Michael A. Duncan Jr. Memorial Spelling Bee at Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School May 5, 2015 Dear Parents, We are happy to host our annual spelling bee championship open to interested first through sixth grade students. Student Council hosts this event in memory of Michael A. Duncan, Jr., a former Emerson student, council representative, and spelling bee finalist. Attached is the list of words that will be included in the Spelling Bee for your child’s grade. He or she should practice the spelling words for their grade, as well as the next grade’s, to prepare for the bee. We will be posting the entire spelling list on our website at http://emerson.btsd.us. Each teacher will conduct a classroom spelling bee to determine classroom finalists by May 26th. The six finalists per grade will then compete in our spelling bee championship on June 1st and 2nd. June 1st 5th grade: 2nd grade: 4th grade: 9:30 10:15 11:30 June 2nd 1st grade: 6th grade: 3rd grade: 9:30 10:30 11:30 Spelling bee contestants will be given a word by their teachers, and the word will be used in a sentence and repeated. Contestants must say the word, spell the word, and say the word again. If they make a mistake, they may ask to start again but should not repeat the word until they are done. Any capitalizations, spaces, or hyphens in words must be stated. First place champions will receive a trophy. Second and third place winners will receive a medallion. The other finalists will receive pins. Parents are welcome to attend their child’s Grade Level Championship.
