda to match my big fury coat.
If money wasn’t an object, how would you spend your time for the rest of
your life? I already tend to live my life as if money is not an object. So realistically, I would probably just do what Im going to be doing anyways: build myself an amazing tree house and buy thousands of books and musical instruments and baby pigs and cats and dogs, write novels and live there happily
ever after. :)
Yasar
Sum up your AFS experience in a tweet: We came, we cried, we danced.
Why did you choose your host country without naming it: I chose my host

sea, a mermaid? A kentaur since I’m a saggitarius? Or maaaaybe, a woman
who understands a man? Guess I got that one covered already, kinda :’D a
man who understands a woman??
What is your first thought when you wake up in the morning? Pineapple? Octopus?? Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesame.
What is your go-to two line joke?
When nothing goes right....go left. Haha. Hahaha.
