Lipid Management Beyond Statins: Biologic Basis, New Clinical Evidence, and Strategies Complimentary CME/CE Dinner Friday, June 12, 2015 6:30 pm – 7:00 pm 7:00 pm – 9:15 pm Registration and Dinner CME/CE Activity Palmer House Hilton State Ballroom, 4th Floor 17 East Monroe Street Chicago, IL 60603 This activity is jointly provided by Postgraduate Institute for Medicine This activity is jointly provided by the National Lipid Association. Medtelligence SM Supported by an educational grant from Amarin Pharma Inc. Program Overview Statins provide proven cardiovascular benefit in broad patient categories. Yet, even with guideline-mandated statin management, substantial residual risk remains for many dyslipidemic patients. Fibrates, nicotinic acids, OM3s, cholesterol absorption inhibitors? What is the biologic plausibility of each class for cardiovascular benefit? What is the clinical evidence? Are there agents of choice for particular forms of dyslipidemia? How much might severity of dyslipidemia or co-morbidities such as CAD, diabetes, or obesity factor into decision-making? This engaging educational activity will provide a rigorous review of these questions with an emphasis on offering expert practical commentary for clinicians who treat patients at high risk for CV events. Target Audience Physicians, NPs/PAs, pharmacists, RNs, Advance Practice Registered Nurses, and registered dietitians with an interest in lipid management and CV disease risk reduction Learning Objectives After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to: • Relate the key biologic pathways responsible for atherosclerotic disease and the mechanisms of therapies that inhibit its development • Discuss the current clinical trial evidence of therapies that have been used as add-on therapy to statins to reduce CV events • Incorporate risk assessment, guideline recommendations, and patient-centered approaches for add-on therapeutic decision-making for patients at high risk for CV events • For Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners only: – Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families Friday, June 12, 2015 Palmer House Hilton 6:30 pm – 7:00 pm 7:00 pm – 9:15 pm State Ballroom, 4th Floor 17 East Monroe Street, Chicago, IL 60603 Registration and Dinner CME/CE Activity Agenda 6:30 pm Registration and Dinner 7:00 Welcome and Opening Remarks Peter Libby, MD, Chair 7:10 Mechanistic Insights Into Treatments to Reduce Atherosclerosis Beyond Statins Peter Libby, MD 7:35 The Evidence for Add-on to Statin Therapy to Reduce CV Events Michael Miller, MD 8:00 Risk, Evidence, and Patient Preference in Guiding Add-on Therapy Harold Bays, MD 8:25 Panel Discussion and Q&A All Faculty 8:45 Cases for Discussion All Faculty 9:15 pm Adjourn Lipid Management Beyond Statins: Biologic Basis, New Clinical Evidence, and Strategies Faculty Peter Libby, MD, FACC, Chair Cardiovascular Medicine Brigham and Women’s Hospital Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine Harvard Medical School Boston, MA Harold E.
