Journalism: tutored by Amanda Poskevich
8 th – 12 th grade
This course will give each student the ability to use their creativity and explore their writing and designing abilities to bring to life this year’s
activities to each person in and outside of BHSE. This class should be a joy to each student; however, the responsibilities should not be
taken lightly. Each student’s ability, eagerness, and attention to detail will be what people in and around BHSE see as our week to week
activities unfold in front of their eyes. What others see in each individual’s work, is what they see happening at BHSE through our Year
Book and how our students are perceived through their journalism.

American History: tutored by Dick Achuff
10 th - 12 th grade
This positive, patriotic approach to American history brings to life events and personalities that have shaped America and places a special
emphasis on America’s Christian past. Heritage of Freedom rejects the conflict approach of Marxist historians (and progressive educators
and liberal newsmen) to give a narrative account of what has made our country great and what can keep it great. Every Student needs to
take this course, as it may be the last time he or she may be exposed to the truth of our Christian founding.

Civics (1 st semester class): tutored by Dick Achuff
10 th - 12 th grade
A conservative, Christian perspective makes this civics and government course unique. Students need the firm foundation this course
provides to become informed, responsible citizens and voters in today’s world. “American Government” opens with an inspiring look at the
blessings we enjoy and the symbols we hold dear as American citizens. At the core of the text is a fascinating study of the Constitution, the
rights and privileges it guarantees the American people, and the government it established with its limits, and responsibilities. Next
students learn about federalism and government at the state and local levels concluding with a chapter on the opportunities and
responsibilities of American citizens to get involved in their unique political system.
This is a challenging course requiring much preparation but a MUST for our future leaders of America; YOUR CHILDREN. There is much
in-class participation and discussion.

Economics (2 nd semester class): tutored by Dick Achuff
10 th – 12 th grade
Emphasis on free enterprise capitalism in a free market economy sets this book apart from the competition. The Biblical views of work,
wealth, and stewardship appear throughout the text, helping students to understand the proper economic roles of individual producers
and consumers as well as that of the government from a conservative, Christian perspective. The stark contrast between the market
economy—the cornerstone of prosperity in the United States—and the command economy—the hallmark of fiscal failure in Communist
countries—is graphically presented in illustration of the economic principles that govern all societies. Essential concepts such as
competition in the marketplace and private ownership of capital are discussed from a conservative perspective.
This is a challenging course requiring much preparation but a MUST for our future leaders of America; YOUR CHILDREN.

World Geography: tutored by Dick Achuff
8 th - 12 th grade
World Geography presents a physical-cultural study of the earth and mankind from a conservative Christian perspective. Basic to this
perspective is the conviction that God is the Creator of the earth and of man. By applying their knowledge of the Creation, the Flood, the
beginning of nations at Babel, and God's dealing with mankind throughout the ages, students can better understand the physical features
of the earth as well as the cultures of its people. The course presents a deeper study of the religions, languages, customs, historic
backgrounds, resources, and industries to expand the students' knowledge of each continent, region, and country presented. Much map
work is expected and required. At the completion of the course, students will have a better understanding of the development of different
countries and their location, as well as their impacts on world events of today.

World History: tutored by Dick Achuff
9 th - 12 th grade
This course stands on the conviction that God is the Creator of the world and the Controller of history, and is taught from a Christian
perspective building a solid foundation of ancient history and geography, tracing man’s history back to the Garden of Eden. It gives a
presentation of neglected Asian and African cultures in a unique ancient-to-modern style, helping students to recognize other peoples and
cultures. An in-depth study of the Greco-Roman culture lays the groundwork for a section on medieval history. The last section brings the
student to the doorstep of current history and vividly depicts world events in light of God’s master plan. Since man’s actions are a
product of his thoughts; the history of ideas is emphasized, rather than only political events and economic conditions. Students are given a
Christian perspective on language, chronology, “prehistoric times,” art, music, revolutionism, evolutionism, socialism, Communism,
humanism, liberalism, and much more.
This is a challenging course requiring much preparation but must for future leaders of America.

Destination Imagination:
tutored by Jennifer Sellers
6 th – 12 th grades
Students work in teams to solve a challenge in one of the following areas: STEM, Improv, Visual Arts, or Service Learning. Each Challenge is
open-ended and enables student teams to learn and experience the creative process from imagination to innovation. Academic
tournaments take place in March where teams have the opportunity to present their solutions to trained appraisers. Students have fun and
gain confidence in their ability to solve any challenge. Students wishing to compete will meet after classes once a month until January
followed by bi-weekly after-school meetings to prepare for the tournament. These after-school meetings can be after classes on Mondays
or other days that are more convenient. Winning teams will have the opportunity to advance to other competitions.
Parental involvement is necessary to make this work. Parents of each team member will work together as a team to provide assistance
where needed. Parents can choose from the following areas: classroom assistance with monthly rotations, provide appraisers for
competition, provide weekly snacks, and/or if needed, work time outside of class with other team members. However, parental involvment
cannot be to help with ideas or help to create any portion of their challenge. All challenges from the imagination to innovation process
must be original ideas by the students themselves. We want this to be a fun, learning experience where students can be proud of what they
accomplish on their own. A parental committal form will be required to sign and return before your child can become a member
of Destination Imagination.
