Selecting the right wheelchairs is crucial to overall quality of life.
Wheelchairs must be sized properly and include the right features to meet
personal lifestyle, body condition and symptom. Please follow the simple
steps in this guide to have more concepts before buying a chair.
1. Fit your Lifestyle
Where and how wheelchairs are used? For frequent user, a wheelchair with detachable or
flip-back armrest will suit your transfer requirement. For traveller, a lightweight, foldable
and compact wheelchair is suggested. In limited space, a compact wheelchair with easy
maneuverability is recommended. Furthermore, to choose a suitable rear wheel size, you need
to consider the ability to propel.
2. Fit your Body
a. Hipbone area
As a high risk group of pressure areas, a daily user should
choose a chair with ergonomic seat to better relieve hipbone
pressure. For occasional & temporary use, a basic wheelchair
could be sufficient, yet the occupant should be able to
reposition body from time to time to relieve pressure.
b. Back
A “reclining wheelchair” is convenient for the
attendant to meet the needs of a less mobile
user and also ensure that are comfortable in the
wheelchair. A “Tilt in Space” wheelchair is will
provide excellent pressure relief and also ensure
good postural support.

c. Seat width
The space between or side panel should be at least two fingers width. This will ensure that the user is comfortably
positioned and support adequately.

d. Seat depth
To measure a suitable seat depth, measure the length from behind the knee to lower back, and then remove 2 inches.
This will ensure that the user is well supported and the seat upholstery will not rub on their legs.
e. Footplates height
The feet should be placed comfortably on the footplates and the knees should be in line with the hip. If the footplates
are too high then there is an increased risk of a pressure area.
3. Fit your Symptom
Just like every person, not every wheelchair is identical. Here, we provide a rather simple decision tree to help you
understand how body condition should relate to wheelchair decision. However, to pick one that fits your symptom,
you have to talk to an Occupational Therapist.
