Heritage Brick, Blanchardstown Antique
All products are manufactured from natural materials and although we strive to provide consistency of colour, variation may occur in the manufacturing process. It is for this reason that we
recommend that products are selected from at least three bales, within each delivery. This will eliminate 'banding'.
As these products contain cement they may suffer from the temporary phenomenon of efflorescence. This is a natural phenomenon and is in no way detrimental to their performance characteristics
and is common in all good quality products with a high cement content. Time should be given for all products to weather in. The best action is to ‘let nature take its course’.
All information contained in this brochure is correct at the time of going to print. We recommend that you contact our sales staff for further information at the design stage of your project
for the most up to date information. Acheson & Glover reserves the right to discontinue products if necessary.
The colours shown in this literature are as accurate as the printing process will allow. Whilst every effort is made to match colours and represent textures, we recommend that colours
and textures are chosen from actual samples of the products.

contractor you can be sure that what you create today will still be enjoyed tomorrow.

Oakland Brick, Glenvale Smooth / Country Cream Smooth
Forget one colour, one finish, one style. Think
contemporary or traditional, modern or avant-garde
and the Oakland range of brick can make it all
possible. Shades of red, russet and brown blend with
buff, cream and yellow to provide a palette versatile
enough for the most demanding taste. Smooth,
textured or old-world finishes add character as well
as style.

Products
Lime Sand Mortars
Acheson & Glover manufactures a range of coloured
lime sand mortars. These products are manufactured
to the highest standards and are available in a wide
range of colours designed to blend or compliment
your chosen Acheson & Glover Brick.
Recently there has been a resurgence in the use
of Lime Sand Mortar as people recognise the
benefits of its use from practical applications
and the technical notes published within the
construction press.
Mortar colour is a critical consideration, and should
be carefully matched to the Acheson & Glover Brick
colour or existing mortar in the case of
refurbishment and extensions. Be aware of the
impact of mortar colour, and take care when
choosing matching, contrasting or neutral colours.
The effect of mortar colours, which accounts for
up to 17% of an area of brickwork, cannot be
over-emphasised.
Once mortar colour has been agreed, give
consideration to the type of mortar joint. The
choice can have an effect on appearance, and it is
important to match existing joint type on
extensions.
This range of coloured mortars has the
following qualities:
• Consistency in all elements of mortar lime,
sand and colour; as a result of quality
controlled production.
• Correct lime content to ensure increased
resistance to water penetration.
• Lime Sand Mortar encourages the self-healing
of hair line cracks.
• Good water retention capabilities resulting
in minimised efflorescence and no unsightly
brick marking.
Prior to delivery an appropriate area should be
prepared before tipping the mortar to prevent
contamination and wastage. On delivery Lime
Sand Mortar should be smoothed over with the
rear of a shovel to provide a skin to prevent
lumping and then covered. Lime Sand Mortar will
deteriorate after a period of time, so it is
recommended that it used within two months of
delivery. Rain action on these mortars can
produce concentrations of free lime which result in
subsequent staining of the brickwork.
A sample service is available together with good
working practice information to ensure that you
get a quality project as the finished result.

Information
Chimney on Outside Wall
Design and detailing to prevent moisture
crossing the cavity are of paramount
importance. The following recommendations
are intended to prevent moisture crossing to
the inner leaf of the wall.
d.p.c. at front apron level
Chimney Stack at Ridge
a Use the correct designation of mortar as
recommended in BS 5628-3: 2001,
Section 5.7. See page 30.
b Take all necessary design precautions to
minimise the effects of movement. See
page 32 relating to movement control.
c Provide weep holes in the outer leaf
immediately beneath the ground level
damp-proof course. Weep holes can be
provided by omitting the mortar in a
perpend joint.
Suitable spacing for weep holes is at
intervals of every 3rd perpend. Clear weep
holes should be provided wherever there
is extensive bridging of the cavity to
safeguard against a build up of water and
thus penetration to the internal skin.
d Ensure the horizontal and vertical dampproof courses are correctly positioned,
adequately long and stepped outwards.
Damp-proof course should extend through
the full thickness of the leaf and
preferably project beyond the face and
should not be bridged by pointing or
render. Failure to lap damp-proof courses
reduce their efficiency. Recommended
minimum lap is 100mm as per
BS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.5.5.
e Ensure chimneys have effective d.p.c. to
eliminate the possibility of water
penetrating the fabric. See right for
effective waterproofing of chimneys.

page 29 to ensure the position of
window/door openings etc. correspond

Effective Weatherproofing for Chimneys
Build them right...Build them watertight!
All buildings for habitation require an effective
damp-proof course (d.p.c.) to eliminate the
possibility of water penetrating the fabric. This is
a well known building requirement, but where
problems sometimes occur is in the provision of
a suitably effective d.p.c. around a chimney.
Unless the d.p.c. is fitted correctly, waterproofing
will be insufficient and moisture is likely to run
down the inside of the chimney.
To prevent this happening it is important to lay
the damp-proof course tray horizontally across
the brick or masonry of the chimney and then
cover with the chimney flashing, as shown in
the illustrations opposite. Shortcuts will result
in problems and unnecessary expense.
Combined with d.p.c. Tray and Flashing
head fixings
These statements and diagrams have been reproduced by
kind permission of the NHBC.
Brick Stretcher Key
To assist with co-ordinating sizes.
But don't just take our word for it! The National
House-building Council (NHBC) remind us of how
to get it right:
"Above the roof, chimney d.p.c.s should link with
flashings. Two d.p.c.s should be used at suitable
levels when the roof is steeply pitched, that is where
the difference in level between the lower and higher
intersection of the chimney with the roof will be
more than 450mm. Lead trays should be protected
with a thick coat of bitumen or bitumen paint
where in contact with mortar. Plastic d.p.c.s are
not suitable."

Fireplaces, Chimneys & Flues (Details of weatherproofing are included in NHBC Appendix 6.8-D).

Product
Information
Mortar Mixes
Mortar must be carefully gauged in the
proportions given in the specification, obtained
from the Architect or our Technical Sales
Department. Too strong a mix may lead to
cracking in the finished work. Too weak a mix
will adversely affect both the strength and
durability of the work. If the sand is dry or
saturated the specified volume should be used.
If it is damp, it may be necessary to increase
the volume to allow for the effects of bulking.
In both instances care must be taken to ensure
correct volumes of cement.
The mortar should be mixed by hand or
machine, in accordance with BS 8000-3: 2001,
Section A.4.2.3, until it has a uniform
colour throughout.
N.B. Shovel mixing of mortar can cause apparent
colour changes in areas of brickwork.
In the majority of cases only durability needs
to be considered when selecting mortar grades
and Table 1 below, based on information on
BS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.7, can assist to
determine the appropriate mortar designation.

A Designation III mortar mix (1 : 1 : 6 cement:lime:sand) is recommended for the majority of
brickwork above sub-floor level constructions.
The final appearance of the brickwork will be influenced by the choice and consistency of the
mortar mix, therefore the specification and use of coloured mortars should be included.

Sound Insulation
Building regulations and their supporting
documents contain provisions which are based on
the mass law, where-by the sound insulation value
increases with increasing density and thickness of
the wall. Acheson & Glover bricks have a slightly
higher density than most other types of bricks and
will therefore provide improved insulation. (Refer
to BS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.10).

Efflorescence
The most common form of efflorescence on brick is a result of Soluble Salt, which is not present in the
Acheson & Glover brick range.
NB. Please note that temporary lime bloom may occur occasionally due to cement being used in this
product. Good Site Practice as per the company’s recommendations will help to prevent this temporary
form of efflorescence.
Lanyon Brick, Westbury
Water Absorption
The outer leaf of most cavity walls is not
impervious. It should be assumed that water will
run down the inner face of such cavities.
See (BS 5628-3: 2001, Section 5.5, Table 12) and (BS
8000-3: 2001 Workmanship on building sites, Part
3: Code of practice for masonry.) Absorption is not
a mandatory requirement in BS EN 771-3: 2003 as
there is no relationship between absorption and
durability in Acheson & Glover Brick. However, as
a guideline for suction rates and other calculations,
it should be noted that Acheson & Glover Brick
exhibit a typical water absorption of less than 8%.
Heritage Brick, Fergustie Mixture, Detail, Cedarwood Buff
Acheson & Glover carries out regular testing on
all its products and they appointed the Industrial
Research & Technology Unit (IRTU) an independent
testing station based in Lisburn Co. Antrim to
devise a method to measure the degree of water
penetration if any in its facing brick.
The purpose was to ascertain if excessive water
penetration was possible through a wall
constructed of Brick manufactured by the
Company, into the wall cavity, directly through the
brick. After extensive testing the Industrial
Research & Technology Unit (IRTU) came to the
following conclusions; "That the bricks did not
exhibit signs of excessive water absorption when
exposed to the test method" and as such, "it would
seem unlikely that significant amounts of water
would penetrate a wall constructed with them
through an actual brick. If such a situation were to
occur, a more likely route for water penetration
would be through the mortar joints".
A copy of the testing method and full report is
available on request, from Acheson & Glover’s
Technical Department.

All brickwork is subject to movement mainly as a
result of temperature and atmospheric changes.

a Where design considerations preclude discrete
panels, incorporate movement control joints to
form the brickwork into panels in which the
length is not greater than twice the height.
As a general rule vertical movement joints to
accommodate horizontal movement should be
provided at typically 6m intervals as per BS
5628-3: 2001, Section 5.4. Our technical Sales
Department will be pleased to offer advice.

Movement Joint
Panel Length
b Generally do not exceed designation III mortar.
If special constructions require stronger mortar,
reduce the distance between movement control
joints. Lime Sand Mortar will help repair small
incidence of movement by "self healing".
The use of Lime Sand Mortar gives a stronger
bond than can be obtained with air entrained
mortars of a similar compressive strength.
This better bond is likely to result in greater
resistance to rain penetration and improved
flexural strength.

Acheson & Glover Brick should be used from at
least three bales to ensure a blend throughout the
wall and eliminate unsightly banding.
Heritage Brick have a smooth arris which is laid to
the building line and a hand made arris which is
placed in the mortar bed. This however is not
critical but does improve the aesthetic quality of
the overall project.
a Do not lay bricks when temperature is at or
below 3°C, or when freezing may occur before
the mortar has hardened. Consideration should
be given to air and wind temperature.
b When building brick in dry / warm conditions
the workability of the mortar should be
increased rather than wetting the actual brick.
In damp weather conditions, a dryer mortar
consistency should be used to help increase
suction on the brick.
e Partial cavity fill under the provisions of the
building regulations a 50mm clear cavity
must be maintained. Where partial or full
cavity insulation is proposed always follow
the manufacturers recommendations.
Fill cavities below ground level with concrete
to 150mm minimum and preferably 225mm
below the ground level d.p.c. in the outer leaf.
This is to stabilise the two leaves and to prevent
the bottom of the wall filling with water.
f
g Clear weep holes should be provided wherever
there is extensive bridging of the cavity.
h Propping and strutting of newly erected work,
particularly gable ends, may be necessary
during high winds. Scaffolding boards should
be turned back to avoid unsightly splashing
of the facing work.
Heritage Brick are manufactured with three
25mm diameter holes per brick a good key
between brick and mortar is easily achieved.
c Ensure that bed joints and perpendicular joints
are fully filled to help prevent rain penetration.
d Cavities and wall ties must be clean and free
from mortar and debris. The wall-ties should
be laid falling towards the outer leaf – never
falling towards the inner leaf. The drip of the
wall-tie (drip down) must be positioned
centrally in the cavity.
See diagram below.
Failure to lap d.p.c. reduces its efficiency.
Recommended minimum lap in d.p.c. 150mm.
Finished areas of wall should be covered as
the work proceeds to avoid splashing and
staining from other works.
i
j
Pre-formed cavity trays with stop ends are
recommended. Trays without stop ends allow
water-throw and subsequent staining of the
brick work.
Sills and copings should project and provide
a suitable drip. Failure to do so throws water
onto the face causing staining and / or
lime bloom.
k Newly built brick work should be cleaned
down and protected at the end of the
working day from rain and frost.

a single skin of brickwork.
Delivery
Acheson & Glover’s own fleet of mechanical
off-loaders deliver to you on time. Should you have
any special requirements please inform us prior
to delivery.
Handling
Bricks should be stored on sound, level ground,
raised clear of wet and muddy areas to prevent
contamination and staining. Storage areas should
be sited close to the points of work to reduce
unnecessary handling and to minimise damage
and waste.
Bricks should be protected from the weather on
site and during construction including the
covering of completed or uncapped brickwork.
Waterproof coverings should allow air circulation.
Materials used in conjunction with facing bricks
should also be stored under protection.
These precautions will reduce the likelihood
of subsequent lime blooming and shrinkage
movement.
Damage and wastage will be minimised by
mechanical methods of distribution to points of
work. Facing bricks should be lifted and placed not
thrown and tipped.
Cleaning
Before using proprietary cleaner please consult
Acheson & Glover for the best method of cleaning
dirty brickwork. Where proprietary cleaners are
specified, they should be used sparingly and
immediately washed off with clean water, otherwise
acid attack could ensue.

Good Site
Practice
Getting the best from
Acheson & Glover Brick
Acheson & Glover Brick should be
protected from the weather on site and
during construction including the covering
of completed but uncapped work.
These precautions will reduce the
likelihood of efflorescence and subsequent
lime blooming.
Storage areas should be sited close to
the points of work to reduce
unnecessary handling and minimise
damage and waste.
Care should be taken to prevent mortar
smearing the surface of the Acheson &
Glover Brick, as cleaning at a later stage
could be difficult and can lead to expensive
and time consuming remedial treatments.
Prevention is better than cure.
For protection of finished brickwork:
We advise against using flush copings,
use saddleback/half round copings,
which incorporates a drip see page 23.
Design the roof with an overhang.
Refer to BS 8000-3: 2001
Workmanship on building sites,
Part 3: Code of practice for masonry.
All mortar joints should be well filled to help
prevent weeping.
Cavities must be kept clean, as dirty cavities
increase the risk of water reaching the inner
leaf and can cause cold bridging.
ensuring
Acheson & Glover Brick should be stored

Scaffolding boards should be turned back
to avoid unsightly splashing of the work.
Do not lay Acheson & Glover Brick when
the temperature is at or below 3ºC or
when freezing may occur before the
mortar has hardened (remember to
consider air and wind temperature).
The appearance of Acheson & Glover
Brick may be affected by failure to
carry out the above precautions.
All products are manufactured from natural materials and although we strive to provide
consistency of colour, variation may occur in the manufacturing process. We recommend
that products are selected from at least three bales, within each delivery.
Health & Safety
Care must be taken when handling / working with individual products to avoid risk of injury
from manual handling, sharp edges, abrasive textures and dust fragments. Inhalation of any
dust produced from aggregates must be avoided. Protective clothing must be worn and is
activity dependant. Further information may be obtained by contacting Acheson & Glover
or the HSENI.
