President’s Message
Gord Kruger, Evergreen Club President
Spring is very much in the air these days, and a great looking summer can’t be too far behind!! Activities around the club
are back in high gear as the snowbirds have now returned to the nest and joined back in. It’s quite noticeable that the pace
has quickened and several very successful events have come and gone in the last couple of weeks....... first mention should
go to our wonderful Volunteer Coordinator Deanne for the great Volunteer Luncheon she put together. Everything was first
class. . (Continued on Page 2)

President’s Message (cont’d)
The lunch itself was excellent in quality and in quantity and I got a lot of positive
feedback on the menu choices. The caterers did an outstanding job. Deanne
had some great entertainment and great prizes as part of the luncheon. A
big “ Tip of the Hat” to Deanne for a job well done and a big Thank You from
me to her for inviting me to be a part of it.......The Drama Club production of
“Picnic In 1915” was well received and I’ve heard a lot of buzz about how good
it was......well done to everyone involved......it just goes to show what a great
talent base we have here at the Evergreen.......Some great events coming up
in May, starting off with our now very famous “Pancake Breakfast” on Saturday
May 2nd in the Conference Hall from 7:30am until 11am....best breakfast deal
in town at $5pp....pack up the grand-kids and join us for breakfast........then
it’s the “Mothers Day Concert” on Sunday May 10th with the Comox Valley
Concert Band presenting “On Board The Titanic”. The Titanic boasted of two
musical ensembles and a playlist of over 300 songs. This event will be held in
the Rotary Hall and begins at 2pm....for your convenience the doors will open
at 1:30pm. And finally it’s Country Music time again as Ken MacLeod and his
ensemble will present what they are calling “The Best Country Music Jamboree
Ever”........on Sunday May 31st at 2pm it all comes together in the Conference
Hall and Ken promises the best show to date.....tickets are $10 and it is, as always,
a fundraiser for the Sonshine Lunch Club....... As part of the City of Courtenay’s
Centennial Celebrations, the Evergreen Club will be hosting the “Something
Old, Something New, Something Borrowed Fashion Show on Saturday June 6th
at 6pm....stay tuned for further details.
I’d like to take a moment to recognize our latest “Volunteer of the Month”,
Sharlene Coulter. There was a great write-up on Sharlene in the April newsletter.
Please remember that we are always looking for those special volunteers who
go that extra step. If you’ve got someone in mind, speak with our coordinator
Deanne.......must go now but remember this...”Of all the things you wear, your
expression is the most important”..........Adios...gk

Friday Night Dances
The Club continues to thrive and we
learn a little more each time we meet.
We are continuing to look at the
DVDs that Joel Sartori, a well known
National Geographic photographer,
has made and we find that some of
what he suggests is actually rubbing
off. No light standards growing out of
a person’s head!. Our next project for
the Lounge Wall that will show in May
is Whimsical and this promises to be
a lot if fun. Maybe look for the multi
coloured cow. We had a photo shoot
to the Raptor Centre in Duncan. Quite
a long way to travel but really worth
the visit if you want to see the big
birds up close and personal. We are
also getting ready for our Wall project
in July which will feature the Moon.
This is a newsletter with a difference
since it is being sent from Singapore!
Remember, we meet every first and
third Tuesday in the Soroptimist
Lounge at 1.00 p.m. There is a
Lightroom workshop at noon.
Robin
Welcome to our usually beautiful May!
Trust everyone had a great Easter. I got
a lovely card with two of the weirdest
looking eggs. I won’t describe them
but I won’t have to worry about losing
any weight. We sang songs from
the 50’s taking us back to our school
days. They were all great and loved
by all. Our get togethers are simply
lots of fun and we were appreciated
by the staff at a wonderful luncheon.
We thank you for this. We meet Friday
mornings 10 – 11:30 am in the Rotary
Hall and everyone is welcome!
Donna
Well now things are looking good for
our Spring and Summer scheduled
Friday dances in the Rotary Hall.
Each week we will look forward to
seeing YOU DANCING to one of our
favorite bands.
Bar service is only available twice a
month and is noted with an * beside
the playing Band’s name. We have
really nice Bar Tenders keeping the
water jugs full and Soda Pop is good.
The Band starts up at 7:30 pm and
plays till 10:30 pm so come early and
visit with your friends for awhile.
Coffee and tea served at 9:00 pm
in the Lounge with a nice variety of
cookies, thanks to Bev’s shopping
skills and our volunteer coffee makers.
We want to thank the EVERGREEN
CLUB AND ORGANIZERS for the
Appreciation Luncheon for ALL THE
VOLUNTEERS - a good lunch, music
and time was had by all.
We like being a part of the Evergreen
Club - so - come on out and keep our
Friday Night Dancing DANCING!!!!!!
Evergreen Club members: $7.00 and
non-members welcome at $9.00

Heartstrings
The Heartstrings Music Book
Standardization Team, composed of
Dan McKenzie, Dale Webb, Jim Perry,
Tom Simpson and Rudy Preus, are
making progress. This is an ambitious
project and will take several months.
Hopefully, when completed, our
books will all closely resemble each
other, and each member will have
access to the standard versions of the
books on their individual computers.
The past few months Heart Strings
has been organized and led by Dick
Stuart, Jim Perry and Dan McKenzie
and the group is having fun and all of
them take turns at singing. If there is
anyone out there that plays a stringed
instrument and wants to have fun,
come on out Wednesday morning
10-12 and join us, you will be most
welcome. Irene
May 2015 Mexican Train
1pm in the Evergreen Lounge
on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of
each month
Mexican Train is a game played with
dominoes. The object of the game is
for a player to play all the dominoes
from his or her hand onto one or
more chains, or “trains” emanating
from a central hub or “station”.
Instruction is provided. There are
usually about 3 tables of play. If you
want to have some mid-week fun,
come and join us. 25 cent drop in fee.

Cycling
The weather is getting glorious and
we are all looking forward to the
sunny, warm days. There were 6 of
us out and we enjoyed the One Spot
Trail. Come and join us for a 2 – 2 ½
hour ride, with lunch at the Filberg
at the end, if you want. We meet at
the Filberg Centre on Monday and
Wednesday, leaving at 10:00 a.m.

Gospel Sing along
We are still singing every Thursday
morning from 10:30 till 11:30 in the
Conference Room. We sometimes
have a change in location and on
MAY 28TH we are singing in the
Lower Native Son’s Hall.
It is so nice to see our accordion
player back from her winter break.
Welcome Back all you snow birds.
The only qualification is an active
membership with the Evergreen
Club. Come on out and join us.

The 55+ BC Games are being held in North Vancouver this year and will run from
August 25-29th .
How big and what Economic Impact do the games have on the host community?
HUGE!!! The 2014 BC Senior Games in Langley hosted over 4000 participants
and created a total economic impact of more than 6.3 million $$$$ in the area.
Interest and participation in the 55+Games is escalating as more and more
Canadians are deciding to spend their retirement years in BC and enjoy an active
and healthy lifestyle. Provincial sports groups such as Triathlon and Soccer are
also expressing interest in participating in the 55+BC Games so there’s no doubt
more sports will be added.
A few questions to ask yourself:
Have you decided which sport you would like to enter? Do you know where your
sporting event will be held in North Vancouver?
Have you checked the Zone 2 website to find the Sport Coordinator who will
answer your questions and help you fill out the forms?
Do you know when your sport is having its play-downs? Have you thought about
and booked accommodations?
Registration deadline is June 18 so it’s time to start getting organized, familiarize
yourself with the website www.55plusbcgames.org and get registered. The
North Vancouver Accreditation Centre will now be held at
Chief Joe Mathias Centre
100 Capilano Road, North Vancouver.
This will also be the location for the Games Village, Banquet/Dance and Closing
Ceremony.
Now’s the time to take action both on paper and in your particular sport. You are
never too old to go for the Gold!!

There is definitely a blending of the
seasons this year. Bet hardly anyone
in this part of Canada noticed when
winter ended, and Spring began. Do
hope all these showers will bring our
May flowers.
Our Club meets once a month, and
start with a timely topic, or have a
round-table discussion. A member
gave a talk on the “Cloud” last
month, which was very informative
and interesting. At a round-table
discussion, difficulties or questions
we have are aired, and it is amazing
how much information one can glean
from these sessions.
We welcome everyone, novice or
experienced to try out our Club.
Our only requirement is a current
Evergreen Club membership and a
$1.00 drop-in fee.

We wish to remember, ISABEL PETCH,
who at one time was our President, and
such a good one. She was a pleasure
to be around, great sense of humour,
great personality, interested in many
things and a wonderful knowledge of
plant life and nature. She will be
remembered as a rare and special
bloom herself. Farewell Isabel.”

Here are the results of our league
as at Mar 31st. In second place are
the Clams with 36 points – Skip Pat
Chambers – third Melie Ursulom and
lead Brian Scarlett. In first place are
the Gophers with 39 points – skip
Barry Graham – third Pat Lamond
and lead Bertina Lefebgre. Good
bowling every one. We also held our
Ladies and men’s singles tournament.
First the ladies – the runner up was
Carolle Allen and the winner was Cath
Wiseman. For the men the runner up
was Bruce Donegen and the winner as
Barry Graham. Way to go everyone.
We then had the ladies winner play
off against the men’s winner – so it
was Cath Wiseman against Barry
Graham. This was for the Clubs singles
champion – and the winner was Barry
Graham. We are also holding the Club
Championship for the Doubles. This
pits the winner of the ladies doubles
against the winner of the men’s
doubles . So I will have the results of
this battle and also the final results of
our league for the next newsletter. We
are having our wind up luncheon and

2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each
month
For a club that only started in
February, Lifelong Learners has had
an exciting and fun run with varied,
interesting speakers from many walks
of life. Meeting fee is $1, and the
info is totally valuable. Before it ends
its Spring Season and starts again
in September, here are provocative
presenters for its last four meetings:
April 29 - Barrister Michael Holland
speaks on his expertise: family law,
estates, updating our wills, etc. A
sought-after community speaker,
Michael has been asked to touch on
the new law regarding euthanasia,
and more. We expect a lot of legal
questions that will be answered by
this lawyer, who has been serving the
community for several decades.
May 6 - Feng Shui for Every Body
by Terri Perrin, Author and Feng Shui
Consultant. She writes, “When you
make an effort to balance the energy
around you, the energy within you
comes into balance and that creates
better health...When you improve
your mood, you improve your health
and you are better equipped to deal
with life’s challenges.” Terri has many
blogs that show how we can use
Feng Shui to enhance our lives.

Spring is definitely in the air. Did
anyone see winter end? The riot of
spring blossoms is so wonderful to
see. Yet once again I say, we are so
fortunate to live in this area.
We are having so much fun strumming
and singing the wonderful selection of
music our leader, Terry, has provided
us with. All our songs are sent to us
via email ahead of time, so we can
study (or not). We view the songs on
a screen when we are playing, so we
are not adrift with paper.
We do have a loaner Uke, and anyone
who wishes to try it out for a couple
of sessions, and take home, may do
so, before making the decision to
purchase the instrument. The Uke is
not a challenging instrument. With 4
strings, and a bit of practice, one can
easily play many songs.
We start each session with simple
tunes and chords, followed in the last
half hour with more difficult chords.
Our only requirement is a current
Evergreen membership, and a dropin fee of $2.00.
For more information drop into one
of our sessions, or email Howie at
[email protected], or Terry at
[email protected].

Happy Gang
The Happy Gang is welcoming you.
Well, we are all enjoying “Spring”, or
is it summer? The birds are singing .
The flowers are blooming, and the
guitars are strumming. Come and sing

just listen. We are in the Conference
Hall at the Filberg Tuesday from 10
am to noon except for the odd time
that we meet with the Heartstrings on
Wednesday instead. Check with the
office.
We love to see the happy faces arrive.
If you play an instrument think about
joining us.The new fee is just a toonie
($2.00) a week.

iPad Tips and Tricks
2:30 - 4pm Soroptimist Lounge
1st Tuesday - Focus on New Users
3rd Tuesday-Focus on More
Experienced Users The iPad Club is a peer-led group
which is open to all iPad and iPhone
owners (all tablets are not iPads, if
yours doesn’t have an apple on the
back it’s not an iPad).
On the first Tuesday of the month we
focus on new users and encourage
those who need a bit of help with
the basics to come - we hope that
many of the more experienced users
will also come to help and share their
knowledge.
On the third Tuesday we switch to
slightly more ‘advanced’ techniques
but all are welcome. If ‘new’ users
attend (and you are most welcome)
please remember that we don’t review
basics at these meetings.
At many meetings we get enough of a
crowd to push the space limits in the
Soroptimist Lounge so we are moving
into the Dining Room at the Native
Sons Hall. However, the odd 1st or
3rd Tuesday has already been booked
by other groups so for awhile we’ll
be moving back and forth. I’ll send
out a notice prior to each meeting
to tell you where we’ll be. Hopefully,
by the Autumn session we’ll have a
permanent home in the Dining Room.
The group met there for our April 7th
meeting and we all enjoyed the extra
room - not to mention the cooler
temperature.

Are any of your ancestors WALLOONS
or speak WALLOON? Interesting
word isn’t it. I’ll tell you a little about it
at the end of the article.
Our May meeting will be held on
Thursday May 21st at 1 p.m. upstairs in
the Soroptomist Room. Members of
the Evergreen Seniors Club are invited
to join us. A number of us meet in the
Cafeteria for lunch so feel free to join
us around noon for a visit before the
meeting. There is no drop-in fee.
Walloon is one of many Romance
Languages which evolved from
spoken Latin. Walloons are a French
dialect speaking people who lived
in Southern Belgium, inhabiting
the provinces of Liege, Hainaut,
Luxembourg, Namur and southern
Brabaut. The are chiefly descended
from the Romanized Celts of Northern
Gaul - the so-called Belgae described
by Julius Caesar. The tribes of Belgium
were colonized by Rome for the first
three centuries of the first millennium.
During the religious wars of 16th &
17 centuries many members of the
Protestant Communities immigrated
to the Netherlands and America.
Also in 1620 Walloon miners and iron
workers settled in Sweden as they
were well known for their iron mining
and refinery work. The language is
still spoken but is fast dying out as very
few young people are learning it.

CLUB NEWS
Drama Club
Recorder
Meet & Greet Singles Club
The drama club spring play, “A
Picnic 1915” was a smash hit with the
audience. Everyone was saying how
wonderfully written directed, and
acted by our cast of characters The
cast and crew really enjoyed this show.
Mr Peabody was certainly tamed by
Mrs Maybella Lovealot amid the lillies
down by the river. The set was terific
and those responsible for making and
decorating the set were asked to help
another club with design and build.
We agreed immediately and hope to
help out in the near future.
The stories and tales mentioned were
well recieved. Most of which were
true with a little artistic license by the
writer. The drunken sailor was a hit with
everyone and a real pleasure for the
actor. What a great character and I am
sure he will never find that still now, it is
well hidden. Belle Piercy will be sitting
on her front porch for years basking
in the glory of a picnic well received
telling stories to her gandchildren and
visitors of her picnic with the mayor.
The music at the end ( assembled by
Ken MacLeod ) was very popular with
the crowd and many a toe tapped and
many a voice was heard singing along,
All in all a truely fabulous performance
by the drama club. If you would like
to join us with your ideas and talent
please feel free to give us a call at 250
897 1749 and have a chat or leave a
message. All will be welcome and all
will be heard.

The Singles Meet and Greet Activity
Group met on Wednesday, April 1,
2015. The guest speaker was Bruce
Longland, he spoke about real
estate, explaining about the best
ways of buying or selling new homes,
especially later in life, prior to going
into nursing homes.
Tony told some very funny jokes, and
we all enjoyed talking to old friends
and new acquaintances.
On April 21st we went to the Black Fin
Pub in Comox, for a very good lunch.
We are looking forward to seeing our
friends from Powell River, next month.
The meeting will be at the Native Sons
Hall, see you there.

VOLUNTEERS
VOLUNTEER
OF THE MONTH
Val Parmley
BRINGS BRIGHTNESS!
Val came here with her husband
Phil from Alberta 10 ½ years ago.
Their introduction to the Evergreen
Club by was by her cousin Bernice
Blonarwitz. “It all started as us being out of town guests attending the Friday
Night Dances,” says Val. Right from the start of joining the club, Val got into
the Choristers group. 5 years ago she was asked to assist then choir director
Gene Wennerberg after he fell ill. With a wry smile she adds, “It was only to
be temporary.” Val’s role as choir director is to organize singers for ‘Sing Outs’
at the various senior homes and help keep everyone in tune. No small feats
as there are over 80 members in the Choristers and they go to places all over
the valley to perform. “Valerie brings a brightness from the Choristers to all of
various senior residences she goes to,“ says Doris Wilkinson “as well as the
enjoyment she brings to everyone when we practice for choir Friday mornings
here at the Filberg!”
Val is involved in many Evergreen Club show’s including the variety shows and
the drama group’s plays. She helped start the Evergreen drama group and
volunteered her time as the secretary and treasurer. Now she acts and creates
all of the sets for the plays (that alone takes countless hours). You will also see
Val involved in the Gospel Sing Along group.
Val also shares her love of clowning with the CV Clown Club! You would
never know that Val was once an introverted person who preferred being
a homebody. “I was so shy. I couldn’t even go to a dance! I couldn’t even
dream of actually dancing.” Her mother passed away and she had a light bulb
moment. Val feels she could easily stay at home and just read, paint or sew for
‘days on end.’ But she knows that it is self defeating to restrict herself away like
that. In her own words, “Keep moving! If you stop, your mind goes off and
fades away. The Evergreen club is the main place we are active. We come here
for a lot of things and participate in the activities.” We thank you for your words
of wisdom and congrats on your 47th wedding anniversary!
A Message from
Deanne, your Volunteer
Coordinator
“What a vibrant place of activities
this Evergreen Club offers! Remember,
that it all comes from the volunteers!
A big shout out to Betty A and Phil P
And all the players involved in the
“Picnic in 1915.” Such an entertaining
way to celebrate our centennial!
Also, a big thank you to Lori R

This is a good place to meet new people and work as part of a dynamic team. One afternoon per month or more! 1:00pm
- 3:30pm you will be scheduled to serve customers, do kitchen duties and begin the shut down process. It would involve
staying past 3:30 in order to follow the full shut down procedures list. Food Safe is preferred but not mandatory - training
is provided! This is a nice time for an easy pace in the kitchen. The lunch time rush is over and you have a quieter ‘coffee
