From the Commodore
This is my favorite time of the year.
Temperatures are rising, the sun is setting
in front of the club, daylight savings time
has returned, flowers are blooming,
afternoon sailing is back, and soon a
comfortable evening sail will be in my
future. Earlier this evening I enjoyed a
few minutes with PC Paul Ring and he
shared with me he “used” to be from
Michigan. We laughed and then he
pulled up the weather forecast from
Michigan and the temperature was 2° F
for the next 4-5 days. He smiled and
said, “That's why I used to be from
Michigan.” While many people around
our country are looking forward to
enjoying Spring we are already feeling
the warmth and renewal it brings to us
each year.
Our Dogwood Regatta was held March
28 and 29. To all the racers, volunteers,
and spectators I offer my congratulations
and thanks for your participation and
comradery. Our club was founded to
support all types of boating including
racing, crusing and power boating.
Whatever your choice I hope you will
come and enjoy it as we celebrate Spring
and move into Summer.
We invite you to come enjoy our annual
Easter Celebration. Chef Rob and our
staff will offer a fabulous selection of delicacies to delight your plate followed by
our annual youth and of course adult
Easter egg hunt. Make your reservations
for lunch followed by the Easter Egg
Hunt at 2:00PM.
Highlighting our April events will be
the Mobile Big Band Society Dance on
April 11. Our Entertainment Chair,
Gwen Ledger has planned a wonderful
evening for your dancing and dining
pleasures. The band will be offering
wonderful music from the Glenn Miller

Junior Commodore’s Report
Forrest Pearson
Spring has arrived
and sailing is in full
swing. This past
February, FYC just
held the first ever
high school regatta,
Wet n’ Cool. There
were 43 sailors on
the water. Fleet racing was on Saturday
while team racing
was Sunday. On the water were fifteen
420s throughout the weekend, teams
from Ocean Springs, Fort Walton, and
Panama City joined in with the two
teams from Fairhope. There were also 2
Lasers and 5 Opti Green fleet with 4
Opti Red, White, and Blue. After the
racing was complete Fort Walton came
out on top, but Fairhope followed close
behind in second and Ocean Springs in
third. As some of you may know, we had
a “Grill your Own” after the regatta. It
was a huge success! On March 21,
Fairhope took 7 sailors to Ocean
Springs Yacht Club, where they held a
one day team racing event. Winds were
strong and currents caused for tough
starts. On the weekend of March 28 and
29, Fairhope High School will be traveling to Southern Yacht Club in New
Orleans to participate in Mallory Cup.
Thank you for all your support and
participation.

Meet our Staff! MEET MOLLIE LARISEY
By Sabe Fink
“I came to
work here soon
after the new
club opened,”
explains Mollie
Larisey. “I had
been at
Roussos, with
Pauline and
Skip and Teresa,
and when
Pauline called
and asked if I’d
like a job here, I jumped at the opportunity. I didn’t know anything about the
Fairhope Yacht Club, even though I had
grown up in Daphne, but when I saw the
beautiful setting – and the sunset – I
knew it was the place for me.”
Mollie says that the family atmosphere
among the staff, and the friendliness of
the members, combine to make FYC a
great place to work. “We have a good time
while we’re working,” she says, “and we
hang out together when we aren’t working. We take our kids on outings, go places
together, have fun together. And I love
serving the same people over and over – I
feel as if I get to know the members, and
care about them, and they care about me.
Even when it gets busy in the kitchen,
when I walk out that door with the meal I
have a smile on my face, and it’s genuine.”
Mollie is a single parent of eight-yearold Braeden, who is, in his own words, a
gamer. “Video games – and all the equipment they entail – are his passion. But he’s
also a runner, and did cross country this
year with the Daphne Middle School kids,
where my dad is a teacher. I’m very fortunate to have lots of family around, in
Spanish Fort and Daphne, and Braeden’s
dad is in Fairhope. I have a great support
system.”
After graduating from Daphne High
School, Mollie earned her AA at Faulkner,
and is now just a couple of courses shy of a
business degree. “I’m not at all sure what
direction that will take me, but it’s good
to be prepared for the future. Right now
I’m totally happy here at FYC.” When
asked if she has any aspirations in the
kitchen, Mollie laughed. “No way! The
members wouldn’t want me cooking! I
can cook, but I have no desire to do it as a
career.”If Mollie could order anything
from the club menu, it would almost
always be the tuna. “I love tuna, and sushi,
and so does Braeden. That, and the tomato-vodka shrimp.”
Next time you’re lucky enough to
have Mollie wait on you, let her know
how much you appreciate what she and
the rest of the staff do to make our club so
special.

FYC Auxiliary News
n March during the
Arts & Crafts Fair
Cybele’s was kind
enough to allow us
to use the area just
outside of their
store to set up a
table to sell the B.
Sumerall prints.
We had three lovely
days of sunshine. A
big thank you to all
twelve of our volunteers that helped man the table during that time.
Our April meeting date has been changed from Good Friday (April
3) to the second Friday, April 10. Jennifer Fidler from the Fairhope
Public Works Department will be our speaker for the meeting. Bring
your questions about our city and receive answers. It will be very
interesting. Don’t miss it.
April 15th will be our Spring Fashion Show “Girls, Shoes and
Wine” in the FYC main dining room. The show is open to everyone
and the cost to attend is $25 per ticket. There will be lunch, door
prizes and a silent auction.
Invite your family and friends
to join you. The men are welcome. They might even find a
lovely Mother’s Day gift at the
show!
The Dauphin Island
Skippers Meeting will find us
helping with registration and
selling of the food and drinks.
See you there!
Our May 1st meeting will
provide a delightful program.
“Bloodhound Becky” will tell
us her tale of suspicion, detec-
tion and capture! Come
and enjoy our
last meeting
until
September. We
will continue to get together
during the summer to visit
other yacht clubs for lunch.
Watch your e-mail for the date
and time and meeting place.
On May 6th the Auxiliary is hosting a very special program. Christel McCanless will be giving us a totally
absorbing power point presentation of her life story.
She will take us through her early days in Germany,
WWII, escaping from Germany and her life since arriving in Huntsville. Christel and her husband, George,
have been members of FYC for several years. This program is open to everyone and extremely interesting. It
will be given from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Ballroom
before the FYC General Meeting on Wednesday, May 6.
Safety Always Comes First!
Past Commodore Gary Moore got a surprise that we all hope
won’t happen very often. There is not a completed report on
Gary’s boat; Safety Chair David Barr is waiting on FFD for
the final word but tell me I may say, “Please don’t leave gallons of flammables & combustibles or even rags containing
same on any boat. Someone commented that ‘we all do it’.
Hell no, we don’t and those that do need to STOP please!”
The hero was 12 year young Miss Mary Francis Bailey. who
gave the first alarm and Zane Yoder who extinguished the
blze.
Far Star Home Aer 'Round e World Voyage
FYC circumnavigator Kennedy McLeod
brought his 39-foot Southern Cross sailing
yacht Far Star back to Fly Creek on ursday,
March 12, aer nearly a five and a half year
absence. During that time, Far Star, a 39-foot
Southern Cross cruiser, voyaged around the
world with Kennedy at
the helm.
Far Star had completed
its circumnavigation at
Trinidad in 2014 and this
final leg of the voyage
returned the yacht to its
home berth at FYC. Far
Star's arrival was delayed
by thick fog, but the weather did not dampen
spirits as sailors gathered to assist Kennedy
docking.
Greeting Far Star and Kennedy were Past
Commodore Paul Ring and Louis Zadnichek
who had attended the sailing party years ago
that sent Far Star on her voyage. Also there to
greet Far Star with champagne was Gwen
Ledger, FYC entertainment committee chair.
Kennedy is the first FYC member to sail
around the world from Fly Creek and return.
Now that Far Star is safely in its berth,
Kennedy will be pleased to share his stories
and experiences with Club members and their
guests.
Club Sailing-The Hemlstadter Report
3/8/15 It looked like the rain was going
to hold off until after our race, and since
the winds were predicted to be out of the
East (South-East) I wasn't surprised to see
the wind blowing out of the West. Our
Clairvoyant Race Callers set the course as
X-SW-NE-X-S and sure enough the wind
was soon out of the Southwest. The
winds gradually increased during the race
and probably reached 15 to 18 knots
before the day was over. Damn Yankee
crossed the Finish Line 1st with Patriot a
couple of minutes behind. Good job
Rick. These 2 boats have already shown
they are the boats to beat as they each
have 17 points in the Series. Ogopogo was
3rd another minute behind. It was very
scary to see someone fall off a boat into
the cold water at the 1st mark. Good to
keep your Life Jackets on as you never
know. Thanks to a quick rescue all
returned home and are OK.
3/15/15 FUN FUN FUN. Yes it was a
FUN day and a FUN race. Conditions
were great-Sunny, Mid 70s and a light
wind (5 to 7 knots) to start, building to
around 10 knots the last 2 legs. Eight
boats came to race, plus I saw Skedadle
lurking around checking things out. The
course was set at X-SW-NW-NE-X.
There was definitely some excitement
going on as I heard several "Starboard"
hails and even know of one foul and a
720° penalty. Then there was that VX-1
darting back and forth who won the race.
Way to go Billy. Ogopogo just nosed out
Damn Yankee for 2nd place. (21 second
difference.) Also a very close finish
between Patriot, the J-22, and Arcturus.
It should be noted that we track
times/points/etc. by boat rather than by
Skipper, so Don you'll need to share the
points with Tracey on the J22.
3/22/15 It didn't look like it would be a
very good day to sail, but a quick glance
at a weather report about 12:30 indicated
that the rain had moved away and the
winds looked pretty good. 8 boats must
have been watching the same thing as
they showed up to have a good race. The
HAVE YOU SEEN THE CLUB'S RHODES 19 LATELY?
You may not recognize it. It has been cleaned inside and out, new floor
boards installed, electric motor repaired, backstay repaired, cover
cleaned, sails cleaned and more to come. All due to the efforts of
RICK BYRNE. Thank you so much. It is now very ready to sail and
available for sailing for all Club Members that are Certified.
HAVE FUN SAILING
course was set X-S-N-X-E and the race
started with wind about 10 to 12 knots.
It wasn't long before the 15 to 18 knot
winds kicked in, and I really started missing my crew. They are really valuable.
It was a pretty fast race with Skedadle
edging out the VX-1 by 16 seconds with
Ogopogo in 3rd place a little over a minute
later. We are almost to the 1/2 point of
the Spring Series and the leaders are:
Damn Yankee and Patriot with 21 points,
Ogopogo with 15 points and the VX-1
with 14 points.emlstadter
