Message from Our
GRAND EXALTED RULER
John D. Amen
May brings flowers ... and a lot of ‘Elktivities’
It is May already and the flowers are here. This is a month
packed with “Elktivities”. The very first day of the month brings
with it the due date for the annual survey of charitable
programs and the per capita dues payment to Grand Lodge. For
the annual survey, CLMS will help with the task, but in this
paperless world there is still paper that needs to be mailed to
Chicago so do not delay.
Mother’s Day is up next and while it is no longer a mandatory
service, it is always a great time to dust off the old Ritual and
have a worthy Lodge event that recognizes Mother on Sunday,
May 10. It will also be a great day for the Lodge Club to hold a
brunch or luncheon. It will be packed with families on this great
family occasion.
Armed Services Day falls on Saturday, May 16 this year. It is
another good opportunity to recognize and honor servicemen
and women on active duty, and our Veterans. Just nine days
later comes Memorial Day on Monday, May 25. This special
day was born to memorialize all American Civil War servicemen
who had made the ultimate sacrifice. While it is still
appropriate to give special recognition to our Veterans who
have passed, the day has been broadened to remember all
who are no longer with us. My Lodge in Denver decorates all
those graves in the two Lodge “Elks Rests” with American flags,
and my family takes time out to meet up at the family plots in
the local cemeteries to renew our friendships.
It is also appropriate to review and adjust Lodge goals for the
year ahead. The time to be working on dues collections from
delinquent Members is now, not next February and March. The
earlier we start the more successful we will be. More than twothirds of our membership decline is from Members who fail to
pay their dues.
Last, one of the most disheartening tasks that I must perform
is to sign an Executive Order accepting the surrender of a
Lodge Charter. If your Lodge is among those thinking about
holding2796 a surrender vote, be sure to let your State
Association and Grand Lodge officials know. These people may
be able to help, but only if they have advance knowledge of the
situation. I have witnessed situations where the PGER State
Sponsor first learned of the situation only after the surrender
vote had been taken by the Lodge. That is tragic! Finally, our
warm spring weather has finally arrived. Here in Colorado it is
“Springtime in the Rockies” – the most beautiful season of all.
See you on the road.
MESSAGE FROM OUR
EXALTED RULER
Mike Balster, PER
Join me in making our lodge friendlier than ever
We as a lodge are striving to return to our most friendly lodge status
in our district. I feel we are well on our way and appreciate your
efforts. We believe that whenever we enter the lodge we are entering
a safe and friendly environment. This is true for the men entering our
lodge but not as true for some of the women. I recently learned, or
maybe realized, that women in general and especially single women
outside our lodge must be very careful. This makes sense and we all
understand the rationale and wish it was different. When women
enter our lodge, they believe it is a safer place but remain alert out of
habit or necessity. In the relaxed atmosphere in our lodge, men must
be extra vigilant to ensure that words or actions, even though they
are well meaning, do not trigger the alert of the women in our lodge.
This is very important to me, and the other officers share my concern.
While men will voice an objection to words or actions that annoy
them, women do not feel as free to voice an objection. My hope that
if an issue occurs, the woman will feel comfortable bringing it to one
of the officers knowing it will be taken seriously and handled
discretely. As women see and hear of our efforts, they will bring their
spouses back into the lodge. I believe it is the right thing to do; it
benefits members, and can increase attendance in our lodge. Join me
in making our lodge friendlier than ever.
From the Station of the ESTEEMED LEADNG KNIGHT
One natural consequence of having a bounty of terrific
members is an overflow of Charity – the cornerstone of
every Elk structure. With much appreciation, we thank
YOU for your many contributions and for your collaborative work with our staff and directors. Together, we have lived
our Elk creed thru our April Purple Pig Dinner when our lodge
hosted CHEA Therapist Becky Fahs and raised over $3000 for disabled children. Then again, during our regular lodge meeting,
when cash donations totaled more than $2000 for our First Annual
ENF Pledge Drive! YOUR acts of kindness give hope to so many!
Thank you and may we continue in our efforts during May events.
Keeping the Faith,
Minister Mike Leon, Leading Knight
From the Station of the ESTEEMED LOYAL KNIGHT
We have a new year full of opportunities to advance the
works of this amazing organization to which we all belong. To our new members, there are so many things happening here at the lodge that there is sure to be something you’re interested in doing. Be sure to come to
lodge meetings on Tuesdays to hear about our upcoming events
and committees, I am sure you will find something you’d love to
get involved in, I have found that Elks becomes more rewarding as
you get more involved. I would also like to invite our long time
members to come down help the youngsters grow into excellent
representatives of our lodge.
Fraternally,
Dale Gregory, Loyal Knight

From the Station of the ESTEEMED Lecturing KNIGHT
I have a question for Elks of 2504, how can we
show some Brotherly Love and make our lodge better? Please let one of the board members know if you have
any suggestions.
We need more lodge members to get involved with our activities. Find something you are interested in doing. Start
small, we need your help. If there is something you are interested in and we don't currently support that activity, talk
to one of the board members. Maybe we can start something in that area.
Fraternally,
Mel Baker, Lecturing Knight
From the Past Exalted Rulers

our dishwasher a few months back. We are very happy to help
him in making his future brighter.
We are currently starting to plan our events for the coming
year. Our Shrimp Peel, we have normally have in September.
We will have more information in the coming issues.
Also, in September we donate dictionaries to third graders at
St. Patrick’s School, Coastal Christian and Valley View Academy.
This is always a rewarding experience.

From your Tiler
The inaugural ball was a beautiful event. All officers
were installed. Bill, our cook, and his volunteer crew
did a wonderful job on the meal, chicken cordon bleu. A
special thanks to those who decorated the dining room. It was
beautiful. Several awards were presented to officers and volunteers. I was surprised to win the Officer of the Year award. It's nice
to be recognized.
The annual track meet at Cuesta had a large turnout. It is always a
popular event. Several records were broken. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out. And guess what? NO RAIN!
Tony Ulibarri and his crew3249 coordinated the Youth Awards
dinner serving spaghetti and meatballs last month. The food was
very good. It was nice to see these young adults receive their
awards. Jay and Kristi Dupler did a lot of work to prepare for this
event. Many thanks.
We still need volunteers for all kinds of things, and also an organ
player.
Fraternally, Manuel Dias, Tiler

Editors Corner…..A Flash of History
How many of you remember that an Elk on a
mountain is painted on a wall in the lodge?
Please, charter members and those who know,
don’t tell the new elks; Let them guess. The only
picture we found is incomplete in our Clam Tide library.
I hope to find the complete picture by the next issue. It was
painted by two of our members, Halsey Yarrington and one
other member. It would be nice if we could paint it on the
outside wall. We have one donation to have it done. If you
can help painting the Elk, we could use you.

On Tuesday, March 31st, the Oceano/Five Cities Elks Lodge conducted its
annual Public Safety Recognition Dinner where the Lodge expresses its
appreciation to the public safety agencies which protect the Five Cities
Area. Over fifty one members from all eight public safety agencies serving the Five Cites attended the event.
These agencies included the San Luis County Sheriff's Office, Arroyo
Grande Police Department, Grover Beach Police Department, Pismo
Beach Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Five Cities Fire Authority, Cal Fire/Pismo Beach and California State Parks - Oceano Dunes.
The Lodge recognized a member selected by each agency who has demonstrated outstanding service to his/her community.
The honorees included Deputy Jeremy Flores form the Sheriff's Office,
Sergeant Shawn Cosgrove from AGPD, Senior Officer Nelida Aceves from
GBPD, Officer Chris Siglin from PBPD, Officer Amedee Irey from the CHP,
Mary Bassett from the Five Cities Fire Authority, Fire Captain Kirk Petrie
form Cal Fire/Pismo Beach, and Ranger Robyn Mendoza from State Parks
- Oceano Dunes. A citation was read by the Department director from
each agency or his representative, and Exalted Ruler Mike Balster presented each recipient with an award recognizing his/her achievement.
An complimentary prime rib dinner was served to those public safety
members attending the event. In addition to the public safety members,
nine members of the lodge volunteered to assist at the event and other
members attended the event to show their support for our public safety
agencies and their members. The members of the public safety agencies
who attended the event were very appreciative of the Lodge for recognizing them and they very much enjoyed the excellent dinner prepared
by our chef and kitchen crew.
