Welcome to the Canterbury Business
Directory published by Canterbury
City Council in association with
Burrows Communications Ltd.
Canterbury City Council is proud to
support the business community
through its economic development
team. The team works closely with
support organisations such as
Canterbury 4 Business (the business
partnership for Canterbury, Herne Bay
and Whitstable), Canterbury City
Partnership and Herne Bay Town
Partners in delivering support
initiatives as well as working with
commercial agents and planning
policy in order to promote the future
business needs of the district.
The last few years have seen some
exciting developments unfold within
the district, with more still to follow.
2011 saw the opening of The Marlowe
Theatre which is already impacting very
positively on the local economy.
Evidence of this is the Purple Flag
accreditation we recently gained for
the health of our evening economy in
Canterbury City Centre, and in 2012
the Beaney art museum and library
opened after a restoration project.
Our coastal towns have also flourished in the past year with high street
empty shop rates significantly lower
than the national average. We are looking to engage with local businesses
and potential inward investors in order
to improve the business, cultural and
employment sectors which are key to
healthy communities.
We hope that this guide and its
associated CD-ROM will become an
invaluable tool to new, growing and

TRANSPORT LINKS
The Canterbury district has excellent
road links, with the M20 (M25/M26)
and M2 motorways providing easy
links to London and its airports. The
A2 and A260 connect Canterbury
with the port of Dover and the
Eurotunnel terminal in Cheriton near
Folkestone. Herne Bay and Whitstable
are both a short drive from Canterbury,
via the A28/A291 and A290.
Canterbury has two mainline railway
stations, East and West, and is served
by frequent trains to and from
London Charing Cross, London
Victoria, (approximately 90 minutes),
and elsewhere in Kent. The HS1 service
provides a journey time from London’s
St Pancras International to Canterbury
West of approximately 56 minutes.
Eurostar trains run from Ashford
International Station, just a 20-minute
rail journey from Canterbury.
Whitstable and Herne Bay are both on
a direct line to London Victoria
(approx. 80 minutes journey time).
London Airports are all approximately
under two hours drive from

project known as StartMyBiz, which
involves key partners such as Kent
County Council, Canterbury 4
Business, City Centre Partnership,
University of Kent, Canterbury
Christ Church University and
Canterbury College.
Local journalist Annie Sparks enlisted
the support of StartMyBiz to help
launch her online lifestyle magazine
“Chaleureuse”; a bountiful feast of
classic and quirky ideas focused on
French cooking, design, style, interiors
and gardens.
Delighted at her progress Annie said,
“StartMyBiz has been a great
help to my business, both in
terms of the 121 business advice
I’ve received and the fantastic
seminars they run.”
StartMyBiz helped Annie to channel
her ideas into a workable business
model and encouraged her to
take Chaleureuse in exciting and
profitable new directions by using
her language and newfound social
media skills to provide B2B
translation and online marketing
services. Explaining her enthusiasm

The city council’s Local Economy
Team provides information, advice
and support in eight key areas:
Commercial development and inward
investment - Wherever possible, the
council supports and facilitates local
business expansions and re-investments,
working closely with Locate in Kent.
A free online property register of
over 200 locally available commercial
property and sites is available. The
council owns and manages a set of
small business units that provide
incubator type accommodation for
start-up and growing businesses.
Business advice and support –
The Local Economy Team directs
both local businesses and potential
start-up businesses to the appropriate
information, business agencies or
organisations offering services
including training and skills
development. One such support
service is startmybiz (see case
study opposite).
A voice and advocate for business –
The Local Economy Team seeks to
ensure the current and future needs
of local businesses and the economy
are emphasised and represented at
all levels of government through the
district’s local economic partnership,
Canterbury 4 Business (C4B).
