Hill Introduction to the Service Brothers and sisters in Christ: through the Sacrament of Baptism we are initiated into Christ’s holy church. We are incorporated into God’s mighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit. All this is God’s gift, offered to us without price. Through confirmation, and through the reaffirmation of our faith, we renew the covenant declared at our baptism, acknowledge what God is doing for us, and affirm our commitment to Christ’s holy church. Renunciation of Sin and Profession of Faith On behalf of the whole church, I ask you: do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of your sin? I do. 2 Our Confirmation Class is listed on the back page of our bulletin. Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves? I do. Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races? I do. According to the grace given to you, will you remain faithful members of Christ’s holy church and serve as Christ’s representatives in the world? I will. Thanksgiving over the water Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you Leader: Let us pray. Eternal Father: When nothing existed but chaos, You swept across the dark waters and brought forth light. In the days of Noah, You saved those on the ark through water. After the flood you set in the clouds a rainbow. When you saw your people as slaves in Egypt, You led them to freedom through the sea. Their children you brought through the Jordan to the land which you promised. People: Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Tell of God’s mercy each day. Leader: In the fullness of time you sent Jesus, nurtured in the water of a womb. He was baptized by John and anointed by your spirit. He called his disciples to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection and to make disciples of all nations. People: Declare his works to the nations, His glory among all the people. Leader: Pour out your Holy Spirit, to bless this gift of water and those who receive it, to wash away their sin and clothe them in righteousness and throughout their lives, that, dying and being raised with Christ, they may share in his final victory. People: All praise to you, Eternal Father, Through your Son Jesus Christ, Who with you and the Holy Spirit Lives and reigns for ever. Amen. 3 Celebration of Our Life Together Invitation to Annelies Kevin Holland + Passing of the Peace Offering of Our Gifts to God Offertory Sacred Heart (Ubi caritas III) Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. During the singing of the doxology, threes, fours and fives may leave for Wiggler Worship in room 206. + Scripture Lesson Luke 14:25-33 Now large crowds were travelling with him; and he turned and said to them, ‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, “This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.” Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions. Sermon Don’t Water-Down Jesus Rev. Although Mary Jane has no biological family, she does have a very close family who love her dearly. That family is the staff of the healthcare center. Focusing on bone health is important across the lifespan. Sufficient dietary calcium consumption plays a fundamental role in this. It is easy, tasty and preferred that we consume calcium from natural, dietary sources versus a supplement. The recommended total is around 1,200 mg/day, depending on age. Your body can only absorb approximately 500 milligrams of calcium at a time. Therefore, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Natalie Taft suggests aiming for servings of calcium-rich foods or beverages at least 3x/day versus all at once. Excellent sources of calcium are listed as having more than 20% Daily Value (DV) on the nutrition label. There are also good non-dairy sources of calcium like kale, sardines and chia seeds. Consider a calcium supplement, as needed, in 500 mg doses and not to exceed 2,000 mg per day if you feel you don’t get enough naturally. Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium; however, there are not many naturally occurring Vitamin D-rich foods. Most people can meet at least some of their needs through brief exposure to sunlight and many dairy products are fortified with Vitamin D. Milk, including skim, is fortified with the same amount of Vitamin D and contains the same amount of calcium per serving, regardless of fat content. Consider getting your Vitamin D levels checked to determine if a supplement is needed. Nutrition question? In our case, this has to do with making firm one’s faith in Jesus Christ, taking on the identity as a disciple of Jesus, and committing to the local church of ESUMC the offering of one’s prayers, presence, service, gifts, and witness. Many a momentous occasion occurs in the life of a young man and woman, yet none can trump the occasion at hand. I am excited for what God has in store for these faithful 40. We should all be grateful for the investment of our parent coordinators, Jennifer Martin and Leslie Watts, and what they have put into the making this an excellent year for our confirmands and leaders. I am inspired by the committed mentoring offered by our small group leaders, Stephen Tedder, Emory and Chris Jepsen, Ingrid Dunstan, Garrett Dimond, and Brad Davis, as they provided the space for students to wrestle with theology, doctrine, and polity, providing a solid framework for the business of making one’s faith firm. With the end of the class our students embark upon a new beginning. My prayer is that they will remain faithful to what Christ has made firm in their hearts, souls, and minds post confirmation Sunday, and use their strength to respond to God’s grace by themselves making disciples for the transformation of the world. Our first View & Do centers on race. When the subject of race comes up, many choose to avoid it because it is so sensitive. As a result, it can be a taboo subject. But it’s a subject that merits discussion. We only need to turn on the news to see that mistrust, anger, fear, and divisions still exist in our communities. As Christians, we must work together in faith toward solutions and transformation. But, how do we do that? Our June film and discussion features the documentary Racial Taboo, and aims to create dialogue to help people talk openly and respectfully about differences, similarities, and social issues. Racial Taboo combines history, comedy and candid interviews to explore why it’s still hard to discuss race in mixed groups. Join us on Thursday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Kerr Hall for the showing of Racial Taboo followed by a discussion led by the film’s producer, Brian Grimm, and Rev. Lisa Yebuah.
