1 WELCOME TO ENERGY CITY HARRIERS
Welcome.
Energy City Harriers (formerly known as the New Plymouth Harrier Club) was
founded in 1929.
The club caters for runners at all levels of ability. We have members who run just
for fun and fitness and who don’t want to compete with other clubs, and others
who like the thrill of competition. The club also encourages walkers to participate in
club activities.
Our clubrooms are situated in the East End Surf Club, Nobs Line, Strandon, and only
minutes away from the centre of town. Changing rooms and hot showers are
available.
Our club operates from East End during the winter season for the cross-country and
road season, (which runs from the start of April through to the end of September).
See our club calendar page for our winter programme.
We are a friendly club and have various social activities during the season.

2 PACK RUNS
Club pack runs provide a structured and fun opportunity for members to run or walk as part
of a larger group. They are an important part of club culture and help motivate members to
train though the winter, develop their running/walking and meet other members.
Pack runs are structured in a way to allow all members to participate in group runs and walks
by offering a range of packs that start and finish at the same time, in the same location and
run/walk similar routes but at different paces.
Tuesday Night Pack Runs/Walks — 5.30pm to 6.30 pm, starting from the East End Surf Club
clubrooms in Fitzroy through the April to September season – WET OR FINE!
Details of run routes, pack run paces and pack run leaders are posted on the noticeboard in
the club rooms before each pack run.
Please wear something reflective, i.e. belt or top.
Saturday Morning Pack Runs/Walks— 8am to 9.30am, starting from the East End Surf Club
clubrooms in Fitzroy through the April to September season – WET OR FINE!
Note: On a few Saturdays through the season where we are hosting other events an official
pack run may not be offered, please see the club programme for these dates.
Pack run/walk etiquette
Please run on footpaths where possible, if running on the road run on the side of the road, no
more than two abreast.
Pack runs are not races and please keep to the pace set by the pack leader.
Stick together. If you get ahead of other runners/walkers do a loop to enable them to catch
up. Only split up by arrangement between the leader and pack members rather than by dropping off a trail of stragglers. It is the responsibility of all members to ensure that individual
runners/walkers do not have to struggle home by themselves. Take your turn at accompanying slower runners/walkers home.

4 POINTS AND END OF YEAR TROPHIES
POINTS
Points are gained through regular attendance of club pack runs/walks and through
participating in race events. Points awarded are shown by each event in the club calendar
and programme. Members will be eligible for an additional three points for participating
in up to three ANZ sanctioned events, either a half or full marathon, provided club
uniform is worn and your name is in the finishing results. Only one set of points are
awarded each weekend.
One point will be awarded for attending a Tuesday night or Saturday morning pack run/
walk. Most runs commencing away from the clubrooms are worth 3 points.
Race points will be awarded based on sealed handicap or estimated time finishing order
and factoring in numbers participating, i.e. the last finisher on handicap or furthest from
their estimated time receives 4 points with each person ahead receiving another
subsequent point. In a field of 5 the winner would receive 8 points.
To gain points you must put your name in the points book on the day you run/walk. If you

8 TRAINING TIPS
There are no ‘cheats’ or ‘quick fixes’ to positively develop your running. As individuals we
all respond differently to the stress (the running) and recovery (rest) that is required to
encourage our bodies to positively adapt to run longer and/or faster without injury. As
such following a set of broad principles rather than a ’one size fits all approach or plan’ as
often found in books /running magazines or on websites is a more sensible option.
The following are a example set of principles that our members have successfully used and
currently use. If you are interested in discussing these further please ask the Club Captain
or Vice captains.
Principles
1.
Foundations of training are long runs, best level or tempo runs and interval /speed
sessions
2.
Alternate hard days with easy days
3.
One can only train as well as one recovers
4.
Recovery runs cannot be too slow but certainly can be too fast
5.
Do not increase the length of the long run by more than 10% per week
6.
Make every third week an easy week
7.
Running programs often lead to ignoring running principles
8.
Listen to your body. Look after your body and your body will look after you ie avoid
injuries
9.
Seek advice from more experienced runners

9 COMMONLY QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
The following are a few of the commonly asked questions by existing and new members.
Please see the club website to see a extended list or ask one of the committee members.
Q. What is harriers?
Harriers are running clubs that predominantly run for the traditional Cross-Country and
Road running seasons through the winter months . Energy City caters for all levels of
runners from those that enjoy running cross country to those training for half marathons/
marathons or simply running for fitness. We have a small contingent of walkers who
participate in club activities.
Q. Who should I see if I am new to the club or pack runs?
Please make yourself known, introduce yourself to any of our friendly members, they
should be able to point you in the direction of the Club Captain or another committee
member for further information.
Q. What are pack runs?
Pack runs are training runs where a group (pack) runs together. Depending on the number
of members at a pack run there may be numerous packs of differing speeds.
Q. Do I need to be a member to participate in pack runs?
Non-members can participate in three pack runs before we appreciate membership being
paid. We invite you to come along a few times to see whether you would like to join.
Q. How do I know which group to run with?
If you are new to pack runs this can be a difficult decision. Please make yourself known to
us before the run and we can advise you on a suitable starting place or buddy you up with
someone for the run.
Q. What are Club harrier races?
Energy City has four races throughout the season. They are relaxed events where we hope
people enjoy a bit of healthy competition. Results and records are held for Masters and
Junior age-groups, however as participation is a big part of these events and we encourage
all members to try a race or two.

10 BAYLEYS MOUNTAIN TO SURF MARATHON
Energy City Harriers are the founders of the ‘Mountain to Surf’ marathon which has just
been run in 2015 for the 36th time. The ‘Mountain to Surf’ event is an important part of
club history and while it is now organized by TET Athletics Taranaki, the club still receives
many benefits from the running of the marathon.
As a club we support are members to be involved in the event as a participant on one of the
variety of distances offered or a volunteer on the day.
The current record holders are:
Men: Matt DRAVITZKI – 02:13:02 (set in 2006)
Women: Bernie PORTENSKI – 02:34:39 (set in 1992)
For more information on the marathon go to
