Fashion and Color The fashion colors of the season come from stylists and trend-setters as well as from couture design houses. This Fall and Holiday Season, the hot trends are neutral grays, mauves and camels, with pops of deep red or other bright color. Denims are rich and dark. Tweeds and herringbone textures as well as silks and bold prints were also prominent on the runway and in trend reports. We’ve chosen our holiday scarf collection to reflect some of fashion’s current trends, but to also include some of our customer (and our) favorites. With both contemporary and traditional designs to choose from, there is something for everyone. Silk weaving provides them additional income, which improves their standard of living and enables them to send their children to school rather than keeping them at home to assist with farm work. Design and quality training is provided to the weavers, as well as basic vocational training and marketing support. The Tanorn project has been replicated in other rural Cambodian villages, and these projects now support approximately 100 families that would otherwise be living in dire poverty. Pattanarak Foundation, Thailand - works to balance development and conservation among disadvantaged communities and stateless peoples along Thailand’s borders. Their products are handmade with an indigenous species of cotton organically grown along the Thai-Lao border on the banks of the Mekong River. After spinning, dyeing and weaving, some products are sewn by projects in the west of Thailand along the Burmese border. This helps forge links and exchange ideas between communities that are experiencing similar challenges. One village group working with Pattanarak specializes in indigo dyeing, always popular for its lively colour – “nature’s true blue.” Prae Pan Group, Thailand – has 200 members in 7 villages in Khon Kae province in Northeast Thailand. The artisans are skilled at supplementary weft weaving and the natural dyeing of cotton, although they weave silk as well. Prae Pan has been operating for 20 years, and is proud to be entirely villager-run and self-sufficient. Their work allows them to stay in their villages where they can live with their families, grow rice, and practice their foremothers’ art while preserving it for their heirs. Sre Po Group, Cambodia – The organization focuses on developing life skills that assist in breaking the cycle of poverty and illiteracy for vulnerable people, especially women. Their programs empower and support the women by providing knowledge and skills that have a longterm benefit, including vocational training, education programs in health and literacy, employment opportunities that pay a livable wage, ongoing training and support for the development of professional competence and ethical practices, sustainable programs that improve lives, increase skills and benefit the community. Mai Savanh Lao, Laos – Mai Savanh Lao grew out of an aid project aimed at generating sustainable income for underprivileged families in remote areas of Laos. The families receive educational courses and vocational training. Weavers work from home, giving them a high degree of flexibility, and enabling Mai Savanh Lao to product both small and large orders. Mai Savanh Lao has implemented modern throwing and warping techniques in order to supply superior raw material to their producers. Over 200 weavers have now been trained to use these improved hand-powered shuttle looms. www.HeartSilks.com Susan Lomartire, President Telephone: (919) 548-7834 HeartSilks and Goathouse Holiday Catalog 2010 11
