Welcoming the new quarter
Hello everyone!
Finally we are on the last quarter of the 2014/2015 academic year. We are thrilled to conquer the coming three months because, as we have hinted before,
the Energy Club is going to host a number of exciting events throughout the fourth quarter! Check out the upcoming events tab below and make sure you
mark your calendar for them ;)
Are you there on twitter? Then don't forget to follow us at @DelftEnergyClub for insightful energy updates! We also have established a schedule for themedtweets throughout the rest of the year. Each week, we are going to tweet news, article, updates, and related events with specific energy topics. So far we
have solar, wind, biomass, nuclear, hydrogen, storage, smart energy products, geothermal, and smart grids as the topics. Do you have more of exciting
topics in mind? We would be happy to hear your ideas! Mention @Delftenergyclub in your tweets for suggestions. You can also tweet about the topic of the
week using hashtag, and get a chance to be retweeted! ;)
For the first week of May, we are going to have Solar energy theme for the tweets. In this light, we are very excited to host the Energy Break with Nuon
Solar team in the beginning of May! More details are available in the upcoming events section.
We are going to post the overview of guest lectures, excursions, festival, and any other energetic events hosted by the Energy Club throughout the year in
our website any time soon, so you can always get the glimpse of our agenda. Lastly, a lot of interesting student opportunities emerged throughout April.
Check out the internship, thesis, and student opportunities sections on our webpage regularly so you won't miss interesting opportunities!

Reactor Visit and Pubquiz
In some cases, an experience was so good that you wish it wouldn’t come to an end. One of these unique cases was the TU Delft reactor visit hosted by the
Energy Club on Thursday, April 23rd 2015. We were very excited that the registration lists were full within a few minutes and the visit was awaited with great
impatience. But that was just the beginning!
On the 23rd of April at 13.00, 30 students from different backgrounds and faculties were gathered at the TU Delft Reactor building to live the experience of
being in a few feet distance from a nuclear reactor core. Everyone was granted with the necessary security card, and the visit was begun with an excellent
presentation by Dr. Jaan Leen Kloostermaan. Dr. Kloosterman introduced the participants with the general nuclear reactor technology, followed by an
insightful glance on Thorium Molten Salts Reactors. The latter technology is a hot topic being discussed by the scientist as the future of nuclear reactors for
its inherently more safe features in terms of raction conditions, nuclear fuel requirements, and radioactive waste management. This introduction was really
getting everyone in the nuclear mood!
Finally there came the real "nuclear" experience, where the students were given the full tour of the nuclear reactor hall. The impressive blue Cherenkov
radiation emitted by the nuclear reaction under 8 meters of water reservoir was something you could hardly gets your eyes off. Unfortunately photos were
not allowed within the reactor hall. The tour was closed with a group photo in front of the reactor dome.
But the day was ended not just yet. The participants along with the Energy Club board headed to the Sports’ Café to enjoy the 1st edition of Energy Pubquiz
for 2015. Fun questions, puzzles, "thoughtful" calculations, estimations, music, sketches, but above all, drinks and much laughter and fun were the higlight of
the afternoon. We were truly pleased by the pleasant atmosphere and the fun and friendly interaction among the participants throughout the “Radioactive”
pubquiz. One drink under the bright sun was the perfect ending to that great day.

The oceans are teeming with energy. For a long time, these energies have remained largely untapped. In recent years, however, ocean energy has begun to
be harnessed worldwide as it has the theoretical potential to satisfy the global electricity demand. This is why, the Delft Energy Initiative (DEI) has organized
an Ocean Energy Kick-Off meeting on the 28th of April for TUD researchers with the aim to promote this topic and increase as well as converge research
activities in our university. All types of ocean energy, being it wave energy, tidal energy, ocean thermal energy conversion, aquatic biomass have been
presented followed by an intense discussion between all participants who are working in this field or are intending to do so in the future. Monthly stakeholder
meetings will be organized in the upcoming years where ideas can be discussed and further developed.
Stay tuned, as the Energy Club is also planning on organizing a Masterclass in the area of Ocean Energy.
Upcoming Events
Energy Break - Nuon Solar Team
The application of solar PV modules in the rooftops are getting more and more diffused in the neighborhood. But will the cars driven by solar PV also be part
of our sustainable future? Find out how this novel technology has been developed and will claim its place in the sustainable mobility.
The Energy Club is proudly hosting the Energy Break with the Nuon Solar Team! It will be an insightful lunch lecture, followed by a visit to the TU Delft Dream
Hall to discover how and where the solar cars have been nurtured. Lunch will be the treat from us.
Thursday, May 7th 2015 at Hall G CiTG TU Delft

After having already organized two successful Masterclasses last year, we will organize a new Masterclass this May. The topic will be Integration in Energy
Systems: Smart Cities of the Future. We aim to give students the knowledge and inspiration to answer the following question: How to develop a
sustainable integrated energy system for our future cities?
More information will follow, but keep your eyes open because limited spots will be available.
