SEARCH FOR PARTNER CALL FOR PROPOSAL: H2020‐REFLECTIVE‐6‐2015 Topic: Innovation ecosystems of digital cultural assets. Digital technologies in the geological and paleontological heritage of Europe GeoTech TITLE ACRONIM TOPIC DESCRIPTION: Specific Challenge: The digital age has revolutionised our habits, behaviours and expectations. The utilisation of digital technologies for research in the humanities and social sciences demonstrates the need for innovation at the service of scholarship and its advancement. The shift to digital is impacting on identities and cultures and transforming the shape of the knowledge that we will transmit to future generations as well as the means by which we can interact with it. . This specific challenge responds to the growing urge to share the wealth of cultural resources, research and knowledge in our collections and recognises that new cultural assets are continually created. It will show how digital cultural resources can promote creativity and generate innovation in research design and methodology, lead to richer interpretations of the past, bring new perspectives to questions of identity and culture, and generate societal and economic benefits. Europe’s vast cultural heritage can be transformed into digital assets, whose integration and reuse through research‐led methods can create value for European cultural institutions and heritage, tourism and the cultural and creative industries. The objective is to enhance the analysis of cultural resources to improve our understanding of how European identity can be traced, constructed or debated, and to use those resources to foster innovation across sectors. Scope: Support and promote access to and resue of digital cultural heritage resources (available in scientific collections, archives, museums, libraries and cultural heritage sites) as part of research and innovation. Projects should enable new models and demonstrations of the analysis, interpretation and understanding of Europe's cultural and intellectual history and/or capitalising on state of the art technologies (e.g. mobile and wearable devices), bring cultural content to new audiences in novel ways, through the development of new Granada es Provincia

environments, applications, tools, and services for digital cultural resources in scientific collections, archives, museums, libraries and cultural heritage sites. The developed technologies or services should be generated in the context of humanities research perspectives (identity, culture, questions of place, historical and cultural knowledge) and/or facilitate the access, reuse and exploitation of digital cultural resources meeting real user needs. They should illustrate how they allow new research questions to be formulated on the basis of cross‐collaboration and/or stimulate cross‐border, cross‐lingual multi‐disciplinary reuse of Europe's cultural heritage, enabling collaboration and partnerships and co‐production of knowledge across sectors and communities of researchers and users. Proposals should demonstrate appropriate methods of re‐using and repurposing digital assets, paving the way for wider exploitation of Europe's cultural resources and boosting innovation. The Commission considers that proposals requesting a contribution from the EU between EUR 2 million and 4 million would allow this specific challenge to be addressed appropriately. Nonetheless, this does not preclude submission and selection of proposals requesting other amounts. Expected impact: Activities under this topic will: ∙ stimulate new research perspectives for the humanities and social science communities, promote further the use of digital cultural heritage allowing its reinterpretation towards the development of a new shared culture in Europe. ∙ provide innovative and creative methods for approaching cultural assets and generate applications and services to access and exploit the rich and diverse European digital cultural heritage in a sustainable way. ∙ foster collaboration between those with primary expertise in the interpretation of cultural data and researchers with complementary expertise in digital and interactive frameworks. Projects will strengthen the European capability in creating new forms of digital entertainment and engagement based on cultural heritage and will promote the use of new technologies such as new media and new modalities of access. In addition these activities will create a viable and sustainable cross‐border, cross‐lingual and/or cross‐sector digital exploitation of European digital cultural heritage assets by putting into place new networks of researchers, scholars, ICT professionals and specialists of digital heritage. Type of action: Innovation actions OBJETIVES To identify, analyze, and develop new demonstration models of digital technologies applicable to the study, protection and dissemination of geological and paleontological heritage of Europe. To develop strategies for cultural leisure and sustainable tourism in those territories with singular geological and paleontological heritage. The digital technology must be directly linked with the scientific point of view of these geo‐paleontological sites in Europe. To allow the accessibility and dissemination of the geo – paleontological heritage to all stakeholders interested. To develop digital models (eg. augmented reality and 3D) that give answers to the necessities and interests of those groups with different capacities (low‐mobility, deafs, blinds, etc), seniors, etc. BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION Europe has many examples of geological and paleontological heritage. Many of them are included under the figure of Geoparks. The European Geoparks promote the protection of their geodiversity, the dissemination of the heritage to the general public, as well as the development of the tourism offer over this heritage (geo‐tourism, geo‐visit, etc….). In this context, digital, information and communication technologies have increased its leadership and, with the fast deployment of low cost multimedia devices between society, has promoted an exponential growth in the processing and interpretation of European heritage. This situation enables to improve the access to the heritage and to the variety of readings on it. Although these technologies are having an increasing role in the enhancement of their applicability over the European cultural heritage, still they are much pending to be done in application of these digital technologies in the geological and paleontological heritage of Europe. The project will analyze the market resources and digital technologies such as interactive applications, virtual or augmented reality, 3D models, etc, developed an European level in order to determine which are most appropriate to: ƒ
Allow and to make visible the data that it can be extracted from previous scientific studies developed over European geoparks or over paleontological sites in order to present to the society in a educational way. ƒ
To become interest in the geological and paleontological European heritage to the general public and public with disabilities. The innovative digital technologies will provide new experiences adapted to the necessities of different groups. Digital technologies, through "virtual recreations" minimized the most common difficulties of the geological areas because of their orografhy (difficult access), avoiding risks, the protection of sensitive and singular areas, etc. Granada es Provincia

Identify technological models that reflect or complete the recreation of non‐existent / present paleontological heritage elements and recreating the geological evolution of Geoparks; In this sense, the project aims at a comprehensive analysis of existing technologies in the market and its multifunctional analysis, with the added challenge of incorporating integrated technological solutions. Such as: ‐ Combined, Automatic and Dynamic Indoor and Outdoor Positioning technologies. ‐ New and innovative stereoscopic vision applications. ‐ Video – mapping combined with sound. ‐ Others,. This first phase of the project will be based on multimodal and multifunctional perspective of analysis at European level of these technologies, in order to develop a pilot model where technical resources will be integrated to develop portable digital devices. These devices must satisfy on one hand the necessities of the public interested in access to this heritage and on another hand must be useful to the scientific community. From this pilot application we will proceed to its technical and functional validation on several key aspects (second phase): 1) Facilitate links between documents generated from scientific research with the digital tools to be developed in the framework of the project. This activity will facilitate the understanding, the restoration and the analysis and dissemination of geological / paleontological heritage of Europe. 2) Develop devices for the promotion of the European geological and paleontological heritage among the public. The project will validate the interactive management capabilities and functionalities that allow users the easy handling. The project will involve universities, research centres, companies, etc. with experience in digital and technological applications applied over the cultural and natural heritage. Also the project involve other governmental institutions such as the Geological and mining institute of Spain (IGME), Geoparks management bodies, etc, that will be linked to the demonstration phase. Two or three pilot areas will be selected. The province of Granada, through its Provincial County Council will be involved in this work of implementation and validation. To do this, we will work on spaces with a great geo ‐ paleontological heritage in the north of the province, particularly in Guadix and Baza area. A final phase will be addressed to the dissemination of results to the scientific community, the commercial development of the validated model and its promotion between the different sectors involved (eg. European Network of Geoparks, etc ...). To do this, a business plan and operation will develop. Granada es Provincia
