AFS Twin Cities Chapter... Hosts a half-day
seminar beginning at noon and an evening dinner meeting featuring Ken Copi from Elkem Metals Inc, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, October 14th at the
Green Mill in Shoreview, Minnesota.
About the Topic… The half-day seminar will focus on “Improvements in your Ductile Iron Treatment Process” which will show ways to increase Mg
recovery, reduce smoke, slag, and ladle buildups, and
improve microstructures. The evening presentation topic will deal with “The Importance of Sand Additions

in a Coreless Induction Iron Melter.” Everyone is
welcome to register. The talks are especially beneficial for furnace operators, melt &
mold line supervisors, plant metallurgists, QA managers, and plant environmental
engineers.
About the Speaker… Ken Copi received his bachelor of science degree

in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Tech University in 1970. He
worked at six different foundries mostly as a melt superintendent and plant
metallurgist, and was involved in green-field startups at Auburn and Victaulic.
Ken worked in metallurgical sales for several years and has been selling inoculants and MgFeSi with Elkem Materials since 2005. He served on AFS Division 8C since 1978 (past chair), five iron melting conferences (chair and vice
chair), and is a Ductile Iron Society member 1988-2000, 2005-present. Ken
has authored approximately 30 papers on SiC, coreless furnace operations,
gating and risering, and foundry alloys. He presented at various ASF and DIS
functions, Australasian Foundry Conference, and was AFS rep to Mexican
Foundry Society iron melting conference.
