The Potentate’s Message
As another month is drawing to a close we can look back and see what was accomplished
and what still needs to be accomplished. The repairs on the building are progressing well
and when this is completed a large headache will be put to rest. The Task Force, to replace
our tenant in A La Carte, is progressing well and the light at the end of the tunnel is shining
brighter. By working together WE can accomplish great things and move our beloved
Fraternity forward.
As WE look forward lets enjoy the upcoming events and functions on our agenda. The Easter
Bunny will be hop, hop, hopping around Hooper’s Hollow shortly and the little people will be
grabbing up the eggs in record time. The Military, Police and Fire Appreciation Day honoring
our First Responders and Military and this year a car show to go along with it will be a highlight of the month. Anyone
who has a car they would like to display, contact the Oriental Guide, Denny Hardy or Illustrious Sir Tom Robinson and
they will give you the “how to do it” information. And last but not least, IT’S CIRCUS TIME! Anyone that can come out
and help with the set up and tear down, of the area, your efforts will be greatly appreciated. The dates and times for
these, work times, are in the calendar book, or you can check the calendar of events in the front of this publication. Also
come out and enjoy the Circus with us.
Parade Season is in full swing, with a couple under our belts and more to come. This is a GREAT way to showcase our
beloved fraternity and let the public know what we do and why we do it: “All About Kids.”
To look back for a moment, another big THANK YOU to all the Nobles and Ladies who had a part in putting on the
Potentate’s Ball. What an elegant evening. My Lady and I thank you, as do our family members, who were in attendance,
and my, 93 years young, Mother had a great time seeing and talking with friends she had not seen in years. That made
the whole evening worthwhile.
Remember you only get out of anything what you put into
it. Come out and get involved and have a GOOD TIME with
us.

5 for 5 Membership Program Guidelines
‘The Noble’ is the top-line signer (T.L.S.) for FIVE New
Candidates who become EGYPT Shriners and each
of whom remains current in their payment of dues for a
period of FIVE years.
The TLS must have remained current in paying HIS own
dues for that same period and not have been suspended
during that same period for non-payment of dues.

A ‘new noble’ must remain Egypt Shriners for at least one
year prior to transferring membership to another Shrine
Center to qualify under the program.
Should any of the ‘new Nobles’ resign their membership or
be suspended for non-payment of dues, that ‘new noble’
will no longer be included in this incentive program. The
TLS must nominate a new candidate and that replacement
candidate must remain a Noble as described above for 5
years, as well as the TLS’s other candidates.
When the TLS has nominated five Shriners who remain
current in the payment of their dues for five years, he will
receive a Life Membership at a stated meeting.
This program will commence January 1, 2015. It is NOT
retroactive!

The Shriners Hospitals for Children in Tampa
specializes in pediatric orthopedics and because of
that, Radiology has a critical role in the patient care
and treatment plan. Since the Hospital specializes
in care for children, we strive to have a “kid friendly”
environment in order to help to reduce any anxieties
the children may have. Happier children have less
stressed parents and when everybody is relaxed it
is good for all.
in height and has a floating tabletop making it
easier to transfer wheelchair dependent patients
as well as aiding in positioning them quickly. The
table is situated so parents or the techs have full
access around the patient as needed. After taking
the x-rays the images are available for the medical
staff to review on any hospital computer.
We also have x-ray systems used in the operating
rooms similar to these in the pictures. These
systems are used to assist the surgeon during
the patients operation ensuring the best possible
surgical outcome.
Let’s take a look at one of our typical exam/
treatment rooms.
The X-ray technologists work together to create a
warm friendly atmosphere for the children. They
are well trained to accommodate a wide variety of
patients who range from infants to young adults,
patients with physical disabilities and those who
have never had an X-ray who are here for treatment
of their first broken bone. The technologists ease
these fears by singing songs, using an I pad or
by simply lowering their voices which relaxes the
patient. The goal of the department is to obtain
quality images for the physicians, and to create an
enjoyable experience for each child and parent.
The waiting room has framed x-rays of many types
of animals and items for the patient and families to
look at and try to guess their identity. The patients
can watch the Disney channel on the TV or take a
few minutes to color while waiting to be called into
the exam room.
We have two x-ray rooms, both of which can be
used in many different applications. Our most
colorful of the two rooms is decorated with Winnie
the Pooh and all his friends. This can often distract
the child in a positive way, while making the entire
x-ray taking procedure easier to perform. This
room is equipped with an overhead lift track system
which is used if necessary to lift a child to the table
top.
Our other room has the very latest technology.
“Digital x-ray image capture” which means the
image is available for the technologist to see within
seconds of taking. The room also has a state of the
art table and generator. The table is fully adjustable

Circus and Carnival is coming to town.
Circus Hollywood, with the big Circus
tent, Animals, and Circus acts are ready
to entertain us.
We need all the Shriners, Ladies, and
friends to be at the Raymond James
Stadium parking lot on April 16-17-18-19,
2015 to help support our Shrine Center
and provide another Egypt Shrine Circus for our community and the children. As
you enter the Circus please sign in with the Greeters and receive your 2015 Circus
Patch and get your assignments to help. We need ticket takers, ushers, and extra
Nobles with a fez to help welcome the public.

month for the Brandon Shrine Club Shriners. We
had a successful spaghetti & meatballs fund raiser
dinner at our clubhouse. It was well attended and
all the delicious dinners were sold. Thanks to Noble
Sherman Hendry for preparing the meals with the
assistance of Noble Steve Landers Jr. and Lady
Carolyn Tedder. The club also held a social with
our Ladies which was very enjoyable. Our new club
President Miguel Viruet cooked a wonderful dinner
with the assistance of Noble Joshua Vargo and Lady
Carolyn Tedder.
Nobles, are invited to attend the Brandon Shrine
Club which meets the last Monday of the month: 6:00
p. m. cocktails, 7:00 p. m. dinner. The club is located
at 125 Skywood Drive in Seffner, 33584. On even
numbered months a social is held with our Ladies.
On the odd numbered months a business meeting is
held. Nobles only.
Citrus Shrine Club

Since our last meeting, Noble President Jim Furtado
was in a “Fender-Bender”. He is doing OK, but not
quite up-to-par as yet. Say a little prayer for him.
While in that mood, say one for Noble Chuck Bradley’s
Lady Betty who is in rehab recovering from a fall she
took last month.
Lou & Barbara Irizarry were among the notables.
Our Club Director, Lt. Colonel Wayne Reedy, who
was just named “Mason of the Month” by his Blue
Lodge, and his Lady Barbara were on hand as were
President Jim Furtado and his Lady Charlotte.
With warmer weather coming, we will be utilizing our
outdoor pavilion more as it gives us more room to
spread out, what with the sun setting later every day
and the popularity of our socials growing, we can use
it.
We received notification that we are now the proud
owners of a “Brick” in the “Pathway of Honor” and we
are also Boosters for the Sands. Next time I go down
to Tampa, I’ll get a “pic O’ the Brick” for the website.
Citrus Shrine Club plans to make a donation in April
to the Transportation Fund from our recycling efforts.
Aluminum Cans and old newspapers do add up to
cash. We have been quite successful over more
years than I can count and as time goes by, our
methods change and revenue increases, enabling
us to help EST in their efforts to help those who need
it more than we do.
District No. 19 had their annual Out-Door-Degree
on March 14 in which many Shriners participated,
among the notables were MW James Ford, RW
Mike McCool, RW Rick Hoover, RW Gene Hagan, W
Don Cowart along with several local Shriners, total
attendance 94 Masons, including our two candidates,
Brothers Sam Strom and Ghasan Hasan who are
possible candidates for the next Shrine Ceremonial,
June 6 is just around the corner.

Our March Social, thank goodness, did not have
Corned Beef and Cabbage. I like Corned Beef and
Cabbage, but not seven nights in a row, if you know
what I mean. Good old Chicken and Dumplings, yeah;
and the desserts, and the finger-food – magnifique!
Once again, Ill. Sir Rich Leger and Lady Toby with

On March 3rd we had our Board and General meeting
with an excellent meal prepared by Larry Spaulding.
Everyone seems to really enjoy these dinners prior to
the General Meeting. Thank you Larry!
George Knauer is continuing to replace the ceiling
tiles in the hall which is greatly improving the
appearance for rentals. Thank you Larry!
The paper days have been successful. Thank you to
the volunteers.
The MARCH social was a St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
Everyone was Irish that day! Tony was playing some
Irish music along with his regular dance tunes. We
served Corn Beef and Cabbage as our meal to keep
with the tradition.
We welcome back Sally and Roy at the next social in
April. They always put on a great show.
Highlands Shrine

Greetings from the Ridge. Wow! March was a busy
month for the club with our St. Patrick’s social. Many
Nobles, ladies & guest displayed their green for the
occasion and needless to say a good time was had
by all. Also, we had our annual Spaghetti Dinner
fundraiser which was again very successful. Thanks
to Noble Jim Keaveny who chaired the project and all
the nobles and ladies that worked to make this event
a success.
We are very appreciative of all our northern nobles
and friends who continue to support our weekly
activities of Saturday Morning $5.00 Breakfasts,
flea markets, and shrine stores operations, Tuesday
Cards, Wednesday morning coffees, Friday Darts
and Bunco the 4th Tuesday of the month.

grounds in shaded areas. These accommodations
are reserved for Nobles and Masons only, at a very
nominal donation. So nobles and brothers, set your

telephone number and we will get back to you shortly.
In closing, we urge all of our Nobles and Ladies to
plan to support your club more in 2015 by helping
with activities and attending the socials, business
meeting, special activities, etc. These activities are
planned for you but your support is needed to have a
successful year. Remember, this is your club. Isn’t it

Humidor Club

Our April Social will be on Saturday, April 11th. Check
the newsletter for the theme for April. One thing
for sure, it will be a really fun night so make your
reservations right away if you have not already done
so. Call the Shrine office and leave your reservation
on the answering machine at 863 382-2208.
As any adult cigar aficionado can attest, there is
nothing worse than having one’s perfectly good
cigars get dried-out and become un-smokeable.
First, knowing a precious cigar was potentially
ruined because of forgetful negligence is a hard pill
to swallow. Secondly, actually holding a dry cigar is
depressing. However, depending on how long the
cigar has been dried, all hope is not lost. Take a
look at your dried-out cigar. If the wrapper remains
intact and there is no cracking or peeling, the cigar
is salvageable. If it has begun to unravel, just throw
it away, as the smoke will be altogether unpleasant.
Also, in an effort to cut cost, the newsletter is now on
the internet. If you have not been on our website, go
to www.highlandsshrine.com. This will get you on the
club website and then click on the HSC newsletter
and select the month. If you do not have internet
The most important thing to have when rescuing
dry cigars is patience. Most techniques take several
weeks to work, so remind yourself – this process
takes some time. Place the cigars in a humidor
that hasn’t been recharged lately and let the cigars

absorb what is left of the humidity (a hygrometer is
particularly handy here). After a few days, recharge
the humidifier and reintroduce the cigar to a full
humid environment, ideally 70% humidity. The slow
moisture absorption is key here. Putting a dried-out
cigar in a freshly charged humidor causes moisture
to be absorbed too quickly. This can cause the dry
leaves to split open and ruin the cigar. After about four
to six weeks, the cigar may be ready to be smoked.
The formerly dried-out cigar may taste a little more
bitter than it usually would and burns quite hot, but
it’s perfectly smokeable and enjoyable.
Lakeland Shrine
Club

The Lakeland Shrine Club continues to stay busy
with 26 trips to the Shrine Hospital in February. All
of those that transport the Shrine Children to their
appointments express the joy they experience as
they witness the transformation’s being made to
these children by the great work the hospital does.
To watch a child go from a wheelchair, to crutches,
to eventually walk without help is truly a blessing
in disguise. We invite you to come join us and
experience firsthand the work we all help to support.

Ford in Davenport for making a donation to Shriner
Children by helping us obtain a 2014 Ford Van to
replace our old one. Because he was so generous
we were able to upgrade our van so we now don’t
have to worry about the safety of our Shrine Children
during transport.
Some of our members helped out with the Sam
Swope Memorial Charity Ride that took place at Bahia
Shrine on March 8th. This ride has raised close to 1
and ½ million dollars in the last 6 years that was all
donated to the Tampa Shrine Hospital. Sam Swope,
a very generous philanthropic man who donated a
large portion of the money raised, passed away in
December. This year’s ride was dedicated to him and
was a great success. We look forward to presenting
the hospital another large check on April 27th.
We had another well attended meeting in February
and welcomed two new members. We meet at

the Golden Corral on 98 N in Lakeland on the 4th
Thursday of the month. Everyone is welcome to join
us. Bring your ladies for a meal at 6:30 and stay for
the meeting at 7:30. We would love to see some new
faces.
New Port Richey
Shrine Club

The origin of St. Valentine’s Day as a celebration of
love is lost in history. In fact, the origin of St. Valentine
is also lost. Valentine was a very popular name in
Roman times and three priests qualify as the “real”
St Valentine. On February twelfth in New Port Richey
there was very little concern about who the real St
Valentine might be. As the first meeting in our new
facility, the concern was for the quality of the food
and the skill of the bartenders. Fifty Shriners and
their ladies, which included six couples from Canada,
showed up for the event, so the pressure was on the
club to provide a party worthy of the occasion. The
meal choices were roast turkey breast or fried fish
and both were judged to have been excellent. In
honor of the day all of the ladies were presented with
a rose and a box of candy. The consensus was that
the party was a great success however there was a
request that the ladies be presented roses and candy
at every meeting. Our decision to change meeting
places was proven correct, in that our previous
meeting room would not have been big enough or as
comfortable for the number of people attending this
event.
Our speaker on that day was Carol Sue Roberts (last
name is not really necessary) and her main topic
was the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine. As usual her
presentation was very informative and well done.
Many of the guests were surprised at the interaction
of the LOS with the Shriners hospitals not just in
terms of money raised but also knit goods, etc. Carol
also gave descriptions of the Daughters of the Nile
and other organizations that included active roles for
women.

Pinellas Shrine
Club

This is our first contribution of news for our club
even though we have been organized for over a
year. Our officers for 2015 are Noble Jay Dingman,
President; Noble Trace Meek, Vice President; Noble
Chas Jordan, PP, Secretary; Noble Bill Sundquist,
Treasurer.
By forming this new club this group of younger
Shriners have breathed new life into Pinellas Shriners
who have seen several of the older Pinellas clubs go
away because of lack of interest. We must say they
are doing a fine job
Our club is the fastest growing shrine club connected
to Egypt Shrine. Six new members were voted in at
the February Meeting
Noble Dingman just happens to own the Barley
Mow Brewing Company of Largo FL. He recently
purchased a commercial property to expand his
brewing operation and has graciously given us space
in the building for a new Club Room. Nobles Ray
Jordan, Mel Roberts and Ray Terepka along with
other volunteers have generously donated furniture,
memorabilia, a new club banner, carpentry and
painting expertise to complete the renovation of the
space. As of this writing renovations to this space are
taking place and the writer is sure that this facility will
be the envy of every Egypt Shriner.
Past activities have included Noble Dingman
providing beer for the Block Party in Ybor City for
the Shriners and the Knight Parade. Our Nobles also
participated at the Shriners Fair Day. The club also
had a bar setup at the Tailgate Party for the East
West Shrine Game in January. So you can see we
are trying to make ourselves a valuable part of the
Egypt Shrine Activities.
We would like to encourage all Shrine Nobles to
check us out at our new Club Room on the Second
Tuesday of each month at 521 Commerce Dr. W.

Shrine Club

APRIL, for our Club means PANCAKE Brunch Time.
Street sales at local supermarkets, planned by Gene
Welper and Bob Harris, get our Nobles lined up with
signs, tickets, aprons and smiles to collect donations
and sell tickets for the Pancake brunch.
For the actual brunch, George Banes leads the
kitchen crew in making enough pancakes to feed the
1,500 people expected. Past & Current Potentate,
Divan members and members of Showman’s club
can be seen working along with our Nobles cooking
the pancakes and sausage. Rich Leger has been
known to slip a few blueberries into some lucky
customers pancake.
The dining room at the community Hall only holds 400
customers at a time and our Nobles, wives, DeMolay
boys and Mom’s help set up, clean up and reset
tables so all enjoy their meal. In addition others help
serve seconds on coffee, pancakes and sausage.
When the clean up is over and everything is put
away for October; tired smiles are exchanged and
our old bones go home for a nap knowing we do this
for a great cause: Shiner Hospitals and the kids they
serve.
Monday will get us up and ready to do our part for the
Egypt Circus by ushering in the Big Top on Friday for
the two performances.
For others it will be working with Units to at the
Circus. For me, I become “Nibbles” the clown and
will be meeting and greeting kids and families when
they enter the circus grounds. Then it’s off to perform
a skit under the Big Top with the Fun & Frolic Clowns.
April; What a month for Shriners.
We look forward to raising money for the Shriners
Hospitals and the transportation fund; finding new
members and to everyone’s mission of Love to the
Rescue.

The Director’s Staff enjoyed a wonderful month in
March. The Director’s Staff was proud to participate
in the Zephyrhills and Chasco Parades this past
month.
This month also brought the memorial service in
which we paid tribute to our fallen brothers.
We are finally nearing the Shriner Circus, so please
take the time to come out and support our Temple.
Also please remember our Corn Boil is coming up
fast on May 3rd! We are looking forward to these
great events and we hope you are too!
Fun N’ Frolic

March was a great month for the clowns with lots
of parades. I hope you’ve had a chance to get
some rest because this month will certainly not be
a time for slowing down. It’s the time of year again
when we get our chance to do what we do best
in an environment tailor made for Fun N’ Frolic!
Welcome to the 50th edition of the Egypt Shrine
Circus fellow clowns. Four days of clowning out
and entertaining kids and adults under the big top.
Make sure to watch the weekly newsletter for
information about the nitty gritty details of the
events to come from Boss Clown and the officers.
Let’s try to get as much participation as we can.
Last year we did great, let’s do even better this

The Legion of Honor had their Change of Command
Ceremony on February 5, 2015, and the Stu Lang
Activities Center, at the Egypt Shrine. The Change
of Command Ceremony is an aged old tradition
in the military signifying the passing of command
from one the outgoing Commander (Nobel John
Kimmel) to incoming Commander (Nobel George
Fenno III).
The evening started out by Commander Fenno
and Lady Sheila putting on an amazing dinner with
nearly 70 people in attendance. The Leigonetts
helped get the tables, set up and decorated and
assisted in serving the food. The Hall looked great
and the stage was set for the Change of Command
to begin.
The procession was led by Illustrious Sir Luther
G. Baker Jr. and was trailed by the incoming
and outgoing Commanders, the Color Captain
(Nobel John Kueny), and the elected officers.
The Executive Officer (Nobel Jack Kemster) was
the narrator for the ceremony, and after taking
their places the Unit Standard were passed
from the Outgoing Commander to the Incoming
Commander. This was done for two reasons; first
to show confidence to the troops the leader (in
this case the Potentate) has confidence and trust
that the incoming Commander will care for, and
provide leadership to the members of the unit, and
secondly to give the members of the unit a rallying
point to gather in times of trepidation.
After the ceremony the elected officer had their
rank pined on: Lieutenat Colonel – Tom Bishop,
Major- Jim Thompson, Captain John Kueny,
First Lieutenant Dale Perry, First Lieutenant
Mike Penlan, First Lieutenant Mark Maxey, First
Lieutenant David Hobbs, Sergeant At Arms Chett
Tomas.
The evening ended with a few words from the
outgoing Commander John Kimmel, and the
incoming Commander George Fenno whose goal
it is to continue to provide support to the Shrine,
and to work with the other groups in the Shrine in
attempts to grow closer. Commander Fenno also
emphasized the need to get our younger members
involved and they are well represented in the up
and coming leadership within the Legion of Honor.
After the remarks by the incoming Commander
there was a Special Presentation made to a
veteran of WW II, Joe Varsalona.
Joe Varsalona was drafted into the Army Air Corps
on December 26th, 1942 and served until June
1945. He was assigned to the Army Air Force 483rd
Bomb Group, 15th division, and was stationed in
Foggia, Italy as a bombardier on B-17s flying over
fifty combat missions between April 1944 and April
1945.
While assigned to the 483 Bomb Group, Joe’s
Unit was responsible to hitting targets such as
factories, oil refineries, marshalling yards, storage
areas, airdromes, bridges, gun positions, and troop
concentrations in Italy, France, Germany, Poland,
Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Rumania,
Yugoslavia, and Greece. On July 18, 1944, and
again on March 24, 1945 the group received a
Distinguished Unit Citation for bravery in action.
Joe left the military without having received
commendations that were earned by him or his unit.
Tom Bishop presented Joe with the Presidential
Unit Medal, Victory in Western Europe Medal,
WWII Victory Medal, two miniature medals, and
the Outstanding Unit Ribbon. The LOH was proud
to have been able to recognize one of the unsung
heroes from WW II, who was finally recognized for
the contributions they made to this country.

Motor Corps enjoyed participating with the other
Shrine Motor Cycle Riders to lead off the 2015
Gasparilla Night Parade. Everone had a wonderful
time.
FASMC Mid Winter was a great success. Everyone
is looking forward to another fantastic FSA and
FASMC event in Sarasota this year. If you have
never attended a FSA convention take the time
and come down for a great weekend. Anyone can
attend any of the banquets. Just ask.
The Motor Corps has had several wonderful rides.
The weather is getting cooler. We have several
exciting rides coming up. All riders are always
welcome to come out and enjoy the fellowship.

Looking at the April 2015 calendar, I noted that on
Saturday, April 4th, is the Easter Egg Hunt. I fondly
remember during “days of yore”, when the Oriental
Band escorted the Easter Bunny to Hooper’s
Hollow. Things just don’t seem to stay the same
anymore...
May 7-9, 2015, will be the Florida Shrine

Association Convention at Sahib Shrine Center in
Sarasota, FL. Egypt’s Oriental Band Tong #54 is
planing to present a Mandarin Degree on Friday,
May 8th. Although the Degree is presented by
the Oriental Band - a reminder, that the Degree is
open to any Shriner so those Nobles of other Units
are invited and encouraged to “Meet the Mandarin”
and enjoy the “Masonic mysteries of the East”.
There were no Lady Birthdays in March, however
April finds a double-header with Lady Nancy
Kuncis on the 1st, and Lady Christine Martin on
the 11th. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Thanks to all the Guard members and ladies who
supported the February Fair Day at the Florida
State Fair. We had a great time escorting buses,
serving hot dogs and cokes, covering rides, and
arranging for the children to enjoy the Fair. The
Guard helped make this a special day for those
children and adults. That’s what we are all about!
Have you ever taken the time to look at the back
of a dollar bill? It should remind us of the freedoms
we enjoy as Americans. The “Great Seal” on the
left and the Latin words tell us a new nation has
begun as it emerges from a revolution. Another
quotation around the top of the pyramid says “He
(God) has favored our undertaking.” The pyramid
suggests something of Egypt slavery. At the bottom
is a “seeing eye” – a symbol of God’s watch over a
new land of freedom. There are thirteen blocks of
the pyramid to correspond to the thirteen original
colonies.
On the right hand side is a floral medallion with an
eagle on top. Thirteen stars can be seen and the
eagle is a replica of the America flag with a vertical
row of thirteen stripes emblematic of the thirteen
colonies.
The eagle once considered the symbol of America
holds an olive branch in one of its talons, the
symbol of peace. The other talon holds either
arrows or sheaves of wheat, symbols of military
preparedness or growing industry. Around the
head of the eagle is written “E Pluribus Unum”
meaning out of many one nation. At the center are
the words “In God We Trust” which are words not
written by chance.
If you missed the March 19th Provost Guard
Covered Dish Dinner and Meeting you missed a
great night out. Green was the color of the night.
The Marshal and Lady Jean had fun and the room
looked great. Thank you to all the Provost Ladies
for their favorite dish! And a special “Tip of the Fez”
to Chef Brent for a great meal.
It will be a busy April with Council Meetings, Easter
Egg Hunt, Appreciation Day, Lodge Visits, and
the 2015 Shrine Circus April 16-19. And mark
your calendars for the Florida Shrine Association
(FSA) Meetings at Sahib Shrine on May 7-10. We
will hold our regular P.G. Meeting at the Circus on
Thursday April 16th.
Remember our commitment to Membership and
get those petitions into the office for the Spring
Ceremonial. The Guard’s challenge is to get new
members for the Shrine. Let’s go Guard!
All Nobles in good standing are welcome to join
with the Egypt Shrine Provost Guard. We meet on
the third Thursday of each month at 7:30 P.M. in
the Unit Room. Come out and join with us.

March is full of parades, and the biggest of all
is the Chasco Fiesta Parade. This parade takes
place annually in New Port Richey, and has the
potential of attracting over 75,000 spectators each
year. There is a lot to do after the parade, and it
is a great family event; if you missed it this year,
please add it to your schedule for next year. The
Shriner’s active presence in this parade not only
promotes our cause for our children, but could
possibly attract new Blue Lodge members into
our fraternity. The goal is to always have fun, look
sharp and promote a positive image for our Temple.
As Brother Roosevelt once stated, “The only man
who never makes a mistake, is the man who never
does anything”. Don’t forget the upcoming Scottish
Rite Reunion on April 11th and 18th.
Tin Lizzies

As the Tin Lizzies roll along into March, we are
preparing for the 50th Egypt Shrine Circus in April,
and working on perfecting the critical maneuvers
required for capturing a victory at the upcoming
FSA meeting in May.
We are also discussing the introduction of using
sophisticated video production techniques to
record our drills. We will then use the footage for
review and improvement, which should then propel
the unit into the ranks of the elite NASCAR drivers
on the cup circuit.
March Madness is back and so is the Hoops for
LOVE™ challenge, a campaign to raise awareness
and funds for Shriners Hospitals for Children®. As you
cheer on your favorite college basketball team, you
can also continue to support the Tampa hospital.
The game is simple… Make your Hoops for LOVE gift
today to your favorite hospital and encourage your
friends and family to get involved. Visit HoopsforLOVE.
org to donate. Join the team, recruit your friends and
help all the patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children

love to train interested and willing new Nobles.
On April 7, 2015, the hospital that has received the
most donations during the challenge will win the prestigious FEZ CUP. Our 22 hospitals are all on the same
team when it comes to helping kids, but when it comes
to the FEZ CUP, our competitive side comes out.
Last month, the Tin Lizzies were successful in
securing prime seating for the Potentate’s Ball,
and a grand time was had by all. This event is

BYLAWS OF
EGYPT SHRINERS
Preamble
This temple is governed by the articles of incorporation and bylaws of Shriners International, an Iowa corporation,
and the following bylaws not inconsistent therewith.
ARTICLE 1
Name, Seal & Jurisdiction
§1.1 Name. This temple shall be known as Egypt Shriners. It was granted a charter on June 6, 1918 by Shriners
International.
§1.2 Location. It shall be located in the community designated in its charter.
§1.3 Seal. The seal of Egypt Shriners shall consist of two concentric circles between the circumferences of which
are the words Egypt Shriners, Tampa, Florida. An impression and facsimile shall be deposited with the Imperial
Recorder.
§1.4 Flag. The official flag of this temple shall be as described by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§1.5 Jurisdiction. The territorial jurisdiction of this temple is governed by the provisions of the bylaws of Shriners
International.
ARTICLE 2
Temple Membership
§2.1 Prerequisites. Membership in this temple, including a candidate’s petition and balloting thereon, is governed
by the bylaws of Shriners International. Every candidate for initiation must be proposed by at least two (2) Nobles
of this temple at a stated meeting, and if no objection is offered, the petition shall be referred to a committee of
investigation consisting of three (3) Nobles of this Temple, who shall be at liberty to report immediately or at the
next regular session of the Temple, as the Potentate shall designate. If the candidate is rejected or if any elected
candidate fails to present himself for the initiation, the initiation fee shall be returned. No Master Mason shall be
initiated a member of this Temple until he shall have a ceremony conferred upon him creating him a Noble of the
Order, paid the fee, and subscribed to these bylaws.
§2.2 Affiliation. Affiliation into this temple is governed by the bylaws of Shriners International. A petition for affiliation

must be accompanied by the petitioner’s demit from the Temple of which he was formerly a member, and the ballot
shall be taken in the same manner as a petition for initiation.
§2.3 Associate Membership. Associate membership in this temple is governed by the bylaws of Shriners
International.
§2.4 Retention of Membership. Retention of membership in this temple is governed by the bylaws of Shriners
International.
§2.5 Demit. The demit procedure is governed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§2.6 Suspension or Termination of Membership. Suspension and termination of membership in this temple are
governed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§2.7 Life Memberships. Life memberships in this temple are governed by the bylaws of Shriners International. Life
Membership will be granted to any Noble, who has been a continuous member of this Temple for fifty (50) years and
no future dues will be required, only fees required by Shriners International for meritorious service.
(a)
Prepayment of Dues. The Life Membership fee will be no less than a sum of twenty (20) times
the current dues and appropriate per capita and hospital levy to Shriners International. A Noble may apply for his
Life Membership to be paid in installments. A two hundred dollar ($200.00) non-refundable down payment will
accompany the application. The term of these payments shall not exceed five (5) years from the date of acceptance
by the Recorder. The Noble shall be responsible for his annual dues until the Life Membership has been paid in
full. Dues paid in that period will not be credited toward the balance of the Life Membership fee. The Fund for the
Prepayment of Dues is governed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
(b)
A Memorial Life Membership may be purchased by any person, Club or Unit for a deceased Noble
of Egypt Shrine by paying a minimum of two hundred dollars ($200.00).
(c)
An Honorary Life Membership may be purchased by any person, Noble, Club or Unit in honor of a
living or deceased Noble by following the regulations concerning Honorary Membership. The minimum fee shall be
two hundred dollars ($200.00).
(d)
If a Life Member is suspended and is subsequently restored to good standing, his Life Membership
shall be restored.
§2.8 Honorary Membership. Honorary membership in this temple is governed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§2.9 Discipline. The discipline of a member of this temple, for any cause other than nonpayment of dues, is governed
by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§2.10 Complaints to Imperial Potentate. Complaints or correspondence to the Imperial Potentate are governed by
the bylaws of Shriners International.
§2.11 Copies of Temple Bylaws and Shriners International Bylaws. Each member of this temple shall receive
a copy of these temple bylaws; and the recorder of the temple shall allow each member access to a copy of the
Shriners International bylaws so that they may be read and understood.
ARTICLE 3
Temple Meetings & Ceremonials
§3.1 Stated Meetings. A stated meeting shall be held on the second Wednesday of each month (except the Annual
Meeting). The exact hour of all meetings, including the annual meeting, shall be designated by the Potentate.
(a)
Annual Meeting. The annual meeting shall be held on the second Saturday in January.
§3.2 Ceremonial Sessions. Ceremonial sessions may be called by the Potentate at any time.

§3.3 Special Meetings. Special meetings may be called by the Potentate at any time, but notice must be given to
each member stating the business to be considered and no other business than that specified in the call may be
transacted.
§3.4 Sunday Meetings. No business meeting or ceremonial session shall be held on Sunday, except upon special
dispensation of the Imperial Potentate for good and sufficient cause.
§3.5 Place of Meetings. The place of all meetings shall be determined by the Potentate except as may be otherwise
required or restricted by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§3.6 Notice of Meetings. At least one week’s notice must be given of the time and place of all meetings and
ceremonial sessions. The notice may be given in the official temple publication or by letter.
§3.7 Rules of Order. Unless otherwise provided by the bylaws of Shriners International, the temple bylaws or
resolution, parliamentary procedures shall be governed by Robert’s Rules of Order.
§3.8 Admission. A Noble may not be admitted to this temple unless he exhibits to the temple an official Shrine card
for the current year.
§3.9 Quorum. A quorum consists of seven members of the temple entitled to vote, one of whom must be the
Potentate, Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban or a past Potentate of the temple.
§3.10 Order of Business. The order of business shall be as follows:

Officers
§4.1 Officers. The officers of this temple are those listed in the bylaws of Shriners International. No person may hold
more than one of the offices at the same time.
§4.2 Nomination. Candidates for elective office and Representative must be placed in nomination from the floor.
There shall not be more than one nomination speech for a candidate and the speech may not exceed five minutes.
Seconding speeches are not required or permitted.
A majority vote of the members present shall determine all questions not already provided for in these bylaws, or the
statutes of the Shriners International. For an election, if there are three (3) or more candidates for an elected office
and no majority is obtained on the first ballot, the two (2) candidates with the highest number of ballots shall remain
and a second ballot be cast to determine the winner.
§4.3 Election and Appointment. The election and appointment of officers are governed by the bylaws of Shriners
International.

§4.4 Duties. The Potentate or these temple bylaws assign the duties of officers not governed by the bylaws of
Shriners International.
§4.5 Enthronement and Installation. The enthronement and installation of the temple officers are governed by the
bylaws of Shriners International.
§4.6 Vacancies. The existence of a vacancy and filling a vacancy are governed by the provisions of the bylaws of
Shriners International.
§4.7 Delivery of Records. Each officer shall deliver all books, papers and other property of the temple in his hands
to his successor in office, or to such person and at such time as the temple may direct.
§4.8 Board of Directors. The composition and duties of the board of directors are enumerated in the bylaws of
Shriners International. The board of directors has these additional duties.
(a)
Leadership Search Committee. The board of directors shall appoint a Leadership Search
Committee as allowed by the provisions of the bylaws of Shriners International.
(b)
Temple Holding Corporation. The affairs and business of this corporation shall be managed and
conducted by a board of directors consisting of eight in number, seven of whom shall be the persons who occupy
the position of the official Divan of Egypt Shriners and one of whom shall be the immediate past potentate of such
temple, and their designation as such officers in Egypt Shriners shall constitute them the board of directors of this
corporation.
ARTICLE 5
Initiation Fees, Dues, Per Capita, Hospital Levy
§5.1 Initiation Fee. The initiation fee shall be determined at a stated or special meeting of the temple after notice has
been given to each member stating the proposed amount of the initiation fee. It must be paid in full prior to initiation.
The fee for initiation is $125, which includes the current year dues, except in the fourth quarter the fee for initiation
is $175 which includes the current year dues and the succeeding year dues.
§5.2 Dues. The annual dues shall be determined at a stated or special meeting of the temple after notice has been
given to each member stating the proposed amount of the annual, dues. The annual dues shall not be less than
prescribed by the bylaws of Shriners International. The annual dues do not include the hospital levy or the annual
per capita tax required by the bylaws of Shriners International, each of which shall be added to the annual dues. This
temple may, by affirmative vote, remit dues of a member for good cause shown either to the temple or a committee
selected for that purpose. The annual dues for regular members are $105 plus the hospital levy and the per capita
tax; the dues for associate members are $30.
(a)
Suspension for nonpayment. A member who is one year in arrears on his dues is suspended,
pursuant to the procedure recited in the bylaws of Shriners International, unless this temple votes to remit his dues.
(b)
Restoration. A member who has been suspended for nonpayment of dues may be restored to
membership pursuant to the procedure prescribed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§5.3 Life Memberships. A member may be granted a life membership in this temple as prescribed by the bylaws
of Shriners International.
§5.4 Per Capita Tax. Each member of this temple, other than life per capita members and associate members, shall
pay Shriners International per capita tax as prescribed by the bylaws of Shriners International.

§5.5 Life Per Capita. A member may pay the sum prescribed by the bylaws of Shriners International and, thereafter,
be exempt from the annual per capita tax.
§5.6 Hospital Levy. Each member of this temple, other than Permanent Contributing Membership purchasers, shall
pay the hospital levy as prescribed by the bylaws of Shriners International. This temple may remit the hospital levy
of a member whose dues have been remitted because of hardship and so advise the Imperial Treasurer.
§5.7 Permanent Contributing Membership. A member may purchase a Permanent Contributing Membership in
the Hospitals as prescribed by the bylaws of Shriners International and, thereafter, be exempt from the hospital levy.
§5.8 Assessment. The temple may levy an assessment on its members as prescribed by the bylaws of Shriners
International.
ARTICLE 6
Fiscal
§6.1 Fiscal Year. This temple must arrange its books of account, annual report and audit to conform to the calendar
year.
§6.2 Budget. This temple must adopt an annual budget, which must be in accordance with the Uniform Charts of
Accounts prescribed by Shriners International. Its preparation, inspection, presentation, adoption, appropriations,
amendments, temple reports and Imperial Recorder filing are governed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
There shall be no expenditure of funds except as authorized by the budget.
§6.3 Review. This temple is required to have its financial statements and those of its affiliated and appendant
corporations, including Shrine club holding companies, reviewed, unless an audit is required pursuant to Shrine law,
by a certified or chartered public accountant, or the equivalent in the state in which the temple is located, selected by
the temple at the close of each year. A copy of the accountant’s report and accompanying financial statements must
be filed with the Imperial Recorder.
§6.4 Personal Benefit. No part of the assets or funds may inure to the benefit of individuals personally except in
payment for services actually received or performed.
§6.5 Checks and Payment or Transfer of Funds. Transfers of funds and payment of obligations of this temple
shall be made into and from depositories approved by the board of directors, pursuant to procedures adopted by the
board of directors, and as otherwise governed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§6.6 Required Signatures. Signatures are required to transfer funds and pay obligations of this temple, in
accordance with a resolution adopted by the board of directors, and as otherwise governed by the bylaws of Shriners
International. One of the authorized signatures must be the treasurer. All checks and payments must be supported
by vouchers or requisitions.
§6.7 Annual Reports. Each Noble, committee, unit or other organization of this temple that is authorized to incur
indebtedness or to disburse or collect funds, shall make a detailed financial report, accompanied by receipts or
vouchers to the board of directors annually and at such other times as may be required.
§6.8 Construction Program and Secured or Long Term Obligations. Prior to commencing a construction program
or incurring a secured or long-term debt, as defined by the bylaws of Shriners International, this temple must follow
the bylaws of Shriners International.
§6.9 Sale of Temple Assets. Prior to this temple, or any of its affiliates, selling, leasing, exchanging, mortgaging,
pledging or otherwise disposing of all or substantially all of its property or assets, it must follow the bylaws of Shriners
International.

§6.10 Fidelity Bond. The temple must procure a corporate fidelity bond as prescribed by the bylaws of Shriners
International.
§6.11 Insurance. The temple must procure insurance policies, and the Potentate must appoint an insurance advisory
committee, as prescribed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§6.12 Indemnification. The official divan, committee members, officers and employees shall be indemnified by the
temple for all expenses reasonably incurred by them in defending themselves from any proceedings instituted or
threatened against them provided the temple votes that they have acted within the scope of their authority and are
not guilty of misfeasance or malfeasance.
§6.13 Reserve Accounts. The Temple will establish a designated facility reserve account for the sole purpose of
maintaining, repairing, or replacing Egypt Shrine buildings, grounds and equipment therein or thereon. This account
is known as the “Building Fund” and contributions can be accepted from anyone wishing to make donations to the
account. All expenditures from this account will require a majority approval of the Egypt Shriner’s Board of Directors
and a majority vote of the Nobility at a stated meeting.
ARTICLE 7
Committees
§7.1 Leadership Search Committee. This temple shall have a Leadership Search Committee. Its appointment and
duties are governed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§7.2 Insurance Advisory Committee. This temple shall have an Insurance Advisory Committee. Its appointment
and duties are governed by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§7.3 Finance Advisory Committee (optional). This temple may have a Finance Advisory Committee.
(a)
Composition. It shall consist of four at-large members of this temple. Two of the four at-large
members are to be elected each year at the annual meeting for a term of two years.
(b)
Duties. It shall:
(1) Analyze and make recommendations as to the financial affairs of the temple.
(2) Examine the proposed major financial obligations and expenditures before such obligations or
expenditures are incurred or made.
(3) Review all necessary current expenses.
(4) Examine whether any officer, department, committee, organization, unit or individual having
authority incurs expenditures that exceed the appropriations set out in the budget.
(5) Examine the system under which the financial affairs of the temple, and every subordinate body
thereof, are administered and make such recommendations from time to time as may be deemed for the good of the
temple or any subordinate body thereof.
(6) Review any bill for travel, hotel or entertainment expense of any officer or representative to
determine if it is reasonable and necessary and within the budget.
(7) Have access to all financial books, papers ad accounts of the officers and review them on a
periodic basis, and recommend certified public accountants for examination and audit.

(8) Review the financial institutions in which the funds of the temple are to be, or already are,
deposited.
(9) Investigate suitable investments and investment institutions for the funds of the temple.
(10) Evaluate the proper coverage and limits of the bonds for the treasurer and recorder, and any
other officers required to be bonded.
(c)
Reports. This committee shall issue its findings, recommendations and reports to the board of
directors of this temple.
(e)
Quorum. Three members of this committee shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business.
§7.4 Emeritus Committees. This temple shall have an emeritus committee.
(a)
Permanent Emeritus Membership may be conferred upon a Noble of Egypt Shrine by a majority vote
of the members present at a regularly scheduled temple meeting provided that Noble has served for ten (10) years
in the same appointment or elected office.
(1)
A credential’s committee, appointed by the Potentate, shall first certify the eligibility of any
Noble prior to his being elected to Emeritus status.
(2)
Anyone serving a portion of the tenth (10th) year in the same appointment or elected office
shall be considered as having served ten (10) full years in that position for his designation.
§7.5 Management and Planning Committee (optional). This temple may have a Management and Planning
Committee.
(a)
Composition. It shall consist of thirteen (13) members of the Temple, consisting of the Board of
Directors, and six (6) members from the Nobility. The Board of Directors will select six (6) members. Two (2) of
the members selected will serve a three (3) year term. Two (2) members will serve a two (2) year term and two (2)
members will serve a one (1) year term. Subsequently, members whose terms have expired will be replaced as
follows: the incoming Board of Directors will appoint two (2) members to the Management and Planning Committee
in December of each year. These members will serve a three (3) year term. The remaining term of a committee
member who might by his death, resignation or other reason creates a vacancy, shall be filled by a replacement
Noble, who will be appointed by the Board of Directors. No member shall succeed himself more than once.
(b)
Duties. It shall:
(1)
Develop a comprehensive Five Year Plan for the development and improvement of Egypt
Shrine, its membership, and its buildings and grounds. This plan would be updated in December of each year, and
it could be presented to the membership at a temple meeting during the first quarter of each fiscal year.
(2)
Make recommendations to the Chief Rabban by October 1 for his use in preparation of the
Temple operations for the ensuing year.
(3)
Report the Committee’s advice of the financial management of Temple’s affairs for the
current year, including any significant variances during the past year from the Five Year Plan and the approved
annual budget
§7.6 Other Committees. The Potentate shall appoint such other committees as may be required for the operation
of the temple’s affairs. Their duties and responsibilities shall not conflict with any provisions of the bylaws of Shriners
International or these bylaws.

ARTICLE 8
Prohibited Practices
§8.1 Unlawful Activities. It is unlawful for this temple, or any unit or club under its control, or any group of its
members, or any member acting for or on behalf of the temple, to promote or take part in any engagement or
enterprise prohibited by the law of the land.
§8.2 Shrine Law. A Noble may not violate Shrine law. The provisions of Shrine law are found in the articles of
incorporation and bylaws of Shriners International and any general or special orders at the time in effect.
§8.3 Alcoholic Beverages. The consumption of alcoholic beverages during parades and ceremonials is forbidden
by those Nobles participating therein.
ARTICLE 9
Temple Units & Shrine Clubs
§9.1 Approval. No temple unit or shrine club may be organized, or continue to exist, without the express written
approval of the Potentate.
§9.2 Bylaws. No temple unit or shrine club may be organized until its bylaws have been approved in writing by the
Potentate. No amendments to such bylaws are effective until approved in writing by the Potentate. The Potentate
may direct such modifications of the bylaws as he deems appropriate.
§9.3 Membership.
(a)
Units. Temple units must be composed solely of members of this temple. The fez of the temple must
be worn at all appropriate times except for such units which do not normally wear fezzes.
(c)
Clubs. Temple shrine clubs may include Nobles of other temples. All members of the shrine club
who are regular or associate members of Egypt Shriners are eligible to hold office.
(d)
Election of Officers. The temple units and shrine clubs shall elect their officers for the ensuing year
no later than December 10. The list of the elected officers is to be presented to the Recorder of the temple by the
last day of December for approval by the incoming temple Potentate.
§9.4 Records. The temple units and shrine clubs shall keep such financial records and inventories as directed by
the Potentate.
§9.5 Funds. The assets of shrine clubs and temple units belong to this temple. However, in the discretion of the
Potentate, he may allow assets to be in the custody of shrine clubs and the temple units. Moneys in the custody of
shrine clubs and temple units shall be deposited into accounts in the names of the shrine clubs and temple units.
§9.6 Financial Reports. The shrine clubs and temple units must prepare and submit to the board of directors all
financial reports required by Shrine law. The financial reports shall bear a certification that they are true and correct
and that no money or property is held for the benefit of the reporting organization. Funds being accumulated for any
shrine authorized purpose shall be identified as being reserved for that purpose in the financial reports.
§9.7 Government. The temple units and shrine clubs are governed by the provisions of the bylaws of Shriners
International and these bylaws not inconsistent therewith.
§9.8 Organization of Nobles. An organization of Nobles meeting as such, as defined in the bylaws of Shriners
International, are governed by such bylaws.

ARTICLE 10
Temple Publication
§10.1 Official Publication. Unless otherwise provided in Shriners International bylaws or these bylaws, a magazine
or newsletter may be established as the official publication of this temple. It shall be proper to publish all official calls
and notices therein. The official publication of this temple shall be called the “SANDS”.
§10.2 Advertising. All advertising accepted for the official publication shall be non-offensive and in compliance with
the bylaws of Shriners International and these bylaws.
§10.3 Staff. The Potentate shall appoint the editor and approve the appointment of staff members by the editor.
ARTICLE 11
Amendments
§11.1 Amendments. These bylaws may be amended as provided by the bylaws of Shriners International.
§11.2 Inconsistencies. In the event of an inconsistency between these bylaws and the bylaws of Shriners
International, the bylaws of Shriners International supersede these bylaws.
CERTIFICATION
I, _____________, Potentate of Egypt Shriners, certify that the attached resolution relating to bylaws
(amendments to bylaws) was submitted in writing at a stated meeting on _____________________________, 2015.
The resolution was laid over to the next stated meeting (a special meeting called for action thereon).

2015, was sent to every member of the temple and it recited the text or substance of the proposed bylaws (amendments

Fellow Nobles:
If you didn’t skip ahead to the Editor’s Notes (I bet everyone does) you’ve surely noticed the
temple bylaws being provided in this month’s issue. This is to allow all Egypt Shrine nobles the
opportunity to review the bylaws and proposed changes in order to make informed decisions when
voting on them at the April stated meeting.
With the many pages of bylaws included something had to get cut and unfortunately it was many
great pictures taken by our Press Corps. All is not lost however. If you’ve been reading the Sands
recently, you already know I’m posting all photos I receive online at our web site. This seems like
a great opportunity to remind everyone that we would love to have your photographs of any Egypt
Shrine related events. Our Press Corps photographers do a great job but they can’t be everywhere
