exam.
1. Engineering economy (you will need to use Table 8.9 on page 216 of the book).
a. Draw a cash flow diagram and calculate the amount of money that you must deposit into an
account now if interest rate is 6% per year, the money is compounded monthly, and the person
receiving the money must be able to withdraw $100 one year from now.
b. Draw a cash flow diagram and calculate the amount of money that you must deposit into an
account now if interest rate is 6% per year, the money is compounded monthly, and the person
receiving the money must be able to withdraw $100 two years from now.
c. Draw a cash flow diagram and calculate the amount of money that you must deposit into an
account now if interest rate is 6% per year, the money is compounded monthly, and the person
receiving the money must be able to withdraw $100 one year from now AND $100 two years from
now.
2. If:
a. Height follows a normal distribution;
b. The average height of a male CSU student is 175 cm;
c. There are 15,500 male students at CSU, and
d. 622 males students at CSU are more than 189 cm tall;
What is the standard deviation of height for a male CSU student?
3. Solve the following problem using the 7-step material balance
- method that was discussed in chapter 14
of the textbook. Make sure that you clearly label each step.
A food company makes a liquid sweetener by adding sugar to 680 kg of beet syrup (which has 13%
sugar content, and the rest water) and 650 kg of corn syrup (8% sugar, the rest water). 350 kg of water
are then boiled off to create a mixture that is 18% sugar. How many kg of sugar were added?
4. Solve the following problem using the 7-step problem solving process that was discussed in chapter 4
of the textbook. Make sure that you clearly label each step
A steel beam is suspended from two cables in the configuration shown. The beam has a length of 10.0
meters (as shown) the cross-sectional area (perpendicular to the length) is 0.020 square meters.
Calculate:
a. The mass of the beam
b. The tension in each cable
c. The horizontal force in the beam
d. The horizontal stress in the beam
e. The amount of decrease in the length of the beam caused by the horizontal stress in the beam
(Assume the acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/sec2, which means 1kg = 9.8 N)
