Edward Campbell "Cam" Sheads was the Supervisor
who led the formal establishment of BVFRD in January 1948.
Ben Boyce was the First President of BVFRD.
Elmer Maley was the First BVFRD Fire Chief.
The First VOLUNTEER Firefighters included leaders Martin Caudle, Bradford
Robinson, Roy Carson, Jim Belcher, along with Golden Blincoe, James Robert
“Brownie” Brown, George Conklin, Mike Dix, Herman Fowler, Eric Hansen, Willie
Harlow, Fred Kielsgaard, Paul Kincheloe, Patrick McKenna, Owen Remington, Martin
"Tiny" Shanton, Bill Sheads, Jim Simpson and Joseph Staub, Senior.
The First CAREER Firefighters of BVFRD:
Marshall Curtis, Robert Dubé, Glenn Curtis,
Ted McKay, Thomas Hall, and Lloyd Cobb
Mae Maley Caudle established the Women's Auxiliary and was assisted by white and
black female residents of Burke, Virginia, particularly by Alberta Wright of
Little Zion Baptist Church.
Also dedicated to the Women and Minority
CAREER First Responders of Burke in 2015,
particularly Filipino American Patrick DeVera,
President, Asian American Firefighters Association
Plaque was donated by the Burke/West Springfield Senior Center Without Walls
(BWSSCWoW) on May 21, 2015 at David R. Pinn Community Center.
