Encore talks to Jerry Mitchell, the Director and Choreographer of KINKY BOOTS
Encore Tickets interviewed Jerry Mitchell, the Director and Choreographer of Kinky Boots.
We found out how he feels about the spectacular transfer of the show to the West End, what
it’s like working with Cyndi Lauper, and why groups should come and see KINKY BOOTS.
Encore Tickets (E): Premiering on
Broadway in April 2013 and having
received a record breaking 13 Tony Award
nominations, the show won six awards
including those for Best Musical and Best
Score. How do you feel about KINKY
BOOTS now transferring to London’s West
End this August?
JM: All those shows are important to me,
and KINKY BOOTS has a similar and
universal appeal, I think, perhaps because
of the audience’s investment in these
characters which we have seen in the US
productions. And that’s what I love about the
show, you take the journey with them. I really
do think you do. I mean, when I think back
to Hairspray and working on that show and
the collaboration and what we created and
how we created it there’s a lot of similarities
going on with KINKY BOOTS – not with
just the show itself, but with the way the
audiences are responding to it. Nobody’s
running up the aisle to get to their train or
get to their car. They don’t leave! They’re
standing up, cheering, dancing and singing
with Don and Trish and Charlie and Lola and
they don’t want to leave the theatre until
those people leave the stage! That’s sort of
a magical moment. And then, when they do
walk out of the theatre, you know, they’re all
abuzz. That’s the kind of joy that is rare in a
musical.
E: KINKY BOOTS features an original
score by music icon Cyndi Lauper and
is set to be the biggest party in the West
to the West End this August!
Based on the 2005 film of the same name, which in turn
was inspired by a remarkable true story, KINKY BOOTS
tells of a struggling British shoe factory whose fortunes
begin to turn when it begins to make custom footwear
for drag queens.
Jerry Mitchell (JM): I am delighted to see this
big-spirited musical arrive in London. KINKY
BOOTS is very close to my heart, and I am
really looking forward to staging it here with
a British cast.
E: Your other credits include Hairspray,
Legally Blonde and Dirty Rotten
Scoundrels, do you think KINKY BOOTS
will appeal to a similar demographic as
these shows?
KINKY BOOTS transfers
Complete with larger than life characters, this unique musical explodes onto the
stage resulting in a high voltage performance that will delight audiences young
and old.
End. What’s your favourite Cyndi Lauper
hit and what was it like working with her?
JM: When Harvey and I were on the search
for a composer, we both landed on Cyndi
– which was a suggestion from Harvey’s
brother, actually. And I had worked with Cyn
in the past, Harvey had worked with Cyn and
we gave her a couple of scenes and she wrote
Not My Father’s Son and The Most Beautiful
Thing in the World. Those were the first two
songs she gave us. And I said, “this is exactly
what I was hoping someone would write.” So
that was it.
Our score feels like a Cyndi Lauper score.
It’s infectious. It’s pop-infused, and yet it’s
very theatrical and tells great stories. Cyndi
was eager to learn the craft. She didn’t come
into the process thinking she was just going to
write what she wrote. She wanted to write
for the theatre. And she wanted to bring her
knowledge of pop music, but yet she also
wanted to learn to tell stories. And she was
led by Harvey and myself – hopefully, we were
there to help guide her. I think she would say
that. And, you know, we had an amazing
collaboration, all three of us. This was a very,
very, very comfortable collaboration.
E: What are the biggest challenges the
show presents?
JM: Casting the entire company! Everyone
matters in this show. Everyone is an individual
you’ll see and that’s what makes it so special.
E: For groups who are not familiar with the
show, what would you say is most appealing
about KINKY BOOTS?
JM: When I was considering the material
sent to me by the co-producers, I watched
the film of KINKY BOOTS, and I got very
emotionally caught up in the story of the
fathers and the sons. And, particularly, that
scene in the bathroom, where Charlie and
Lola finally come together and realise they’re
on common ground. And I thought, “well
that to me is the nucleus of something really
strong,” because it’s a universal idea for us:
how do we measure up in our fathers’ eyes?
I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t go
through some sort of realization, in their life,
as becoming an adult, how you measured up
in your father’s eyes, for better or for worse.
And that has real resonance. And I wanted to
tell that story.
E: Finally, why should audiences come to
see the show from August this year at the
Adelphi theatre?
JM: Because it’s great fun and life-affirming,
and you leave the theatre feeling uplifted and
full of joy.
This feel-good musical not only features an uplifting score, but combines a
hilarious book by Harvey Fierstein. and show stopping choreography by Jerry
Mitchell. Having received a record breaking 13 Tony Award nominations, the
show won six awards including those for Best Musical and Best Original Score.
The musical has been one of Broadway’s best selling shows for the past two
years, and makes a welcome transfer to London’s West End.

How long have you been at Encore
Tickets, and in what capacity?
I joined Encore Tickets in July 2013
as UK Sales Manager after more
than 10 years experience in the
theatre industry. I look after the
Domestic Group and Trade
segment.
What do you enjoy
most about your role?
I love dealing with theatre
shows as the main “selling
point”, as my role gives
me a lot of opportunities to
be creative, particularly when
devising new packages. I also enjoy
working with different clients who
look after various sectors of this
industry, including FIT’S, as previously
I was restricted to only the groups
category. This job also gives me an
opportunity to travel often, which I
quite enjoy, particularly when there’s
an Award to win!
Last, but not least, I have a wonderful
team of account handlers in Groups
who make me laugh even in the most
demanding of times.
What do you think is/are this year’s
best entertainment products?
Show-wise I think KINKY BOOTS
is going to be a hit and I am very
much looking forward to seeing it. I
Sergio Cicalo
UK Trade Sales Manager
don’t know what to expect as I didn’t
know much about it until it became a
Broadway hit, but the music being by
Cyndi Lauper is enough to convince
me it will be a huge success. Beautiful
has also been a pleasant surprise
for me. With attractions,
there’s no doubt I will be
paying a visit to SHREK’S
ADVENTURE
this
summer! I think London
has gained yet again
another classic, unmissable
attraction.
What is your favourite
London show, and landmark
attraction?
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
has to be my favourite show, it’s the
very first musical I saw when I moved
to London, I simply love the music
and the story, even with its “doomed”
ending.
As regard attractions it has to be
the TOWER OF LONDON, I love
history and I never get tired of going
there and play “who killed the princes
in the tower” game!
What are your top tips to group
bookers?
Get your tickets as early as you can,
use all the support you get from your
account handlers and go see as many
shows as you can!

BEAUTIFUL – now booking into February 2016!
THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE OF A
MUSIC ICON. Carole King,
the chart-topping music
legend, was an ordinary girl
with an extraordinary talent.
Roald Dahl’s deliciously dark tale of young Charlie
Bucket and the mysterious confectioner Willy
Wonka has captivated the world for 50 years.
Featuring ingenious stagecraft, the wonder of the
original story comes spectacularly to life in a gigantic
‘lavish feast of a musical’ (The Guardian) at the
Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
When Charlie wins a golden ticket to the weird and
wonderful Wonka Chocolate Factory, it’s the chance
of a lifetime to feast on the sweets he’s always
dreamed of. But beyond the gates astonishment
awaits, as down the sugary corridors and amongst
the incredible edible delights, the five lucky winners
discover not everything is as sweet as it seems.
Along the way, she became one of the most successful
solo acts in popular music history, and wrote the
soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics
such as You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman,
Take Good Care of my Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So
Far Away, It Might As Well Rain Until September, Up
on the Roof, and Locomotion.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
She fought her way into the record industry as a
teenager and sold her first hit, Will You Love Me
Tomorrow, when she was just seventeen. By the
time she was twenty she was writing number
ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including
the Drifters, the Shirelles, Aretha Franklin and the
Monkees. But her greatest challenge was to find her
own voice and finally step into the spotlight.

West End musical, directed by Academy Award®

Encore talks to MISS SAIGON’s Jon Jon Briones
Encore Tickets caught up with Jon Jon Briones who plays The Engineer in
the legendary musical MISS SAIGON. We found out how he feels about
his recent Olivier Award nomination, why the show is still so relevant
today and why groups should come and see one of the most phenomenally
successful musicals in history.
“It’s like the show has a magic,” he says
about the current incarnation of MISS
SAIGON, “Even in 1989, when it first
opened, the music was ahead of its time.
It’s not like any other musical you’ve
ever seen. It’s talking about a serious
subject matter. Obviously, the love story
is there, but the backdrop is war and
unfortunately we are still surrounded by
wars everywhere. People are still being
displaced and families are still being torn
apart.”
interpretation: “Growing up in a very poor
part of the Philippines, I was constantly
confronted with people who struggled
through life - people who were completely
desperate. As an actor, these first hand
experiences have proven to be vital in
getting the character’s desperation across
to the audience every night.”
He goes on to divulge a conversation
he had with Prince William afterwards:
“I was quite nervous because I wasn’t
sure if we were allowed to talk to them
or if we had to wait to be spoken to,
but luckily Prince William started a
conversation with me. I told him that I
had had the good fortune to be in the
presence of his mother with the original
London cast of MISS SAIGON.
Princess Diana had watched the show
and talked to the cast afterwards and
told us that, after watching what the
Vietnamese children had to endure,
she was so grateful that her two little
ones were safely tucked up in bed. I think
William was quite moved by that. It was a
special moment.”
Fast forward about forty years later and we
see a true ‘rags-to-riches’ story play out, as
Jon Jon finds himself performing alongside
his fellow cast members before the Duke
and Duchess of Cambridge at last year’s
Royal Variety Performance. Not many
actors can say they have writhed around
in a sexual manner on top of a car bonnet
in front of royalty, after all. He recalls:
In closing, Jon Jon heartily encouraged
anyone who has not yet seen MISS
SAIGON in its current re-imagining to
head down to the Prince Edward Theatre
to see him “scheming for his life” eight
shows a week and then took his leave to
visit the physiotherapist. “If I’m working,
I’m in pain,” he confesses, “But man, it is
worth it!”
Jon Jon also credits the brand new set
as a good reason to re-visit the show
and has been astounded with recent
audience reactions. “Even kids who
were not born yet when it first opened
- and even when it closed - have
totally embraced the storytelling they
witness before them on the stage. It is
wonderful to see how much the show
transcends generations.”
He has played The Engineer now in the
West End premiere of MISS SAIGON,
in Germany, on an Asian tour, on a UK
tour, in his native Philippines and now
once again in the West End revival, yet it
is a role that he still relishes. In terms of
his inspiration for building the character,
he tells me: “It’s always good to steal...
in acting!” (He quickly adds and laughs at
the thought of him encouraging criminal
activity), “and who better to steal from
than Jonathan Pryce, who originated the
role in the West End? That man can act!”
He goes on, however, to describe how
his own upbringing influenced his own
“We weren’t sure what we were going
to do. There were certain people there
before that performance who kept asking
if we could tone certain parts of it down
or change the words here and there in
order to make it more ‘royal-friendly.’
But we had to stay true to the show. I
had never performed in a starring role in
front of royalty before, so it was such a
tremendous evening for me.”
MISS SAIGON
the heat is on!
Cameron
Mackintosh’s
acclaimed new
production has
made its highly
anticipated return
to the West End.
Since MISS SAIGON’s sensational record-breaking run at London’s Theatre
Royal Drury Lane 25 years ago, it has played in 300 cities in 15 different languages,
winning awards around the world. This epic love story tells the tragic tale of
young bar girl Kim, orphaned by war, who falls in love with an American GI called
Chris - but their lives are torn apart by the fall of Saigon.

THE COMMITMENTS is ‘unstoppable fun.
A big-hearted, big night out!’ (The Times)
‘London’s five-star smash-hit musical’ (James Brown) continues to play to packed houses at the
iconic Palace Theatre, garnering rave reviews and proving to be Theatreland’s hottest ticket!
A fabulous fun night out for all the family featuring over 20 of the greatest soul classics including:
Night Train, Try A Little Tenderness, River Deep, Mountain High, In The Midnight Hour, Papa Was A
Rolling Stone, Save Me, Mustang Sally, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Thin Line Between Love
and Hate, Reach Out, Uptight, Knock On Wood, I Can’t Turn You Loose AND MANY MORE.
The show has been adapted from the novel by Booker prize winning author Roddy
Doyle himself and is directed by award winning Jamie Lloyd (Macbeth & The Ruling
Class starring James McAvoy and Richard III starring Martin Freeman)
THE COMMITMENTS is the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working class music
fan, who shapes an unlikely bunch of amateur musicians and friends into an amazing
live act, the finest soul band Dublin has ever produced. The show follows the journey
of two members of a frustrated synthesizer band - the opening scene we find them
playing but being ignored in a shop window - who turn to Jimmy, the local music
expert, for help. Placing a classified advert in a music paper, Jimmy auditions a number
of wannabes before finalising the new line up who he names The Commitments.
The humour kicks in as the band get to know each other and their instruments, and
proceed through early rehearsals for their first gig. Just as they improve and begin to
get a name for themselves they combust. The backing singers are all getting off with
the middle aged horn legend, the singer has entered Eurovision and the saxophone
player has dangerous leaning towards a jazz career.

Encore talks to Beverley Knight, currently starring in MEMPHIS THE MUSICAL
Encore Tickets interviewed Beverley Knight who plays Felicia in the Olivier
Award-winning musical MEMPHIS. We found out how she feels about her
role in the show, and why groups should come and see the production that
was voted ‘Best New Musical’ in the 2015 Whatsonstage Awards.
Encore Tickets (E): Can you tell us about
a Day in the Life of Beverley Knight
preparing for evening performance of
MEMPHIS?
BK: What Felicia comes up against is her
role in the world as not just a black woman
in the 50’s, but a black woman in the South
in the 50’s, she is at the very bottom of the
social strata in America but because she’s
so determined to succeed she finds her
own way to fight back, and it’s through this
fantastic music emerging called rock ‘n’ roll,
which she has actually been singing her whole
life as ‘negro blues’ but just sped up, and that’s
what she clings on to with both hands.
Beverley Knight (BK): Usually I would have
a promotion or some kind of interview in
the day, but I try to use my daytime to chill
and not talk too much, which is impossible
because I’m a chatterbox!
I always go to the gym in the morning which
wakes everything including my voice up, and
you’ve got to be really fit and healthy to do
theatre night after night. Once I’m at the
theatre the first thing I do is put the kettle on
for a nice herbal tea. Then I’ll do my own
gentle warm up before the official warm up,
and often whilst I’m doing my gentle warm up
I start to braid my hair to put under the wig.
Once the warm up has finished then it’s into
my wig, costume, and make up and go!
E: Inspired by true events from the
underground dance clubs of 1950s
Memphis, Tennessee, MEMPHIS follows
the fame and forbidden love of a radio DJ
who wants to change the world and a club
singer who is ready for her big break. What
attracted you to want to be involved in the
show?
BK: I loved the idea and concept when it was
first pitched to me, about the story of rock
‘n’ roll from its very beginnings, because we
always hear about rock ‘n’ roll when it hit the
mainstream rather than beforehand. When
I got the script and I read the story through
I absolutely adored Felicia’s fighting spirit, I
loved that she was bold enough to follow her
dream even though it could have cost her her
liberty. I also loved Huey and thought he was
kooky and crazy but so loveable at the same
time.
E: You’re over six months into the run now,
how long do you find it takes to really settle
into a role?
E: You play Felicia, the electrifying
nightclub singer, and whilst the show is
absolutely full of soul and rock ‘n’ roll, it
also explores the prejudice associated
with an interracial relationship in 1950s
Memphis. What kind of a woman is Felicia
and how did you prepare yourself to play
this role?
BK: Felicia is a dreamer, but she’s a dreamer
with fight! She’s so driven and determined
and I think she realized that the gifts she has is
the ticket out of the oppression under which
she lives. Fortunately I knew a lot about the
history of Memphis, from slavery right up until
the civil rights movement, but I only knew it in
my head, so getting on the plane and visiting
Memphis was the best preparation ever. I
got to meet so many real life Felicia’s and
their daughters and granddaughters, it was
incredible.
E: What are the biggest challenges the
show presents, and your role in particular?
BK: With this role if I’m perfectly honest it
felt familiar after a couple of weeks, there was
something very easy and natural about taking
on this role and for it to get into my bones,
very quickly I adjusted to it.
E: You’re performing alongside some
extremely talented actors in this
production. What’s it like working with
Killian Donnelly?
BK: Awwwww I love my Killian! He’s my
little emerald chicken, that’s what I call him.
He is just an uber uber talented person and
I knew he was Huey when he walked in the
audition, I knew before he’d even sung a note
he was Huey, and then he sung and the deal
was sealed!
E: Finally, why should audiences come to
see MEMPHIS?
BK: MEMPHIS has warmth that will pull
you in, it’s very very funny. When you read
about the subject matter you think it might
be quite serious, but it’s completely joyous,
hilarious and the songs and choreography are
incredible. It’s a really fantastic night out with
something for everybody!
MEMPHIS
Nominated for nine Olivier Awards MEMPHIS is
London’s hottest destination!
In the underground nightclubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, the soul of a new
era is dawning as the first incredible sounds of rock ‘n’ roll, blues and gospel are
emerging into the mainstream. Falling in love with a beautiful club singer, one
young man’s vision to bring her voice and her music out of the clubs and onto
the airwaves of America will fly in the face of cultural divides and spark a music
revolution that will shake the world.

ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL
LONDON IN HIGH DEFINITION
A Cathedral dedicated to St Paul has overlooked the City
of London since 604AD, a constant reminder to this great
commercial centre of the importance of the spiritual side of life.
As London’s highest viewing platform at the top of Western
Europe’s tallest building, The Shard is the only place to take in
over 1,000 years of the capital’s history all at once.
The current Cathedral – the fourth to occupy this site – was designed by the court architect Sir Christopher
