AGENDA
PREFACE
Currently, the global infrastructure is the life blood of prosperity and economic development of
various nations. With the growing world population, the need for urbanization and rapid
motorization will continue to spur infrastructure planners to integrate transport system that will
increase connectivity cross nations and improve mobility. India on the other hand recognizes that
modernizing its infrastructure be it the roads, railways, etc will help foster network and mobility.
Thus, providing connectivity to remote areas; accessibility to markets, schools, and hospitals; and
opening up remote regions to trade and investment etc.
Presently the rise in both passenger and freight movement has consistently increased due to rapid
development and expansion of the road network. Concurrently safety related issues have
emerged with the increase in road accidents and fatalities, thus calling for concerted and multidisciplinary preventive and remedial efforts. Understanding the needs to reduce accidents and
fatalities, the Government of India has revived the road safety laws by making them more stringent
that will help reducing road deaths. It has also set up the National Road Safety Policy that covers
the preventive and post-accident aspects of traffic safety measures. The Government has also set
aside 20 per cent of the investment of US$ 1 trillion reserved for infrastructure during the 12th
Five-Year Plan (2012–17) to develop the country's roads.
