FOOD CONCLAVE 2 0 1 5 INDIA: The Food Factory to the World 12 May 2015, Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi FOOD CONCLAVE 2 0 1 5 INDIA: The Food Factory to the World 12 May 2015, Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi The food processing industry is one of the largest industries in India. It is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth. The food Processing Industry offers a significant opportunity to elevate the agricultural economy, raising farmer incomes, generating employment and possesses enormous potential for creating export earnings. The contribution of the food processing industry to the gross domestic product at 2004-05 prices in 2012-13 amounts to INR 845.22 Billion. India's food processing industry has grown annually at 8.4% for the last 5 years, up to 2012-13. A developed food processing industry will reduce wastages, ensure value addition, generate additional employment opportunities as well as export earnings and thus lead to better socio-economic condition of millions of farm families – thus aligning fully with the Make in India campaign of the Government of India. The growth of food processing sector would need to be a significant component of this strategy. Availability of raw materials, changing lifestyles and appropriate fiscal policies along with liberalization and the growth of organized retail has given a considerable push to the industry's growth and has made the Indian market more attractive for global players. India has minimal share of branded food products as compared to other countries. Increasing the extent of branding in packaged and processed food and Positioning made in India brand abroad could drive the next wave of processing growth ensuring better quality for consumers and economic surplus for farmers and processors.
