Balmoral 9 – 10 The Balmoral range has all the elements you will need to create a timeless environment in any home, whether old or new. Welcome Royal Oak Furniture was established in 1977 by Janet and Paul Kent, not in the traditional manner but as a result of a challenge. Based in the Yorkshire Dales and employing the skills and values of local Dales craftsmen, Royal Oak produces some of the finest quality solid oak furniture. Janet bought a dresser made by local joiners, Paul thought it was shabbily made and said that he could do better. This resulted in the first Royal Oak dresser being made. We hope that you enjoy looking through our brochure and admire the quality and beauty of one of nature’s finest woods. The Company has grown slowly over the years with Janet and Paul still at the helm. Balmoral Study 11 – 12 The Balmoral Study provides customers with beautiful yet practical and adaptable pieces for the home office. Clifford 13 – 14 The Clifford Range is made from solid Pippy Oak selected for its natural pips, knots and splits giving the range its distinctive and individual character. Linton 15 – 16 Made in solid Oak, the Linton Collection is a stylish, modern design of exceptional quality for contemporary living and dining. Janet Kent Director PATELEY 17 – 18 The Pateley range is made from a combination of Solid Oak and Solid Walnut, the striking contrast emphasising the natural beauty of wood. Primarily for use in timber framed buildings and great Tudor battle ships such as the Mary Rose. Even before this Oak trees were used as a meeting point and councils were held around these great old trees. This has left us with a great legacy. Not only do we still have the farmed and managed plantations from which to select the best trees, KILN DRYING PRODUCTION POLISHING All the Oak that we use has had years of drying to reduce the moisture content down to a level suitable for today’s modern centrally heated houses. The next process is the production of component pieces from the dried wood. We combine traditional methods of construction, some dating back 500 years with modern machinery such as C.N.C. Routers and speed sanders to produce our furniture. Our furniture is spray polished with a modern lacquer, which is applied in several stages. The process involved in reducing the moisture content of the wood is technical and time consuming. Firstly the green wood is cut into planks and then stacked outside with spaces between each plank allowing the air to circulate. This air-drying is the first drying process, and it is left like this for one year plus a year per inch of thickness per plank. Once this process is complete it is placed in the kiln for at least three months. The temperature in the kiln is critical. Too hot and the wood will warp and split, too cold and the moisture content will be too high. the Oak tree is also intertwined with British culture and history. The reasons we continue to use traditional methods is that all the furniture we produce is made of solid oak and is subject to atmospheric conditions. Wood is a natural product and, despite kiln drying, will continue to swell and shrink in response to the atmosphere. Traditional methods allow for the natural movement of the wood while it takes on and looses moisture. These traditional methods are tried and tested and include mortice and tenon joints, dovetailed drawers, slot screwed drawer bottoms, and floating panels in the doors. All of our furniture is made entirely of solid Oak – including the backboards and drawer bottoms. OAK GRAIN DISPLAYS CUTS OF OAK TYPES OF OAK LEATHER DESIGN Oak is a natural product and its grain markings and colouring will have been affected by the conditions in which it has grown. Minerals in the soil, depth of soil, and climate will dictate not only the growth rate of the tree but also the colouring in the grain. Weather, insect or human damage also affects grain colouring. The way the log is converted is the initial and most important part in deciding the type of grain feature and figuring which will be apparent in the board. A mass of knots, which shows externally as a big lump on the tree trunk, is known as a burr. Smaller lumps and whiskery twigs sprouting from the trunk leave smaller marks and when the tree has been felled for furniture we call these marks pips; but they are also know as cats paws. The Oak trees that show these characteristics are specially selected for their ‘Pippy’ Oak. The pips, knots, splits and swirling grain patterns, which characterize Pippy Oak, are used to great effect in several ranges of our furniture. Like Oak, leather is a natural product and has individual characteristics, which make each hide unique. Leather will always bear the marks of its natural origin and these characteristics can show as healed scars, growth marks, areas of differing fibre density and hair pore structure. These marks in no way detract from the quality of the leather, they are all part of natural life and should be enjoyed for that. Indeed, we try to use the most natural aniline hides that will continue to mark and age with use. Taking our inspiration from those items of furniture, which have graced real homes for centuries, our complete range has been developed so that these traditional designs can be successfully transferred to the modern home environment. All the marks and colourings in the Oak are the story of its life and as such enhance the natural beauty of the furniture that we produce. For those who prefer something more pristine we do offer a corrected hide. This means that the hide has had any scars removed and has been processed in such a way that the graining in the hide is very even. This may effect the timber by showing not only variations in the grain colouring but also with marks such as knots and splits. These variations are completely natural and add great depth and character to the timber boards. There are a number of ways to convert a log into boards. Crown or through and through cut logs produce plain-grained boards showing both tight and open grain patterns. Quarter Sawn is a radial cut from the center of the tree. In Oak it produces the distinctive Medullary Rays or silver ribbon figuring throughout the full length of the board. This type of cut is the most stable and reduces the amount the wood warps and shrinks. Of course trees never grow straight and the heart often does not run up the centre of the tree so figuring in all cuts of Oak varies greatly. A great deal of time and skill is spent selecting and matching boards for each and every item of furniture. Due to the natural variations in fibre texture and grain pattern no two hides are alike. Even corrected hides will vary. Dyes and finishes penetrate to different degrees in different parts of the hide. For this reason it is impossible to guarantee a perfect match between hides of the same colour. The designers at Royal Oak understand, most importantly, how to work with wood, as well as the importance of proportions, style, and function. We are constantly developing and adding to our extensive ranges, however if you require something a little bit special or something made to your own personal specifications then the designers at Royal Oak will be more than happy to meet your requirements. First the base coat is applied and left to dry. Once dry it is sanded with a fine sand paper – this is also called de-nibbing. This produces a smooth surface to apply the next coat of lacquer. The top coat of lacquer is applied and left to dry. The furniture is finished with a coat of wax applied with a fine wire wool to produce a deep smooth finish. This finish is hardwearing and should withstand hot cups and plates without marking. However if there is any water or any other liquid spilt it should be cleaned up immediately to stop any damage to the lacquer. To maintain the finish a wax polish should be applied once every six months with a soft cloth. We also advise that there are live plants kept in the same room as the furniture. This keeps the moisture level in the room constant and stops excessive movement in the wood. hampton RANGE The Hampton Range embodies all the quality and features for which the Royal Oak Furniture Company are renowned.
