A message from EDAC president
An overall “snap shot” shows EDAC in good shape- financial stability, programming, community and
volunteer support. Once again, it was a busy year with various events/activities like Music by the River,
classical concerts, lectures/workshop, public art and Arts Festival.
EDAC has continued to strengthen its communication within the Board and its members. Annual
Planning has helped to shape a shared vision about who we are and where we are going. Staying
relevant means celebrating our strengths, but it also being aware of areas for improvement. The everpopular “members only socials” have been well attended. The informal setting inspires an exchange of
ideas to enhance the local arts scene.
EDAC has reached out to collaborate with other organizations. Support of the Courtyard Gallery in
its 1st year and Runaway Moon Theatre in a funding application for The Calendario Project were
appreciated. At the 2013 Arts Festival, EDAC partnered with the Splatsin Tsm7aksaltn Teaching
Centre Society in celebration of “A Taste of Splatsin Culture.”
To promote the arts, EDAC offers funding. Bursaries and grants, for example, were given to the Grindrod
Musik Festival, Enderby Community Christmas Committee and the Clay Club at MV Beattie Elementary.
Annual bursaries were awarded at AL Fortune and Pleasant Valley Secondary Schools. EDAC established
the new Alyson Witts Leadership award to a graduate of AL Fortune. Sponsorships were given to three
children to attend an arts camp. Grants are available upon request to established and emerging artists
and organizations in support of the arts.
It is an honour and exciting to be part of this organization. EDAC continues to grow and now has over
120 members of all types- individuals, community groups and local businesses The Enderby and District
Arts Council enriches our community! That is only possible through wide community support and
participation. So, thank you to the City of Enderby, Area F, membership, volunteers and hard-working
Board members.

Our new Board Members
Sue Weiss moved to Enderby in
the fall of 2009 with her husband
Ron from Beaverlodge, Alberta
where they grain-farmed and
raised their three children. They
had an opportunity to rent their
land out and while camping in
the area that summer, they drove
through Enderby and out to Mabel Lake. Sue immediately felt the
friendliness and artistic creativity of the town and area, and she
and Ron are very happy to have
re-located to Enderby.
Before their move, Sue was the
administrator for the Beaverlodge
Cultural Centre and has always
enjoyed all forms of the arts. Sue
says she is looking forward to being a director and working together with the members of EDAC.
After working and travelling
around the world, Jean Koenig
made a full circle and came back
home to Enderby, eleven years
ago. Most of her business life involved the retail world, owning two
Fabricland stores and a clothing
store and then, when coming back
to Enderby, a Curves gym. Now,
when (so she says) she should
be retiring, Jean is working for
her brother at The Falling Coconut on Old Vernon Street next to
Enderby Autobody. When she’s
not working she enjoys travelling,
Bali being her favorite destination,

golfing, reading, repurposing furniture, being with friends and family and dabbling in artistic endeavours, the latest being Zentangle – a
glorified word for doodling.
Jean says she is honoured to be

and hopes she can fill the big shoes
that were left for her.
After graduating from Abbotsford

Fultz enrolled at Douglas College
taking Fine Arts History, Drawing, Painting, and English courses,
transferring to study at the U.B.C.
Faculty of Education. He left University in 1975 to take a sabbatical

in the truss industry, which turned
into a thirty-eight year career. “I
found art served me well with
truss design, how to create ‘flow’
for bracing, and web alignment,
design a strong and flexible product,” Steve said.
Steve has also been a semi-professional musician, playing in several
bands through the 80’, 90’s, and
2000’s on bass and guitar. He says
he’s sure he will find being a director on the Arts Council to be a challenging experience, and he looks
forward to using his background
in music to help out on the Music
by the River Committee.

– Erin Baker
President Karen Rohats , on behalf of EDAC
Tony Antoine. Member of the Splatsin community
and respected artist. Tony was an organizer of the
Silent Auction for The Taste of Splatsin Culture at
the 2013 Enderby Arts Festival.
Lisa Sterritt. As a representative of the Splatsin
Tsm7akasaltyn Teaching Centre Society, Lisa was
the liasion person coordinating the Splatsin’s involvement with the 2013 Arts Festival.
Jeanette Martin. The gracious and smiling face
of EDAC. Jeanette was at every Music by the River
with her basket collecting donations. Jeanette was
the welcoming committee of the Artisans Market
at the Arts Festival. Jeanette represented EDAC
on many community committees and is described
as the “perfect hostess”. Jeanette’s smile and good
heart will be missed.
Karen Desimone. Karen, more than any other, put
her stamp on EDAC. Karen was a Board member
since 1999 and was elected President in 2002, serving for two years. Karen was editor of the EDAC
magazine from 2001 to 2010 managing three issues
a year. Karen started the Artisans Market in 2005.
She coordinated EDAC’s recent 20th Anniversary
Celebration and was the inspiration for the popular
Shoe-In at the 2012 Arts Festival. More recently,
Karen served as Chair of the Public Art Committee. The community will still experience Karen’s
enthusiasm through her art and involvement in the
Courtyard Gallery.
Gwen Baldwin. Gwen has resigned as Treasurer
but will be continuing as a Board member. Gwen
was elected Treasurer in 2006. She was membership secretary for many years and began EDAC’s
website. Gwen attended EDAC events managing
the collection of money, ticket sales and banking.
Gwen brought a calm efficiency, and was out-ofsight organizer, but was so crucial to EDAC operating on an ethical level.
“Crazy Hair Day” is the title grade seven
Grindrod student Erin Baker gave to this interesting portrait. “Crazy Hair Day” was created in crayon and watercolour and was one of
over 100 pieces of young artist work that was
on display at the Courtyard Gallery. The Enderby & District Arts Council, in partnership
with the Enderby Artists’ Initiative, presented
“A Student Art Show.” The show featured art
work of young artists ages eight to eighteen.

Tribute to Karen Desimone

The tribute to Karen Desimone at the AGM opened a floodgate of memories. Karen did not do all new project herself,
but she had the ability to persuade board members until
someone finally got on the job, even if that persuasion took
months. She was the president who, knowing we were working to being considered for taxpayer-funding, realized the
need to do as the BC Arts Council instructed, and she began
to shape EDAC from being an umbrella organization giving
out public money to being the desired model of a community arts council which does things for themselves, as well
as supporting other organizations and artists.
Karen persuaded me to write monthly Artscene columns for
The North Valley Echo and the Armstrong Advertiser to put
the work of EDAC out into the community and make it relevant to a wider audience. She relentlessly pushed me (over
18 months) to start Music by the River. Karen was forever
working towards investigate events for overlooked populations. I remember one foray into Art for Health and her 2006
push for EDAC to declare that as “the year of the emerging
artist.” We did a slew of youth-oriented programming (not
always successful, but that is not the point).
It was Karen, as editor of three issues a year of the EDAC
magazine, who increased it from 8 to 12 to 16 pages and from
black and white to colour. It was she who broke ground to
organize the first Enderby Art Walk, and then urged me to
take it over and widen it to an open art gallery/workshop
event. I have so many of these stories- especially the pen of
alpacas at the first Artisans Market in the field- but will leave
you with a typical off-the-cuff blurted -out sentence of hers,
to the Community Round Table in February 2006 when we
were all asked for contributions to a Wish List to improve
our community, and Karen said- “we need more random
acts of beauty.”

Annual Photo
Contest
he Enderby & District Arts Council
is sponsoring its annual Snapshots and Shutterbugs photo contest
to be held on July 26
as part of the Enderby
& District Arts festival. Photos will be
judged on July 25th
and displayed at the
Courtyard Gallery on
July 26th. It is open to
anyone who likes taking pictures and costs
nothing to enter.
Due to the increasing
popularity of the contest, every year has attracted more entries,
so this year organizers
are restricting both
size of photographs
and quantity.
Only
4x6 or 5x7 photos
will be accepted, and
only two per category.
There simply is no
room to display larger.
Of course, this will
emphasize the “snapshots” idea of the contest and, hopefully, put
everyone on a more
even competitive foot.
Also two new categories which were tried
last year (“digital workshop” & “catch-all”
have been combined
to one category called
“catch-all.” The other
categories of Wildlife,
Pets, People (doing
things), Portrait, Flowers & Gardens, Insects
& Spiders, Enderby
& District, Where in
the world, remain the
same. Another small
change is that your
photos must be entered the day before
the judging – that is,
by July 24 at 4pm. Like
last year, you can find
entry forms and category descriptions at
the Courtyard Gallery
on Belvedere Street in
Enderby (Tues - Sat,
10am - 4pm). Starting
July 1st, the Gallery is
open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.
Like previous years
there will be coveted
ribbons for first, second and third place in
each category, along
with
Honourable
Mentions, as well as
Best in Show and the
prestigious “People’s
Choice Award.” Lots
of time to enter, but
time is now to start
choosing your photos
and get out and shoot
some more.

Exhibits

The Enderby & District
Museum created a special display about mining
in the district for the Gold Panning Championship event held in Enderby from May 16th to
18th. For three days the museum welcomed
visitors who wanted to learn about mining in
the area and the history of Enderby.
The Enderby Drill Hall is celebrating its
100th anniversary this year, and the museum
is creating a photo exhibit to display at the
Drill Hall for the anniversary celebrations in
June.
Both the mining and the Drill Hall exhibits
will be on display at the museum for the summer.
July will be a busy month as well, as the museum will be offering special tours for the
Girl Guides while they are in town for their
BC Rendezvous from July 18th to 26th.
Museum volunteers will dress in historical
costumes and stroll around downtown Enderby for the annual Arts Festival on July 26th.
This summer the museum is expanding the
display at the “Museum in the Park”, aka the
“Musebo”, in Barnes’ Park. Some larger artifacts will be added to the existing collection,
while some smaller ones will be displayed in
new cases that are being installed.

is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon
to 4:00 pm until the end of May, and then from
10:00 am to 4:00 pm throughout the summer.

treal musicians, Sylvia Bruns on piano, her husband Gerald
Morin on cello, and their 14 year old daughter, Celia, on
violin. This concert will be a fundraiser for EDAC's designated Grand Piano Fund. As they have done several times
in the past, Sylvia and Gerald are donating their time and
talents. We appreciate this very much, and look forward
to another excellent evening of music. $20 for adults and
seniors, $10 for students & those under 18. Tickets at the

The Enderby & District Arts Council was awarded
$15,315. from the British Columbia Arts Council to assist
with operating activities for 2014. .Increased funding from
Enderby City Council made a significant difference with
matched funds. Thank you City Council! The optional
Annual Performance which requires a comprehensive
critique of the previous year’s activities merited $9,500.
(max. $10,000.) The BC Arts Council has high regard for
the Enderby & District Arts Council noting that “ success
is not tied to space ownership or physical plant but rather
to community connectedness.”
Many people may only be familiar with the many activities
that The Enderby & District Arts Council sponsors like
Music by the River, indoor concerts, lectures/workshops,
Enderby Arts Festival, symbol signs and public art. Lesser
known is that last year, EDAC gave out over $7,000. in bursaries and grants in support of the arts. Many community
organizations benefitted like the Courtyard Gallery, Grindrod Players, Grindrod Musik Festival, Runaway Moon
Theatre to name a few. There were also supported art
projects at MV Beattie Elementary. Annually, EDAC offers two bursaries to graduates from AL Fortune Secondary. Grants are available upon request to individuals, organizations, emerging and established artists for an arts
related project or classes.
At the 2014 AGM, guest speaker Louise Wallace, inspired
us with her presentation “Art is for Everyone.” Louise
highlighted how the arts contribute to the vibrancy and
well being of a community. Research indicates that every
dollar spent on the arts, results in
$1.30 in economic
spin-off.
All of the work that the Enderby & District Arts Council
engages in is only possible through community participation. A huge THANK YOU to the community in appreciation of its ongoing support and involvement.

The story follows the journey
of a young person in modern
day, returning home to discover never before learned
tribal memories, new experiences, laughter, heartache and
surprise! Written and directed
by Splatsin historian Rosalind
Williams, Cathy Stubington of
Runaway Moon and VancouveriteTheatre Director/playwright
James Fagan Tait, the play will
take the players and audience
on a journey into the heart and
soul of Splatsin tradition, travelling from ancient to contemporary storytime.
Performers of all ages will take
part in the performance and in
the making of costumes, puppets and other elements created
for the sharing of the stories.

Porter Johnson Awarded Grant
The EDAC board of directors is pleased to announce
that the funds raised at the 2012 Arts Festival “Shoe
– In” event have been awarded to Mara resident Porter Johnson. The $265 raised at this event had been
topped up to $300 and made available to any resident
of Enderby and District to further their artistic endeavours. Porter, a very talented 12 year old, says “I love
the arts and I love to entertain”. He enjoys crafts, painting and guitar and performs in the “Sadok Ukrainian
Dance Ensemble”. Porter plans to use this award to
take classical singing lessons.
About the Courtyard Gallery

tive is a group comprised of
25 gallery artists who operate
the artist-run “Courtyard Gallery” as a non-profit Organization (NPO), and is organized for
promoting the Arts in the community, providing opportunities
for workshops and exhibitions,
and fostering the appreciation
and enjoyment of the visual arts
for youth and adults in Enderby
and the surrounding district.
The gallery exhibits the work
of artists and artisans, ranging
in work from paintings, sculptures, pottery, jewellery, carvings, fabric artist’s work. The
work of consignment artists is
included in these exhibitions.
There are also approximately
fifty associate members who
support the initiative through a
yearly membership fee.
Gallery revenues are generated
through monthly artists’ fees,
art sale commissions, gallery
rental income, events, exhibitions and fundraisers, private
sponsorships and donations.
The Executive is comprised
of Tatianna O’Donnell, Chair;
Marg Froess, Secretary and Virginia Halper, Treasurer. There
are also four Directors on the
Executive: Neil Fidler, Diane
Larsen, Frank O’Donnell and

First year at the
Courtyard Gallery

n April 25, 2013, Courtyard Gallery hosted a galaO
opening event in Enderby. Over 300 people supported the Initiative by coming to this event and May-
or Cyr cut the ribbon for the opening ceremony. The
event was covered in last year’s “Inside the Arts” and
in local media. Since the opening last April 25, 2013,
The Gallery has hosted an Acrylic Painting workshop in the Gallery during Arts and Culture week,
and opened its doors to the Enderby and District Arts
Council’s Annual Snapshots & Shutterbugs contest &
exhibition during the Enderby Arts Festival. During
the summer artists represented Courtyard Gallery
at the Kingfisher Market during many of the market
days in the summer, and in September Gallery Artists represented Courtyard Gallery at the 2013 Lake
Country Artwalk in Winfield. In November the Gallery implemented a Point of Sale Debit/Credit System.
From November 14, 2013 – January 8, 2014 the Gallery hosted its First Annual “Little Treasures” Exhibition, and from January 14 – February 15, 2014 held its
First Annual Associate Members’ Exhibition. During
the winter, the Artists’ Initiative was nominated for
an Okanagan Arts Award and I attended the black-tie
event in Kelowna. While the Gallery did not win, I felt
honoured that the work of the Artists’ Initiative was
recognized and valued outside of our community.
From April 12 to April 22 the Gallery hosted a showcase of student art, art from young artists age 8 – 18
which proved some interesting and amazing work.
Meanwhile the city councilors and mayor each teamed
up with a Gallery artist and each produced a work of
art which was auctioned off at a gala party held on our
first anniversary, April 25th, at the Legion. The auction raised another $3000 for the Gallery to continue
to support and showcase emerging local artists.
In other community support, the Courtyard Gallery
donated gift certificates to the Lions Christmas Auction, Enderby Chamber AGM Door Prizes, and the local Spot George Clooney contest.

5th Annual Enderby
SATURDAY, JULY 26, 2014
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This year, Enderby celebrates the Fifth Annual Enderby Arts
Festival. This increasingly popular event is an all-day free familyfriendly street festival of markets, music and art. It had its origins in 2006 when EDAC put on a small (about a dozen vendors)
Artisan Market in the field at the east end of Mill St. This was
organized by Karen Desimone as an add-on to the then Summer
Mardi Gras and the Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Tube
Float.
The next year, the market moved to the Maude St parking lot and
stayed there continuing to expand until, two years after spreading
out on to Mill St, it moved onto Cliff Ave and Belvedere Streets.
When the Chamber of Commerce bowed out of putting on River
Activities after 2009, the Enderby and District Arts Council, to
add to the appeal of the market, stepped in to put on the first Arts
Festival in July 2010.
Downtown Enderby fills with visitors looking to take in the sights,
sounds and experience of the Festival. The outdoor Artisan Market has over 40 vendors offering a wide variety of handcrafted
items for sale. In the centre of everything is the Entertainment
Stage with all day music and activities. Headline acts this year
include drum circle leader David Thiaw, bands “Transplant” and
“Sabrina Weeks and Swing Cat Bounce”.
On Belvedere Street the Courtyard Gallery hosts the annual
Snapshots and Shutterbugs Photo Contest. In the courtyardvarious artists will show and demonstrate their work.
New this year is the family fun zone in Belvidere Park being put
on by the Enderby and District Community Resource Centre featuring face painting, art stations, games and entertainment. The
perfect place for families to spend some time playing together or
having a picnic by the river.
A Food Court on Cliff Ave, the Lions Pancake Breakfast on Belvedere Street and Enderby's restaurants will help round out the
experience.

Enderby Artists’ Initiative nominated for OAA
For the first time, due to increasing numbers of nominees, the
Okanagan Arts Award Committee shortlisted nominees, and
the Courtyard Gallery/Artists
Initiative made the short list.
The adjudication process completed the review of all nominations for the Okanagan Arts
Awards, and the Courtyard Gallery got the nod in the category
of Central Okanagan Foundation Arts Association Award,
which was held on March 22,
2014.
A different process was needed
this year because of a number
of changes. Firstly, the South
Okanagan created a regional
arts awards program, and submitted their recipients to the
Okanagan Arts Awards. Also, a
large number of nominees were
received in many of the 13 categories. As a result, the adjudication process became a two-step
process. All nominations were
reviewed and then a short-list
of finalist nominees in each category was established.
The criteria considered in the
adjudication process to create
the short-listed finalists included: eligibility, Okanagan based
achievements, quality and quantity of achievements, emerging

versus established work, and
general quality of the achievements. Both achievements in
the chosen discipline of the arts
as well as contributions to the
community were considered
with using these criteria.
Tatianna O’Donnell attended
the Okanagan Awards Gala
dinner and, while the Artists’
Initiative did not win, Tatianna
said it was an honour just being
nominated, and a big thrill to attend the ceremony and meet so
many like-minded people interested in promoting the Arts.ß

atianna O’Donnell has caught a
T
new look in her art. Calling the
new series ,”Transitions,” it’s about
capturing motion as stillness. Its
about finding the still in our quick
moving world. Tatianna explains,
“We are often off to a destination,
and this is what we miss on the way
to see the Mona Lisa or the Eiffel
Tower. The out-of-focus is also reminiscent of what we have missed,
what has gone before - memories
swishing by.”
These paintings are available
through the Avenue Gallery in Old
Montreal and through her studio on
Grandview Bench. They have been
exhibited at The Federation of Canadian Artists gallery in Vancouver
this past year, and through the Society of Canadian Artists in Eastern
Canada.
