Despite recent events, the news
surrounding Amtrak isn’t all bad.
America’s only national passenger rail system is working closely
with city of Carlinville officials
to move forward with the plans
for a new station building.
“We’re getting closer,” Mayor
Deanna Demuzio said. Both she
and the city’s attorney, Rick Bertinetti, had a conference call with
Amtrak officials on Wednesday
May 6 to discuss progress of the
plans and monetary responsibilities of both Carlinville and Amtrak.
“Their designs are about ninety percent complete,” Demuzio
said. The mayor went on to say
that both parties are currently
reviewing the original agreement and that Amtrak will soon
be sending an updated contract
to be reviewed and voted upon
by the city council. Part of the
discussion between the two par-
ties focuses on the logistics of the
actual construction of the facility.
Demuzio said the city would
most likely have to conduct bid
letting to determine both who and
what are the most cost effective
options for the building. She also
acknowledged that getting everyone on the same page with the
same sense of urgency might be a
challenge. The city of Carlinville,
Amtrak as well Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT)
are all or will all be involved in
the project at some point.
Mayor Demuzio said the officials with Amtrak are telling
her that if all goes according to
plan, construction on the building
could begin by late summer.
The building itself will be
larger than the current structure.
Proposed plans show a large seating area for waiting passengers.
Inside the building will be an area
with tourism literature for the city
of Carlinville as well as Macoupin
